- Apple Pencil TIP COVER vs SCREEN PROTECTOR
Here I test and review some Apple Pencil tip covers and compare the concept to matt screen protectors. Apple pencil tip wear can be a problem, but how is the drawing experience of a pencil tip cover in comparison?

Thanks for your review, I didn't know about the tip option before seeing your video, I think its a great option for me especially as I purely want it to make drawing on my iPad a bit nicer. Its just a hobby for me so I even with the rubbishcurrancy conversation AUD, those 5 tips are going to lasts very long time. Also compare that price to the paperlike pencil grip, that bit of rubber or silicone costs $60 USD for x2 plus shipping, now that's a rip-off, €18 for x5 is nothing compared with that. I very much want to improve my drawing, so will be subscribing to your channel, cheers from Australia.😋 I do agree that a sharper pointed tip would be an improvement, assuming it doesn't wear down significantly faster.
I've ordered the Artist Clssic set, $71 + $10 delivery AUD, pretty good I think considering that's for a 5x pack of tips, 1x pencil grip and 1x drawing glove. Compare that with the paperlike pencil grip that costs $60 USD so probably $80 AUD plus delivery for 2x.
Basically, wearing a shoe is better than covering the earth with leather.
I love that😹
Correct👍
hahahahaha amazing comparation bro
so no paperlike then?
👍 kudos
Thanks for this! I found that I really needed a matt screen protector to deal with the slippery quality of the iPad but I do get annoyed at the loss of visual quality AND how it makes the touch experience worse (meaning, when using my fingers, I have to push harder than I otherwise would). Here's a silly question: WHY DOESN'T APPLE JUST SELL AN ALTERNATE TIP FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT SOME RESISTANCE??? It could be rubber or felt or whatever and one could simply screw it on in place of the standard tip (rather than on top of it thus making it blunter). Seriously, Apple spends so much time and energy marketing the iPad to artists yet they won't provide this simple solution which Microsoft has been doing for years with their Surface Pens. Do they WANT people to cover up a great screen with a textured protector that washes out the colors?
I totally agree, they could sell loads strange they don’t
@@JamesJulier-Artist Time for a letter-writing campaign?
Haha I’m not sure they’d listen. I somehow think they wouldn’t want to concede that the experience wasn’t already perfection as it is currently. I think creating new nibs they would almost feel is admission of a mistake.
A pencil with such a tip would absolutely destroy an unprotected screen. Yes, you could use a protective glass on the ipad, but apple cares only for the vanilla experience, thus they won’t care for that option.
@@Nocmora they could make a tip out of a stiff textured foam since it wouldn’t damage the screen and could provide a better texture
Hey James, we really appreciate this. Thank you so much for taking the time to review our product :)
Hey no problem! 😊

@Aquatic Ape i had the exact same thought when he first said the price... I thought it was 80 lol
@Aquatic Ape same here

