In this tutorial, we cover some different methods for selecting and moving multiple clips around on the main storyline and on connected layers. This is a great tutorial if you are beginning to work with layers and need to control, move and edit groups of clips or layered clips and is especially useful for repeated items like titles or graphics that often appear in different parts of your edit.

Thank you for sharing your know how. You just saved me a ton of work by using the tilde key.
Thanks Ben. I learn something new from you every video. Didn’t know about the Shift+Del trick or nudging!
You are welcome! I'm glad you are finding the tutorials useful! Love the Beatles and your the channel looks amazing!
great vid as always. I had about 20 short clips randomly stacked upon each other (and not necessarily w/ the beginnings/ends of each clip matching), I selected them all, dragged them to the magnetic timeline and BOOM! fcpx put them in order one after the next. was amazing (i was thinking I'd have to use cmd+option and down arrow. . .which works for one clip but then when you do it for another clip that's above the one you just put in the timeline, it bumps that clip down and inserts itself into the timeline)
Sounds like the editing is going well! Glad I could help.
CMD + G! BLESS YOUR HEART!!! Been looking for this for awhile. Thanks so much Ben! Subbed up too!
I agree. Without that knowledge, the program is totally useless.
It is amazing how simple function of the double arrow tool in FCP7, nobody explaining its analogue in the FCPX. This is a very useful function, especially if the timeline is long and there is no way to simple select all the clips without the manipulation with Shift+Z.
Thank you, great and very helpful tutorial!
tell me, please, I can't find info anywhere..
control+P - play head replacemen. is it possible somehow to move the pieces of the video like this? For example, if I have 10 images on a timeline in random places, and I want them all to start in a certain place. So that you don't have to manually move each one
I have a project done in 1080x1080 which include transform and other automations. I Now want to use it again and change the screen ratio, now my project is in the center of a 1080x1920 ratio.
How can I select all of it and move it to the top?
I could of course use the “shared” version of the 1080x1080 but then I loose control of automations and it’s not editable anymore.
Do you know how?
Thank you Ben for your Awesome tutotial^^!
My pleasure!
Thanks, using ~ saved my ass while in a hurry! Much appreciated!
Love your tutorials. Thanks so much!
You are so welcome!
Keywords shortcuts are your best friend in Final cut pro x . Thanks
They are indeed!
6:46 range tool + shift + delete did not function differently for me than pressing simply delete--both left a gap between the clips, just FYI. GREAT video btw, learned a lot of helpful tips! thx Ben
Good to know! I will take a look at that.
great tutorial, thanks for sharing... sometimes it happens to me that multiple clips are grouped in a unique storyline and I want to ungroup them but don't know how to. There's a command to do this?
paolo serra Select the compound clip and break apart clips items. Clip > Break Apart Clip Items or Shift-Command-G.
@@kungpowgeek oh man.. thank you so much! You cannot image how hard I prayed for figure out this
Yes that is definitely a good one! I'm going to add it to the description.
@@pao_serra You're welcome. 🙂
how are you explaining eveything but the thing im actually lookingfor an answer for. how do i move a clip thats above the storyline back into the story line i cant seem to move it down without the storyline moving
If you select the position tool you can do that. It will overwrite the clips already on the main storyline. I also show some shortcuts for how to do this here - ua-cam.com/video/0hF6_1cGixg/v-deo.html
My timeline ends before the end of my clips! How can I move the end mark forward? If I export my video will be shortened!
Did you manage to get this sorted? I replied to another of your comments.
Many thanks Ben. How to add transitions between connected clips if there is not enough extra media beyond clip edges and without compromising the clips details?
Take a look at this new tutorial I made on creating transitions - ua-cam.com/video/9AUcEeixaZQ/v-deo.html - it has some ideas and plugins that can be used to fix these issues.
Hey, @ben I am trying to find a way to land a layered clip midframe on the storyline clip... for some reason, I cannot find a way to drop them mid-frame even when zooming in.
What do you mean by mid frame?
How do you log clips that have more than one camera and a audio recorded from an external source?
Do you mean synchronisation of multiple video shots and audio?
My Synchronized clips tend to stick together. Sometimes I want the top clip to be in the main timeline but when I try to move it the bottom clip leaves altogether.
Cori Jacobs can you make a screen capture explaining the problem?
how to drag only video not audio to time line from above the events is there shortcuts key or technique
Thanks for the question.
SHIFT + 2 will toggle on video only drag and drop editing. SHIFT + 1 will switch it back to normal and SHIFT + 3 will allow audio only drag and drop editing.
I made a quick tutorial covering this - "Drag Only Video to Your Timeline - Shortcuts & Tips for Final Cut Pro X"
ua-cam.com/video/lNreClpB8Dc/v-deo.html
Every time I try to export/share/send to compressor it doesn’t move beyond 0%
Any advice would be hugely appreciated
Have you taken a look at this video - ua-cam.com/video/EajGOw55AGI/v-deo.html - also look at the link in the description for a page on my web-site where I share and collect new tips.
I have multiple layers of videos on the timeline which are already edited the way it should be. Is there a way move all the clips into one single layer without copying over the un-use videos or disabled videos on the timeline? Or do I have export the project as a master video file and the imported back to the project..I’m lost..help..
I'm pretty sure that there isn't a quick way to do this. You'd also need to watch out for the snapping timeline to make sure things don't snap out of synch when you make the change.
How can I trim overlapping clips at the same time.
Here, the program allows you to select and extend only one by one.
I want to do it all at the same time. does this have a shortcut?
thanks
Hey Safa... I put this tutorial together - ua-cam.com/video/dB2evfDMv9s/v-deo.html - this shows how to extend multiple layered clips to your playhead. Let me know if that is what you were looking for.
how to move audio files in different tracks?
There are no tracks in Final Cut Pro X but you can assign different types of audio 'roles' in Final Cut Pro X. Audio will layer up just like video so as you add more audio it will appear as layered connected clips. You can also group different clips into connected storylines which can also be a way of keeping audio organised.
is there a way to loop a range on the timeline like you can in premiere (when when you are editing audio or color and need to see the same section over and over? I saw a video talking about Command + L but I think that loops the entire clip and I don't want to make a cut in the small section that I'm looping and therefore it would be looping the entire clip.
Yes command L just loops the entire clip. You would need to create a compound clip of your loop.
@@BenjaminHalsall what is a compound clip and how would that help me in this situation?
Hi BEN, When I am zoomed all the way in and need to move all the clips along (I have about fifty on my timeline)it would be great if there was a "select all to the right" command or shortcut otherwise it's a pain to have to zoom all the way out and select everything, then zoom back in and make the small adjustments time after time after time. - Is there such a thing. ?
There isn't a select forward button. The best you can do is use SHIFT+Z to zoom to the entire timeline to make your selection and then keep the playhead at the location where you want to zoom back in so it centres back on that point.
@@BenjaminHalsall looks like Apple screwed up big time not to providing such a “magic” button (which was a standard in FCP7)
How do I move the entire timeline to the right, or how do I add a new clip in the beginning?
You don't need to move it. When you drop your new clip in there the clips will be pushed back on the timeline.
@@BenjaminHalsall Thanks. One last question. I accidentally moved the entire captions lane to the top of the timeline and now there's a gap between it and the videos. How do I bring back down?
If that happens there is normally a clip on a connected layer that is wedged in-between somewhere. Scrub through your timeline and you'll find the culprit. Just drag it up.
I double clicked a clip in the timeline and it opened all the layers but on the timeline. I just want to get the timeline back to normal. HELP
