  • 5 WOOD or HYBRID - WHICH IS BEST FOR A MID HANDICAPPER?
    Should You Use a Hybrid? Or a 5-Wood? which golf club should you use? which golf clubs should you buy? should you use a hybrid? should you use a 5-wood? which golf clubs should mid handicap golfers use? what about high handicap golfers? and which are the best clubs for beginners? in this video I put a hybrid against a 5-wood to see exactly what the difference is? I use a SRIXON 5 wood and Hybrid in todays test, but the big question is which should i use?

    Thanks so much Lee! Agree with much more versatility with hybrid. Not sure I’d putt with it though as mentioned below.
    Within the make you choose, perhaps adjustable hosel would be the clincher. Some brands offer this in fairways but not hybrids.

    Good test! I haven't had a five wood for many years. Maybe it's time to test again. My hybrid is a monster so might need something to hit higher.

    Great video! I'm personally gaming a zx5 4 iron instead of a hybrid but that's only because I prefer long irons over a hybrid and I've played with a hybrid a lot too. Instead of a 5wood I changed the loft of my 3 wood to 16,5 so more of a 4 wood to get it in the air of the deck a little easier. So many posibilities for sure!

    I want a "hybrid theory" - great album: who you managed to drop that into a golf video :-)
    Must be great having so many clubs at your disposal!
    For me, this year, I am trying not to change anything and want my improvement (or worsening) to be down to me and me alone. I got a new set of clubs last year, with extra addition at the end of the year, and although all the driver videos are making me consider getting a fitting for a new one and I am going to stick with what I have.
    In my bag, I have a 3 fairway wood, a 3 & 4 hybrid wood, and a 2/3 hybrid iron - hybrids are so much easier to hit than normal words for me and they are not seen as an old person club as they were when I last played. (Even if they were, who cares).

    Very useful video as always Lee. I game a 22deg 4 hybrid which I love out of dodgy lies. Also have 3 wood which I love off the tee if driver is not behaving. Trouble is cant hit 3 wood off the deck, so maybe 4/5 wood should be considered instead? Food for thought definitely. Loving the look of the Srixon zx range too - must give them a test. Keep up the good work 👍

    A good little comparison. In theory the 5 wood should be far more forgiving but it's like the argument between forged players irons and GI or SGI clubs. If the forged players iron suits your eye and you're confident with it, you'll probably play better with it. I'd be curious to see the same or similar test off of the tee. I would be more likely to use a club off the tee that flew 235 given that there are only 4 par 5s on most courses & you might use this club off the deck once or twice a round but it could also be useful on shorter, tighter holes off the tee or laying up before an obstruction.

    I have always struggled with hitting Fairway Woods but hit hybrids much better, so I game a 19deg hybrid instead of a 5 Wood.
    When this damn lockdown is over I am hoping to try the PING G425 Fairway Woods to see if I can bridge the current gap in my Bag between my Driver and hybrid. Whether it's a 3Wood with the loft sleeve turned up, or a 5Wood turned down will hopefully reveal itself during the Fitting👍

    Good sound decision, in my opinion. If you test it on the course, my guess is you will choose the hybrid just because a 5W is definitely more difficult from the rough or semi rough. Maybe think about adjusting your 3W to 16 degrees and shortening the shaft by 0.75 inches.

    Nice review Lee. I carry the Ping G 425 # 5 Wood and multiple G 425 hybrids in the bag Lee. I like options. :) Hybrids are easier for me to hit and I like the fact that they can hit from multiple lies. That being said I do find that I hit the Ping G 425 #5 Wood pretty well off the tee and deck. I think its a better option then carrying a 3 wood which is much harder to hit. I do have a Ping G 425 # 2 hybrid on the way from Ping. Might be a good option to have.

