    I used to do a slightly higher ABV when I started making mead back in the early 90's. I used 3 lb per gallon and it was decidedly sweet, but that was what they call a sack mead and supposed to be sweet. These days, what with honey being as expensive as it is, I've learned the value of dialing back on the honey and even doing some melomels. Good work, boys.

    Agree on the aging, although mead seems to be the product that is best served by it, as pure sugar fermentation is quite rough when fresh.

    Your rant about aging being a scam made me smile :) It has its uses, but the truth is, good brewing practices can drastically cut down on those supposed requirements to age mead for "at least a year" and other amateur nonsense you see tossed around homebrew forums. Twoje zdrowie!

    Aging mead, is about the meld of flavours. it also rounds off the alcohol. unlike whisky etc, it is a wine not a spirit, thus it does need to age that little bit, 6 months bulk min. because of mead sugars are not maltose, a wine yeast except champagne yeasts are better.

    So when you bottled this, it had a FG of 1.014. Do you do anything when you bottle it to kill the yeast, or stop fermentation? How do you prevent it from continuing fermentation to become more dry, or even from potentially creating bottle bombs?

    • @theastronomer5800
      @theastronomer5800 3 роки тому

      1.014 may not be a problem if it's not changing. You need to check the FG over a period of time, say 1-2 weeks, and if it's not changing then that's (most likely) as low as it will go and you're safe to bottle. Otherwise you can add a couple things to kill the yeast, wait 24h and then bottle.

    My mead is in day 3 of primary fermentation, should I swerl it around once a day? And should I remove the airlock when I do it?

    • @theastronomer5800
      @theastronomer5800 3 роки тому

      Hi. Hope you figured it out by now, but, it's best to swirl a few times during the first week, because that's when most of the fermentation happens so you want to get rid of the gasses to help the yeast. I swirl ~24h after, and then 2-3 times over the next week. Some people swirl twice a day for the first week, some never! No need to remove airlock. After a few weeks you don't watch to touch it so it can start to clear. Cheers!

    Where's the Beowulf Viking scene with the warriors and the hot chicks in the mead hall defying the monstrous Grendel dude?! Mead is bad ass warriors brew meant for the worthy warrior and those who salute him, men who slay berserkers, demons and DRAGONS with swords and SPEARS!!! then party with kings, their courts and many, many beautiful maidens, come on man, WTF? You hit all the prep points to making a great mead in your vid, but completely missed the purpose of MEAD ITSELF, the elixir of the GODS! You have to revisit this video and set the scene strait dude, the infallible history of Warriors triumphs, Kings ransoms that were paid for courageous valor rendered to save all, the gratitude of all! and the Lovely maidens part played with their drink of choice, the drink of the Gods... (MEAD). For history's sake, make it again along with some history, and a good show...this sir could be a classic.
