The problem with megalon is that he's generally just remembered as Gigan's tag team partner, not his own unique threat like King Ghidorah is. Which I kind of don't mind as the two compliment each other pretty well in personalities (Gigan always seems like more of an intelligent, scheming monster to contrast Megalon's brutish personality/methodology), but it also hampers them bringing him back solo.
I'm glad that Japan isn't shying away from doing more action packed Godzilla scenes like how he was in the older movies. It's nice that they're focusing on the more serious side of Godzilla in Reiwa, but it's also nice that they haven't completely forgotten this side of Godzilla even if it's in a more low budgeted film.
my understanding is that these have been considered a continuation from Godzilla Vs Destroyah. and this is the grown godzilla jr. but i could be wrong. it'll probably be my head canon either way

I like that they turned that campy slide/drop kick from the original into something bad ass. The new ability of being able to focus his atomic energy into different appendages is interesting. I can only imagine what a charged tail smash would look like!
Once again, this team knocked it out of the park. The combination of live action with CG was a nice touch. Who knew Megalon could be this intimidating! Love the upgrades they gave Megalon while respecting the character, plus the design is fantastic. But, more than anything, it's nice seeing these old school fights done in a modern way.
That was the best one yet by a huge margin!! The redesign on Megalon was phenomenal! They did a great job of showing the devastation the city was experiencing. The fight choreography was outstanding. This Megalon actually looked and behaved like it was more than a match for Big G. I loved it! My biggest heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in these short films. From the ToHo execs that green lit the project all the way down to the guy fetching Tea and Noodles for everyone. A really big Canuckle Head Gojira fan is very very happy these past few years.

As a kid, I had a copy of the original Godzilla vs Megalon on vhs. I wore that tape down watching it over and over again. So glad to see this now as an adult.
Wasn't expecting a full 10 minute short - even so it breezed by quickly! This was an incredible little short film. Beautiful work on behalf of all involved! These have been, and will continue to be a pleasure to look forward to every Godzilla Day.

This is definitely Junior alright… the only irrefutable proof we need is his flashing red eyes when he’s in danger. He seems to almost have Super Godzilla’s punch.

The first one was a 1 minute fan film, but it was so well received that they became officially blessed by Toho, got funding and made a longer film last year (featuring Gigan, look up "G vs. G" to find it since you love the 70's kaiju!), and another one this year, which you just watched with Megalon. The Godzilla in this series is supposedly Godzilla Junior from the 90's series of films (Mechagodzilla II, SpaceGodzilla, and Destoroyah). This one, Godzilla vs. Megalon 2023, released at the 70th anniversary Godzilla festival held a few days ago, same day as the release of Godzilla Minus One. In other words, it's a good time to be a Godzilla fan, there is s ton of new stuff coming out by very talented artists! Godzilla is awesome, I hope your son enjoys it as much as I did when I was a kid! By the way, I started with the 70's Goji movies too and they are still my favorites!