    I found that at a slower swing speed the 5 wood gives more consistency than 3 hybrid because the 3 hybrid is harder to launch. 3 Hybrid often went same distance as 4 hybrid, whereas gapping is more consistent with 5 wood. For comparison my driver speed is low 90s

  • @robertcourt8593
    @robertcourt8593 3 роки тому +2

    In my limited experience, at lower speeds, it's more noticeable how much you gain through a fairway wood. Launch, peak height and descent were far better for me and similarly, hybrids were noticeably better than mid irons.

  • @andym5900
    @andym5900 3 роки тому

    Lee. 5 wood in my bag as distance between 3&5 hybrids is minimal because of speed & height

  • @anthonycollins9758

  • @jbuburuz
    @jbuburuz 3 роки тому

    Thank you very interesting. I am confused about your handicap. I saw you hitting drivers at +108mph and you can hit these 19 hybrids. I may be mistaken but I recall you saying about handicap 10 on Dan's channel? And you were looking for scratch. You seem to have the speed and good swing for a lower handicap or even close to scratch?

    • @LWG
      @LWG  3 роки тому

      I was trying to reign in the driver speed. My normal is 115-120mph. I went up to 12.5 with the WHS.

  • @kymstock1852
    @kymstock1852 2 роки тому

    Mid- handicap players come with variation in swing speed, which can make choice of clubs different for higher and lower swing speeds. Most of us don't hit a low lofted 3 wood off the deck very well, making a 5 wood a better choice. The gap between Driver and 5 wood distance for lower swing speed player can become too large. In that case a 4 wood ( high lofted 3 wood/ 16-13 degree) makes more sense for a back up off the tee club and a 7 wood for off the deck shots. Then it is a matter of working out where to stop using irons (carry distances bunch up/ get too close) and replace them with hybrids or hybrid-irons.

    My answer was 100% hybrid... until I got my new Mizuno stz 3 and 5 wood. Now I am in love with the height and distance they give me.
    Only thing that a hybrid was was the versatility from the rough or a really scabby lie. Still don’t feel like I would use a FW from a really crap lie or a big down slope etc. Where as a hybrid you could go any time.

  • @golfingmadeeasy
    @golfingmadeeasy 3 роки тому

    The one with the longer shaft should go farther - if the lofts are the same. I had a 7 wood and 4 hybrid with the same loft but different length shafts. The 7 wood, which had the longer shaft by 1", was about 10 yards longer.

    Interesting vid Lee. I'd guess if you had the 70-80g shaft in the 5 wood the results would be even closer. Hybrid all the way on this result though, 4 wood as a middle club sounds ideal at at 16/16.5. Could probably turn the hybrid up a degree then as well. When are you planning on having your bag set? With all your new options it's going to be a tough choice and tough to stabalise. Always too many toys to try..... :-)

    The 2021 bag could potentially have two hybrids (either of 19; 22&26*) a 7 wood (20.5*) and a 5 wood (16.5*)......been gaming 5w; 19 & 22/23* hybrid for the best past of 10 years. I also think you have to ask yourself the question, how often are you really going to be hitting / pitching onto the green from 235 out on course.....

    • @kymstock1852
      @kymstock1852 2 роки тому

      Agreed. A 16.5/ 17 4Wood and a 7 Wood 20/21 are more functional than a 3W/5W combo for most of us. I am using a 19 Hybrid Single length as a 3 iron style shot ( low flat trajectory escape shot and chipping near the green) and really don't get a reliable carry with it, mainly because I use it out of very poor lies. I just want to advance the ball down the fairway with it. Other than that I have a Cobra F7 22 hybrid that carries about 10-12 M shorter than the 7W, and a 27 degree TS2 ( set at 29) that I can cover the 130-145m distance , then my 7 iron-wedges.

    In a nutshell, fairway woods off the fairway & hybrids out of the rough.
    To my simple logic, it’s all in the names - I mean FAIRWAY woods is a self-explanatory name and weren’t hybrids originally called rescue clubs (i.e. to get out of trouble) ?
    I don’t worry to much about similar lofts if the respective clubs are used for these differing purposes.
