The Matthew Boyd signing is a perfect encapsulation of Jed "Smartest Man In The Room" Hoyer. Boyd is 34 years old and in the past four seasons he's made a total of 38 starts and pitched a total of about 190 innings. Why spend $14M on a pitcher like that when you could get Max Fried for about $11M more?

I love Turner! Plays mostly first now, and DH. Still plays some 3rd but not a lot. Had 28 HR's in 23, but fell off with Toronto and Seattle last season. I think Wrigley could bring the beast out again. My concern is whether or not he could accept a bench role. I wish we could grab him, if for nothing else, his veteran presence

If there’s a plan in place, it’s clearly a secret. Most of us have been focused on the Cubs adding a starter and then a good back end reliever. Then we talk about potential trades but when we look at the bench as you just did, it’s concerning. Hoyer is most likely waiting for the market to drop then he will pick up some cheap marginal talent to fill the bench.
I think Canerio will be traded for SP depth as a throw in. Workman will start against righties he’s gone to be just a lefty but that raw power could profile well since he had 31 homers last season
I like the looks of Gage. But what he did was at AA. I hope if he makes the 26 man, his power, which BTW, just surfaced last season, transfers to MLB. Big jump to make

The Cubs have no real depth. True. Bellinger was your 4th outfielder and the starting 1B. Suzuki was a 5th OF. Busch could have been moved to 3rd base. We are talking logic here. Jed saying "we see Busch as a first baseman" is nice and all. Last year he "saw" Morel at 3b. How did that work out? Clearly if there was no concern for defense at 3b last year, why is there concern this year? If the team was owned by the Mets owner and the team had a GM who knew how to construct a lineup with depth and versatility, Belli would be on the team. I'd rather have Shaw and or Busch fighting for ABs and playing time vs being where the team is. As you correctly put it. The Cubs have no depth. If Busch is hurt who plays 1b? If Nico is hurt who moves to 2nd base if Shaw is at 3b? If Danby is hurt, and who cares what the chart shows, your next best SS is Nico, so you slide your best player to SS and find a 2b. If Shaw is at 3rd, you slide him to 2nd and if so, who goes to 3B? Bottom line, the depth is AAA dudes because Cody was not valued. Now before the season starts, the Cubs fans see what you see. There can be ZERO people getting hurt. And Shaw has to hit. But you are totally spot on. If Nico and Shaw are hurt in April, then Miles is your guy? Ugh.
Too many outfielders, not enough infielders. We still need another starter. 2 decent relievers, and a player that can play multiple positions on the infield.
If Busch gets hurt, it may not be ideal, Kyle Tucker has a very small amount of experience at 1B. Move KT to first and play Caissie/Suzuki in RF. Just have Tucker play 1B in spring training 4 or 5 times, it's good to have at least a do-able fall back option.
No need to move Tucker to first. They already have Amaya who can play there, Ian Happ can play there. Ballesteros is likely to be moved there. most think he is like schwarber and won't stick behind the plate. Workman can play first.

Just about every team team is in a situation like this. Teams only have 13 position spots typically on the 26 man. Of the 5 bench spots, one is a DH/OF, one C, OF, and then 2 IF. It's great if you have 4 guys who can play 5 different positions competently but those guys don't come along very much. I'm still thinking they make a big trade to bring in a TOR starter and hopefully a closer with it and then sign Bregman or Kim for 3B and run with Shaw at 2B.
Ask the Dodgers about their depth. Ask them about how they lost all their pitching arms essentially and still won a trophy. Their bench/depth costs more than other teams starters. We are fans of a cheap ridiculous out of touch unrealistic front office baseball org. I’m just glad I have a secondary team I follow closely as a kid like the NYY because I live vicariously through them.
@@gregthegroove Which is why I said "just about." And for all that spending, the Dodgers have 1 more title in the past 25 years than the Cubs have. Their manager would have been fired if they didn't win all last year even with all the injuries because they have such high expectations. I will admit I want the Cubs to spend like the CBT is just an annoyance same as the Dodgers, but most people forget the Dodgers spent the better part of 15 years building a base that turned them into the place where FA will take less for the chance to win. The Cubs would have to continue on their path for another decade for that. And I'll keep saying, fans only complain about a lack of spending when it's really a lack of winning they are upset about.
If *just about" every team is in a similar position, why are there 5 teams in the NL clearly better than the Cubs? Also, the Cubs bring in more revenue than "just about" every team. Saying "yeah, but other teams have their problems too" is weak sauce.
@@d.j.8059 No, it's accepting reality and that throwing money at the problem isn't the solution. Want proof? How well did it work for the Mets? Yes, they made the NLCS last year, and it wasn't because of any big contract they signed. And 5 teams better? I'll grant the Dodgers, Braves, and Phillies. Now make the argument for whichever you say are the other 2. The Cubs have players who were top 10 in WRC+ at 1B, 2B, LF, RF, and DH. They are expected to get right at league average production at the other 4 spots. They have holes that need addressing. I'd be calling the Twins and Red Sox and offering a package of Nico, Horton, Alcantara, Wick and Birdsell for Lopez and Duran. Nico would go to Boston, who would send 2 prospects (Arias and Sandlin) to Minny. Everybody wins. Cubs then sign Bregman for 3B (adding a top 10 WRC+ for the one lost in Nico) and roll with Shaw at 2B, who should have a better chance at being above average at 2B versus 3B. Cubs might still only be the 4th best team in the NL, but it's about getting to the dance and then seeing where the music takes you.

@michaelplowman8674 Dodgers, Padres, Mets, Braves and Phillies are all better than the Cubs right now.
I love how "yes, the Mets made the NLCS, but..." is part of your argument. Weak. Sauce.
I don't think it's an 80 win team. Regression coming for Imanaga. Questions up the middle. RP still a joke
@@jasonvalencia8565 you aren’t wrong. You are going to see Tucker, Steele and Suzuki traded at the deadline. This team will be starting another rebuild
Respectfully disagree. It would take a LOT of injuries for this not to be an 80 win team. But that’s not the goal. Gotta get to 90+
Dont worry guys, wrigley will still be filled and the beer will flow like a river.
Aspen… where the beer flows like wine