The fact that G Junior did the infamous flying drop kick was a great shout out to the showa era. I also like that he used a nuclear pulse to propel himself to do it. His fighting sense is incredible.
I like that they made them more agile but still "heavy" when moving, and the classic soundtrack is great too. Also liked how they used Godzilla's 80's growl like roar and breath animation style.
This did not disappoint! I liked how human perspectives were added - "vs. Gigan Rex", as amazing as that was, felt a little empty without the pedestrians. This short feels like its actually part of the world rather than just a setting for kaiju fights. The glow-up to Megalon was magnificent, as well as the modern rendition of his abilities. This managed to overcome the original suit's campiness while still keeping it recognizable. Godzilla looks as great as he did last year. I love the new abilities he depicted. It's funny; I had actually conceived a sort of "atomic punch/claw swipe" in a version of how I might do G, and to see it in action was awesome! And I had hoped this would have a version of the infamous flying-kick, but was worried it would break the more grounded/serious tone of this short. How it was depicted here managed to keep the hilarity while not breaking the tone (I actually had to pause and rewind at that moment just because I wasn't expecting it to be shown as such; it brought me such joy to see it preserved). Absolutely incredible work! It's great we're getting a sort of mini-series like this.
Very well said, I can definitely say the same here, I’m honestly really glad that they added humans into this rather than just having a kaiju battle in a deserted city, it really did feel empty without any people. I liked this film so much better than the last one, it’s a major improvement, the CG looks more realistic and the Megalon design is really badass, it’s the perfect modern rendition for him, I loved when Godzilla did the drop kick while flying, if that isn’t epic, I don’t know what is. That was a brilliant homage to the original Godzilla vs Megalon. These short films are just beautiful, We are definitely gonna be getting more of these in the future.
The flying kick really feels like a cross of the 1990s nuclear pulse and the beams from the back in Shin Godzilla, and looks like the tail slide kick from 1973 and the surprise "kangaroo" type kick in 1962 rolled into one. He's airborne once again, like 1971. His powers here are a good evolution of the nuclear pulse and seems to take inspiration from Legendary's movies in a way. It all reminds me of Godzilla Vs Kong's Mechagodzilla, bizarrely enough.
The fact that a Heisei Reiwa Godzilla did a Showa blast of into the sky doing a sick dropkick towards Megalon was highly unexpected! But what can I say, Jr. learned from the best, and expanded his battle IQ
It's nice to see Megalon getting a quality performance. Poor guy was basically a sidekick in his own movie originally (which, Gigan was, too, to be fair). This was such a cool use of his powers, from the heat blasts to the electrical bursts, and Godzilla doing the same with the atomic channeling. Also the cheeky slide kick scene inclusion was just perfect. Bravo.
I loved every second of it. Megalon was great, and I loved the modern take on the flying kick the Big G does. Thanks to all involved in the making of this. If this is what we're getting for his 69th birthday I can't wait to see what will happen when he turns 70 next year!
If someone told me beforehand that Godzilla was going to do a dropkick, I would have expected something weird. But this was incredible. Every part of it was incredible.
This was incredible! Awesome work to the team that made it! This short had everything in it to make it a good watch, explore new abilities, and give Megalon a proper role that he desperately lacked in years prior. The Godzilla design was interesting too. A shin/minus one/heisei looking thing. Please do more like this with Gigan, Rodan, and Anguirus. The old timers need some love.
I honestly loved a more intimidating version of Megalon i love how japan dosent shy away from making very well made godzilla mini movies like this and im glad that they added the tail slide to this one theyve really respected the work of the original
Nobody's talking about the fact they revived the most forgotten Godzilla ability: The atomic/nuclear punchs, these were first used and introduced in Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla. Its kind of sad that many G-fans doesnt even know this ability.
I think this is my favorite iteration of modern Godzilla. It nails everything about what makes Godzilla, specially the Heisei era, so cool. Intimidating enemies. Chaotic destruction and explosions. Epic moments ala WWE. Silly but fun sci-fi elements. A little creepy in some ways. Godzilla design is amazing, bulky but mobile. A little ridiculous, but very cool. Whoever made this has a deep love for the franchise, and understands what fundamentally works about it.
I hope King Ghidorah is his next opponent and the video is as long as the Gigan Rex and Megalon video's combined as it starts off with Godzilla swimming in the sea and coming to shore.
My favorite thing about this is how he moves like showa godzilla without being super goofy and in a scientific way, using his pulse to push against the ground and launch himself I LOVE IT!!!!
At this point I can only wonder who he fights next, so far it’s been gigan, then megalon, so the next logical conclusion would be more showa era kaiju being moved into the heisei era… considering megalon appeared in 1973… it can only mean that MechaGodzilla will appear next….
After getting to see the full thing, I have to say this is possibly my favorite Godzilla content of all time. Every decision made is absolutely fantastic. Megalon's design is gorgeous and I really love the decision to make his arms like pile bunkers that combine into the classic drill! That first landing was so breathtaking and every impact lands with such weight. The close combat techniques for Godzilla were a stroke of genius as well! Such a glorious revelation of that clashing punch. Super happy that you paid homage to the silly jump kick from the original movie in such an exciting way! Loved it so much. Thanks for all the hard work.
Wow - as someone who literally grew up watching Godzilla since I was a toddler, this is wonderful. With the advancement in technology kaiju really start to become terrifying. LOOOOOVE they kept with the classic "man-in-suit" like design as a node to the classics. So happy to see this an look forward to more.
After decades of the fandom treating his debut film as a punchline, seeing Megalon get to kick some serious ass for his 50th birthday is *so* satisfying!
Eh, all 3 of them designs are equally great for what they are trying to achieve. Their designs reflect their characters pretty nicely IMO Legendary is a collosal force of nature. -1.0 is a mutant born of nuclear. Gemstone / Junior(?) here is more of a powerful heroic force.
After 50 years, Megalon has gotten more recognition. He’s such a unique kaiju and I wish he was brought back for other titles.
Megalon and Gigan HAVE to be used. They are just as iconic as King Ghidorah and Mothra in my opinion.

