As far as Yamasaki’s nationalism… I’ve only seen one of his previous films so I obviously can’t talk to his whole filmography. But that one film I have seen I think depicted imperial Japan in a very negative light. That film is The Great War of Archimedes(2019). It’s set pre world war 2 and features a main character that is very anti military and hates what Japan has become. So much so that he wants to leave to America. He only stays because of the innocent people that are at stake if Japan starts a war with the US. The film shows this through a haunting premonition of the firebombing of Tokyo, and the film clearly lays out that Japan’s own actions lead to this. The film is heavily critical of imperial Japan and the ultimate conclusion the film takes goes along the lines of, “Japan needed to be reborn because of the path it has chosen.” Of course this is just one film, and I have heard that his film eternal zero has some more nationalistic qualities. But to me this isn’t enough to warrant worrying about just yet. IMO, the Great War of Archimedes did an amazing job of depicting a fictionalized story set in this era that remains critical of the Japanese government. And given its one of Yamasaki’s most recent films, I think it could give you a good idea of what to expect from minus one. I would recommend people check it out to make up their own mind of course. I think it’s available for rent on prime video. Of course this doesn’t mean that Yamasaki has absolutely no nationalistic ideas in his films, but I do think it shows that he can be critical of the Japanese government as well. So for the time being, I’m gonna stay optimistic about Minus One and I don’t think anyone should start panicking until we know more.
Isn't it great how we're living in a time where we can experience a tragic, Villainous Godzilla terrorizing people, and a heroic savior Godzilla, holding supremacy over other monsters. Back in the day you would have to wait and hope you'd see the portrayal of the big g you were hoping for, now we're getting two at the same time!
As an inspiring artist and creature designer (if you couldn’t tell from my profile picture, lol), it’s awesome to see some early concept art and storyboards of Godzilla minus one and I love that kind of stuff in a film’s production. I can’t wait for more concept art and storyboards from Godzilla minus one’s production. On the topic of storyboards, I was working on a storyboard project as an art project in my senior year of a scene I had dreamed about from my Godzilla fan-made story called The Return of Godzilla: The New Age of Monsters. The storyboard project is currently on hold at the moment because I was just burnt out working on it for a while and I felt like working on something else.
Based on what i've seen of Yamazaki's work, he's really good with balancing out multiple storylines occuring at the same time and making audience invested in characters.
I just love how -1 Goji is absolutely terrifying!! I want to add that the head that looks like a dragon looks like a wise old dragon that we love and take inspiration from.. Like Quetzal from Dragon Tales... But younger when he had the hot daddy vibes lmao.. that's the only way I can describe it.
When I first seen the design for Godzilla I was kinda disappointed that they reused his design from Godzilla the Ride. But after more images were released and I got to see more of him, i really like the design it looks so badass. Though the only thing I’d change is Godzilla’s head size because to me it feels oddly small
I don't know much about Yamazaki's work, but I do know he was the one responsible for the Godzilla ride at Universal Japan, and, more importantly, he's the one who directed LUPIN THE THIRD: THE FIRST, a movie I love from another franchise that I love. So, if nothing else, GODZILLA MINUS ONE will have plenty entertainment value, which is sorely needed after three recent disappointing Toho Godzilla projects.
Great reporting, those statues and artwork look amazing! I really hope that the us military is in it so it retains its historical accuracy. Still hoping for a General Douglas Macarthur look alike actor as well haha
Is there going to be a Godzilla minus one art book as I am trying to find out please can you find out what is going on with the Godzilla book and will it come to the uk?! From Godzilla minus one fan will it be in English please?! Thank you!
@DMan1954 please make a video reflecting on the American Godzilla we never got. There is a Gryphon vs Godzilla fan film circulating based on those original concept arts that's freaking amazing with the found footage technique they used!!!?
3 things. Will this Godzilla spew a white mist, or a blue beam? Will Oppenheimers success help Godzilla minus One box office take, seeing the subject matter crosses so many paths? And lastly, will the Hollywood strike boost Godzilla x Kongs box office take much like covid "supposedly did" with Godzilla vs Kong 2021?
It was nice seeing the First Cav patch on the poster behind the soldiers shaking hands at 20:07. As a former First Cav soldier in Iraq, I feel obligated to say "First Team!" Everything you said about the JSDF history is 100 percent correct. So maybe this will be sort of an "alternative history" approach if there is going to be a Japanese military/self defense force. Or (and I know this is less likely) depending on how long this is after WW2 it might be they use soldiers not yet fully de-activated after the surrender on the Missouri?
Some of the sketches remind me abit of the cheesey "Gorgo" images. The incorporation of the little ear flaps. So much of the G Man's evolution has come and gone...but then again.... his origin is nuclear. Has the radiation made him immortal? Or sterile..or Asexual or (gasp) Kaiju-sexual? The Godzilla premise is so rich with possibilities. Keep him primal and organically smart...without being "cheeky or bombastic" and we can look forward to years of great giant monster movies. Enjoy your channel greatly!
12:42 The 2014 design was not fat AT ALL. he is much slender in comparison to the ACTUAL fat redesign of 2019. the 2019 redesign is fat, not the 2014 design.
It is to mad we are not getting the old Original sound godzilla back as or becoming the king of kings godzilla and everyone knows who I am talking about to you ?

