He was notorious on canceling performing... lost confidence from all major houses. He was pretty famous and popular at Europe than at States at that time.
      There is a great tenor who was even more underrated: Chris Merritt. He was sub for Neil. Can you believe that! Chris is such a grand presence by himself... would be #1 on today's stage to wipe Kaufy away 20 miles far. So sad for us today.

      @shicoff1398 2 роки тому +1

      Actually as far as squillo, when I first saw him in house in 1979 with Sam Ramey and Soprano Mitchell in Boheme in Chicago, I heard tons of ringing squillo up top, that's mostly not heard on his recordings, live or studio. That is typical of recordings, you really needed to be in house for the best idea of a voice. His career lasted a long time and he made lots of complete operatic recordings, and always there was that high quality with his singing.

    • @shicoff1398
      @shicoff1398 2 роки тому +1

      Barone, the 1979 Neil Shicoff Chicago debut in Boheme (with Sam Ramey as Colline and soprano Mitchell I had taped on " reel to reel" as the first performance was Brdcst. The rest of the shows I attended as Neil was so great and I hadn't seen him in house till then I had "Edmund St. Austell" post it for me on his you tube site , you can hear most of the "Che GELIDA" aria, from 1979 as I had him Post it long ago under "Neil Shicoff Che Gelida Manina, Chicago debut 1979 " The top B was ringing like mad with lots of Squillo every night out, you can almost hear some of it on my old tape, but in the house it was far greater for a ringing squillo up top at that time in his career , he was 30 years old then in 1979 . He is now retired of course, at age 73 tomorrow, June 2nd. 2022.

      He also did a very good run of Faust complete, in Chicago in 1987 and Sam Ramey was in that run with him. Yes and also he sang a strong run in Tosca, in 2005 with Aprile Millo and Ramey as Scarpia , I did see both, the 1987 and 2005 in the Chicago house.

    Neil Shicoff is on par with some of the very best interpreters of this role, for instance Nicolai Gedda or Franco Corelli. Actually he finds a good balance between the two, that is, his voice is more masculine than Gedda's and more slender than Corelli's. I find him ideally suited for the French repertoire and wish Colin Davis would have cast him instead of Francisco Araiza for his 1986 recording of "Faust".

    • @道-p2e