They did a fantastic job with Megalon, the wings and his drill-arms have never looked as amazing as they did here, he had an almost heroic vibe even.

@@joeb2588 Some of my info might be wrong but here's what I understand. This is the 3rd part of a series of short films which began about 4 years ago. The first one was a 1 minute fan film, but it was so well received that they became officially blessed by Toho, got funding and made a longer film last year (featuring Gigan, look up "G vs. G" to find it since you love the 70's kaiju!), and another one this year, which you just watched with Megalon. The Godzilla in this series is supposedly Godzilla Junior from the 90's series of films (Mechagodzilla II, SpaceGodzilla, and Destoroyah). This one, Godzilla vs. Megalon 2023, released at the 70th anniversary Godzilla festival held a few days ago, same day as the release of Godzilla Minus One. In other words, it's a good time to be a Godzilla fan, there is s ton of new stuff coming out by very talented artists! Godzilla is awesome, I hope your son enjoys it as much as I did when I was a kid! By the way, I started with the 70's Goji movies too and they are still my favorites!

今回はメガロの登場でゴジラが大暴れしていますが、もしかしたら散発的にゴジラは現れていたのかもしれませんね（それこそ地震や台風のように）。
平和な世界（今はちょっと現実も平和な世とは言い難いですが）に一石を投じ警鐘を鳴らすのがゴジラの役目。非日常過ぎてどこか現実として受け入れられず、正常性バイアスに陥っている令和の日本人に向けてのメッセージ性もあったりするんじゃないかなと、あなたの返信を見て思いました。

The fact that G Junior did the infamous flying drop kick was a great shout out to the showa era. I also like that he used a nuclear pulse to propel himself to do it. His fighting sense is incredible.

I like that they made them more agile but still "heavy" when moving, and the classic soundtrack is great too.
Also liked how they used Godzilla's 80's growl like roar and breath animation style.
すごく面白かったし、これまでになかったゴジラの闘い方にセンスを感じた。またこういう短編でも中編でもいいからどんどん制作してほしい。

This did not disappoint! I liked how human perspectives were added - "vs. Gigan Rex", as amazing as that was, felt a little empty without the pedestrians. This short feels like its actually part of the world rather than just a setting for kaiju fights.
The glow-up to Megalon was magnificent, as well as the modern rendition of his abilities. This managed to overcome the original suit's campiness while still keeping it recognizable.
Godzilla looks as great as he did last year. I love the new abilities he depicted. It's funny; I had actually conceived a sort of "atomic punch/claw swipe" in a version of how I might do G, and to see it in action was awesome! And I had hoped this would have a version of the infamous flying-kick, but was worried it would break the more grounded/serious tone of this short. How it was depicted here managed to keep the hilarity while not breaking the tone (I actually had to pause and rewind at that moment just because I wasn't expecting it to be shown as such; it brought me such joy to see it preserved).
Absolutely incredible work! It's great we're getting a sort of mini-series like this.
Very well said, I can definitely say the same here, I’m honestly really glad that they added humans into this rather than just having a kaiju battle in a deserted city, it really did feel empty without any people. I liked this film so much better than the last one, it’s a major improvement, the CG looks more realistic and the Megalon design is really badass, it’s the perfect modern rendition for him, I loved when Godzilla did the drop kick while flying, if that isn’t epic, I don’t know what is. That was a brilliant homage to the original Godzilla vs Megalon. These short films are just beautiful, We are definitely gonna be getting more of these in the future.
The animation is also a lot more polished, "vs Gigan Rex" had a lot of janky movements that really looked off, they're absent from here.
Absolutely disappointed
The flying kick really feels like a cross of the 1990s nuclear pulse and the beams from the back in Shin Godzilla, and looks like the tail slide kick from 1973 and the surprise "kangaroo" type kick in 1962 rolled into one. He's airborne once again, like 1971. His powers here are a good evolution of the nuclear pulse and seems to take inspiration from Legendary's movies in a way. It all reminds me of Godzilla Vs Kong's Mechagodzilla, bizarrely enough.

