This aria was not transposed down. The high note as written is an A natural and that is what he sang here. I never heard him before and actually I found his rendition to be excellent. He obviously is well-trained, a very sound vocal technician and musically very tasteful. Given some of the comments, I am surprised he sounded as dark and dramatic in the midrange areas of the aria as he did here for what I am told was a lyric voice generally speaking. I don't know why some people think they need to find a reason to dislike a singer enough to make factual errors. Even if it was transposed down, so what? Many arias are and by all the great tenors. This was a very solid performance.

Firstly - the opera doesn't stop there. Where's the continuation of Puccini's music, if this is an actual performance of 'Tosca'? Sacrilege to stop after the aria! Secondly - was his voice really that huge in the theatre or is there tonnes of reverb on this?

@SHICOFF1 There is no diminuendo written in the score. I have a copy. Corelli's famous version was a variation he chose, I presume for dramatic effect and because he was capable of doing it. These kinds of preferences are matters of taste, Almost no tenor sings any aria exactly as written.

Yes, a vocal embellishment -- not even written in the score that many listen for, as all important, just as he did and also some " not" real opera lovers wait for a high C and judge an entire performance by that one note, from a tenor, even if not in the score, but as an option. In "Ah Si Ben Mio" in Trovatore there are two written "trills" many tenors ignore it -cannot sing them, as Corelli and MDM do not, so what? no Biggy----- but Neil S. , Tucker, Bergonzi, Domingo and a few more do, yet nobody flames FC or Bjorling ( JB who managed it once only) even though it's written, so this person judging an entire aria and saying basically -- it's not worth anything without the Diminuendo-- I don't agree with, nice to do it, but not that important as the entire aria sung so beautifully as he did here.

@@esterbruno8604 So Ester, when we hear a tenor, we must always compare him to Corelli? But when Corelli messes up an opera in 1971 Lucia performance with bad reviews, do we as Corelli fans compare his poor performance to Di Stefano or Pavarotti in that opera? No we don't. In My Opinion, each singer or tenor should be evaluated in their own performance. Do we as Corelli fans, also talk about Corelli's short comings like running ahead of tempos to get to his great high notes, or using excessive portamento where NOT written, or occasionally scooping to his high notes, holding on to high notes forever, or his terrible performances in the French language, his flubbing of phrases, and less than impeccable diction? No we don't, because as fans, what we hear is his beautiful warm heroic voice, mezza voce, diminuendo, and exciting high notes including upper high notes that thrill our listening senses with his ability to be intimate with his listeners. Corelli's shortcomings were NOT what defined him, But as RAPAX says,'' he was a God''' was he really?

@@sugarbist Actually Corelli was a great Edgardo. And I only said that Corelli was a God because he is magnificent; i love Shicoff but surely he's inferior to Corelli. Corelli had such a talent, he was great as Edgardo too even if there aren't many registrations of him in this role. And about the French language, he couldn't sing it as a native, ok, but it wasn't that bad. And he had a great technique and he was precise most times you know.
