The music was not written by Pelageya. This is a folk song. The story is almost 350 years old - this is a legend about a dream of a Volga kossak Stepan Razin he'd seen in his sleep before he was captured and executed. Pelageya's performance of this song is one of the best I've ever heard!

I strongly suspect that Americans now taking Russian classes are seldom introduced to these songs because of the same lingering "cold war stupidities" that denied me exposure when I was young.
