Big Sky: Ramcharger 8

- This Doppelmayr 8 passenger bubble chairlift is the 3rd lift to travel the very important route from the Mountain Village to the top of Andesite Mountain. Installed in 2018, it replaced the Ramcharger Express, Big Sky's first high speed quad which was installed in 1991.
There are many firsts with this lift. It is the first 8 passenger chairlift in North America, first Doppelmayr D-Line system in North America, and the first use of locking safety bars in North America. Other notable features are a direct drive to ensure the highest reliability, heated seats to ensure passenger comfort, and a loading conveyor to facilitate easier loading and reduce slow downs. It is the undisputed most technologically advanced lift in North America if not the world!!
As for the statistics, the lift is 4461 feet long with a vertical rise of 1160 feet. Capacity is currently 3200/hr but it can be increased to 3600 by adding chairs. The lift was to be overbuilt for current demand as the Big Sky 2025 plan is supposed to significantly increase skier visits when complete. The one statistic not particularly exceptional is the speed which is the standard 1000 feet per minute. It seems to run at or close to that speed yet feels slower because of how smooth the ride is. The operating schedule for this lift is extensive with it being used for first tracks and evening access to the Everett's 8800 restaurant. When night skiing is added it will run even more hours.
While this is the first D-Line for Big Sky, it for sure won't be the last with Swift Current and Southern Comfort scheduled for upgrades as part of the 2025 plan. While they may not be 8 packs, I'm sure they will feature the same modern features. I also hope to see Boyne and other ski companies bring this impressive display of lift technology to more North American resorts.
Seats looks extremely comfortable and perfect for a summer round trip
It sounds super super quiet around the terminals
Why not
Just beat me to it haha, I'll be in Big Sky next week! Great video, what a beautiful and sharp looking lift to set the standard for the next generation of modern detachables in the U.S.
That is Exactly What Mr Stephen Kertcher Is Doing With Big Sky Resort. By 2025 Most Of The Lifts At Big Sky Resort Will Be Brand New D Line Technology.
1:52 Tower 6 is so tall because Big Sky wanted to not have a lift tower in the middle of Ambush, as was the case on the original quad (which had two combi towers at this point).
It’s nice that Ambush is now completely free of obstacles in the way because of that.
This lift replaced a Doppelmayr high speed quad, which was moved to Lone Peak where it replaced the Shedhorn double chairlift, and its UNI terminals received new UNI-G skins. Incidentally, the Shedhorn double was the original lift on the Ramcharger alignment before the quad.
Can't believe I forgot to include that in the description. I recorded Shedhorn 4 and it will be uploaded soon.
It’s Funny How Big The Chairs Are And You’re The Only One Riding In It
Chairs weigh the same going up as coming down so it is not a "power/cost" issue but it is a bigger load on lift components
Seats are fantastic on that lift
One thing I like about this style of lift is that you don’t need to take your skis off while you’re enclosed. Even though some lifts serve better trails than this, it’ll be nice to see what Boyne is going to do to Big Sky after Swift Current 6. Ramcharger is definitely not alone.
Funny how the Eastern States don’t have this amazing new technology marvel of a lift. You can’t beat it.😲👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏼
Ramcharger is certainly not an outlier. At least Loon Mountain’s getting an 8-pack next summer, so the East won’t be alone. Plus there are other D-Line 8 packs in Europe with this same technology. I’ma be honest, I do like this lift, and I had a good experience on it, but there are other awesome lifts out there besides this. Stats and gimmicks don’t always mean everything. Just because it is advanced in technology doesn’t mean it’s the best.

Does not run very fast. Just goes to show how the capacity could have been achieved with a 6.
This lift is 100% about making a statement. From a skiing only perspective, there was no reason to replace the quad. Not that I’m complaining, the lift is great, it’s just unnecessary.
It can run faster but they don’t cause there is almost no one in the lift itself
Big sky’s lift fleet as a whole is just super disorganized. They’ve got like 5 really nice lifts, but the rest are like 30 years or older. That’s why I like vail and breck because they have almost all detachable fleets (even if the lifts are just normal high speed quads).
It is fast. Goes 5m/s. That’s the legal limit speed for any chairlift
@@andrewmyers3530 There are enough chairlifts that go fastest than 5 m/s. ua-cam.com/video/7WiGH3nKuz0/v-deo.html
does this lift operate in summer for scenic views?
Yes, for scenic rides, mountain biking, and access to the Everett's restaurant at the top.
are they going to run this lift in the summer?
Yes, they also ran the old one in the summer.
Yes Ramcharger 8 Is the first ever to have it’s own 5 Pack Mtn Bike Carrier System. These New Carriers aren’t just the seats taken off like just about all the other resorts do during the summer time. They are additional two they’re 65 heated winter chairs did they use in the winter time.