The fact that a Heisei Reiwa Godzilla did a Showa blast of into the sky doing a sick dropkick towards Megalon was highly unexpected! But what can I say, Jr. learned from the best, and expanded his battle IQ

It's nice to see Megalon getting a quality performance. Poor guy was basically a sidekick in his own movie originally (which, Gigan was, too, to be fair). This was such a cool use of his powers, from the heat blasts to the electrical bursts, and Godzilla doing the same with the atomic channeling.
Also the cheeky slide kick scene inclusion was just perfect. Bravo.
Eeyup, I liked seeing those innovative ways for Godzilla to use his powers.

I loved every second of it. Megalon was great, and I loved the modern take on the flying kick the Big G does. Thanks to all involved in the making of this. If this is what we're getting for his 69th birthday I can't wait to see what will happen when he turns 70 next year!

This was incredible! Awesome work to the team that made it! This short had everything in it to make it a good watch, explore new abilities, and give Megalon a proper role that he desperately lacked in years prior. The Godzilla design was interesting too. A shin/minus one/heisei looking thing.
Please do more like this with Gigan, Rodan, and Anguirus. The old timers need some love.

I honestly loved a more intimidating version of Megalon i love how japan dosent shy away from making very well made godzilla mini movies like this and im glad that they added the tail slide to this one theyve really respected the work of the original

Nobody's talking about the fact they revived the most forgotten Godzilla ability: The atomic/nuclear punchs, these were first used and introduced in Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla. Its kind of sad that many G-fans doesnt even know this ability.

I think this is my favorite iteration of modern Godzilla. It nails everything about what makes Godzilla, specially the Heisei era, so cool.
Intimidating enemies. Chaotic destruction and explosions. Epic moments ala WWE. Silly but fun sci-fi elements. A little creepy in some ways.
Godzilla design is amazing, bulky but mobile. A little ridiculous, but very cool.
Whoever made this has a deep love for the franchise, and understands what fundamentally works about it.
I hope King Ghidorah is his next opponent and the video is as long as the Gigan Rex and Megalon video's combined as it starts off with Godzilla swimming in the sea and coming to shore.
My favorite thing about this is how he moves like showa godzilla without being super goofy and in a scientific way, using his pulse to push against the ground and launch himself I LOVE IT!!!!
Into a drop kick no less! I love that they paid homage to the original, goofy looking drop kick from the original.
At this point I can only wonder who he fights next, so far it’s been gigan, then megalon, so the next logical conclusion would be more showa era kaiju being moved into the heisei era… considering megalon appeared in 1973… it can only mean that MechaGodzilla will appear next….

After getting to see the full thing, I have to say this is possibly my favorite Godzilla content of all time. Every decision made is absolutely fantastic. Megalon's design is gorgeous and I really love the decision to make his arms like pile bunkers that combine into the classic drill! That first landing was so breathtaking and every impact lands with such weight. The close combat techniques for Godzilla were a stroke of genius as well! Such a glorious revelation of that clashing punch. Super happy that you paid homage to the silly jump kick from the original movie in such an exciting way!

Wow - as someone who literally grew up watching Godzilla since I was a toddler, this is wonderful. With the advancement in technology kaiju really start to become terrifying. LOOOOOVE they kept with the classic "man-in-suit" like design as a node to the classics. So happy to see this an look forward to more.

After decades of the fandom treating his debut film as a punchline, seeing Megalon get to kick some serious ass for his 50th birthday is *so* satisfying!
Megalon is such an underrated monster because his film was so corny. It's great seeing him get a revamp.

熱線のエネルギーをまとったパンチはVSスペースゴジラとかでやってましたよ。スぺゴジのクリスタルを攻撃するときに青い稲妻をまとった腕でクリスタルを薙ぎ払ったりしてました。まあ当時のは撮影技術的な問題であまり迫力がなくて目立たなかったですが。