Oh those people... When everyone first saw the design of Godzilla the ride, they wanted to see it in a feature film. When they saw it in a feature film - they were disappointed that it was a reused design. Just a big facepalm...
9:16 Nah, this design just sucks. they should've learn from the 2014 design and make the new design realistic, like making it to look like an ACTUAL reptile. like, I'm not saying they should've bring back the 2014 design. what I'm saying is that they needed to make the new design faithful and traditional to the Japanese design while still realistic and believable as much as possible. just like the 2014 design.
I’ve expressed the same concerns regarding WWll denial/pride. I was hoping they’d go for a more GMK route with this movie when it came to that subject. It won’t ruin the movie for me similar to Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, but it’s going to stick out like a sore thumb.
It depends on execution of course, but bemoaning the vast loss of Japanese life and resenting the US aren't really that unreasonable. If it outright glorifies imperial Japan or villainizes their victims, sure, but otherwise, being bitter about having your empire destroyed by another empire and having your country used as a testing ground for the worst weapon ever are pretty reasonable things to be bitter about.
- Rape of Nanking - Bataan Death March - Unit 731 experiments - Manila Massacre - Comfort women system - Massacres in the Philippines - Battle of Okinawa civilian casualties - Bombing of Pearl Harbor
Thanks for sending me down the Yamazaki political rabbit hole. From my experience the Far Right and Far Left cry the hardest over cinema offending their political sensibilities. People on the far left disliked Shin Godzilla because of it's perceived politics. I'm now interested in seeing Yamazaki's military films set during WWII.
Wait! People on the far left cry over cinema offending thier political sensibilities? Since when, & got any links to match the Juggernaut called right wing UA-camrs whineing about cinema politics? It may be a couple here & there, but not even close to the zany Critical Sphinkter/ Mr H reviews types lol. They currently zeroed in on Barbie hurting thier questionable manhood if you need links lol
I won't touch the toxic discourse around Barbie, and Shin Godzilla has several allusions to japan being restricted in military matters as a result of the old empire's bloody wars that only ended up bringing Japan into ruin. "The old imperial army thought like that. During the Second World War, their armchair theories led to the loss of over 3 million Japanese lives. So beware of unfounded optimism." That's in the English dub of Shin Godzilla, so I don't know if it's accurate.

19:15 The new movie is definitely going to be a Masterpiece! for being dark, serious and having an Anti-Nuclear message! also the technical level looks so much professionally-done! it seriously gives me those 1984's "THE RETURN OF GODZILLA" vibes, 2005's "KING KONG" vibes, 2008's "CLOVERFIELD" vibes & 2014's "GODZILLA" vibes! The design, however... LOOKS LIKE GARBAGE, I'M SORRY. what they REALLY should've do is to make it realistic-looking & believable-looking as much as possible while still sticking to the faithfulness of the Japanese design, just like how the 2014 design did.
Aside from being overweight, I'm very bothered by how the feet on more recent godzilla designs are just way too big and the head is a bit too small for my tastes.
I really hope the film doesn't potrays imperal japan as good because like one Google search of imperial japan and they committed so much heinous shit its not funny hope minus 1 isnt revisionism propaganda

I hope godzilla is a villain like shin godzilla because we are getting a lot more heroic godzilla’s.
Don’t worry, he will be.
I wouldn’t consider Shin or any Godzilla heroes. Villains or antihero’s mostly.
I think for a more fitting "Villain" Godzilla is GMK Godzilla, cause(for me Atleast) Shin Godzilla was a creature trying to survive while on Japan.
Shin isn't the villain America is 😂
Shin is really an anti hero, an innocent creature stuck in a body made to kill, his theme song is him talking, but this one is definitely a villain
Definitely a tragic villian

Two questions and a compliment. What happened to your arm? How old are you? Nice shirt.

Even though this Godzilla’s wrath might rival GMK’s, he looks adorable holding that train.