Just got my first apple pencil and a recent iPad to use Procreate and am trying to learn everything i can, hence finding myself here. Thanks so much for doing such an informative review and also discussing how the tools affect your use and technique with the canvas. These are all things I'm learning and adapting to :)
Great review, love the honest presentation and explanation on the slighter nuances while sketching.
I’ve been seeing ads for these for a while! I had to get rid of my matt screen protector because the visual interference was too much for me to ignore but the slick texture of the screen annoyed me. This seems like the perfect alternative, especially since I’ve finally worn through a pencil nib
Nice! It's been popping up on my ad recommendations on IG and FB so I wasn't sure if I'm going to get a screen protector or this. Thanks for the review 💙
Thank for this. I was actually thinking of purchasing them myself. I now have a better understanding. Cheers for that. 👍🏾✨
Happy to have helped
Thanks for the review, looking forward to watching some of your painting tutorials
I am really learning a lot from your tutorials. Being new to digital art I need all the honest right to the point advice I can get. I trust you will always give it to me. Thanks
woahh dude!! ur the first youtuber ive seen that interacts so much with their followers 🤯
Haha well it’s kinda rude not to if I can find the time I will!
Thank you for the video comparison! I’ve been eyeing these, as even with a screen protector I don’t feel I get enough grip. Good to know that the more expensive version actually is better quality and isn’t just the same cheap product repackaged! :)
Often it is simply a package difference but there genuinely is a difference
In procreate turning on the cursor indicator might help to be more accurate with the bigger pen tip cover. Amazing paintings 🖼 by the way.
Thank you 😊 it’s easy enough to figure out where the mark is going to be made really, it’s just ever so slightly less precise feeling.
So so glad I turned the notifications to your channel on! I’ve been waiting for someone to post a video on this exact topic. Thnak you!
Ah that’s great thank you 🙏
James, thanks for review. Love your gorgeous art!
Thank you very much 😊
Thx for this precious video, I was looking for this informations!
Happy to help
Just found this channel, thank you for the review, will follow for the amazing art work and tutorials :D
Very informative, Thank you. Your artwork is amazing!!
Thank you so much for this in-depth review. Very helpful!!! Subscribed!
I use the paperlike brand screen protector and a tip cover. The tip cover helped so much. I have the cheaper china made tips from Amazon and they are great. Its the best combo I have found!
What's the friction like? Is there a lot of drag when drawing and does the screen protector eat up the nib?
THank you very much for this much needed review! I say much needed because while there's a lot of artists talking about the paper like matte screen options, I've yet to see anyone on my artist list talking about these. My issue has been that I don't want something to alter the screen, especially since I'm pretty much used to the glass anyway, but maybe something for the pen like these nibs (I have seen their ads, but very few reviews). I might actually go for them when I have some extra money to spare since it's easy to slip them on and off, so I'd leave em off for sketching and on for painting/coloring :) You've certainly made my idea of them a whole lot clearer!!
Well I’m glad to have helped, they are definitely worth a try!
Thank you buddy for this video. I had no idea there was even a product like this out there.
My pleasure
Great comparison, great information! Thank you!
I bought them. I love them. Thanks for the review.
I enjoy the tips for note taking.
Your work looks fantastic!
I prefer the screen protector for 2 separate reasons. Yes, you do have more control vs just glass, but also I find it manages fingerprints much better than without. I still have an older iPad I use for media consumption and I find myself cleaning it constantly because of fingerprints, something you don't notice as much with a screen protector.
Very true
I find finger marks on the screen are annoying not just because of how the look, but they also change the drag on the Apple pencil, making it sort of 'slip' or 'skip' on the surface a bit (not sure how to describe it.) Do you find the screen protector helps with this too?
@@charitygoldart yes, it helps too with that
@@alejandroromito thank you !!
Awesome video mate!
Thanks, James! I've been using a screen protector, and was considering the Pen Tips, but now I think I will stick with the solution I have. Thanks for the review, that was very helpful.

thank you for reviewing this, really helps
My pleasure
Thank you so much >< I’m going to try !!!!
Great honest review… it’s what the world needs.
Awesome video. Imma try these.
Thanks for the comparison 👍
This was really helpful. I appreciate the time you took to give an honest review.
My pleasure
Coming from a samsung tab with a rubbery tip, I'm glad there are options like these for the ipad and apple pencil. I don't really like the look of the textured screen protector and opting for a glass one. Thanks for this!!
Really helpful, thanks. 🙏
I am using a matte screen protector (because I like the texture and I want the anti glare function to protect my eyes) but combined that with the apple pencil (no rubber cover) I realised that the matte screen wears down the tip at a quick rate and I wish I had watched your video before this happened. So, I got myself the cheap rubber cover and yes, when used with matte it feels really draggy, I don't think I have the patience for my art process with this amount of resistance. At this point my priorities are protecting my ipad screen and reducing the wear and tear rate of the apple pencil tip, so I'm thinking about trying out the tempered glass screen protector. Thank you for your video!
I just came across your channel yesterday, and purchased an Apple Pencil shortly after!
Just ordered the Pen Tips nibs. I use the Paper Like Screen and it wears down the tip every 6 weeks. Compared to the price of the replacement tips from Apple, the Pen Tips are a deal. Thank you for your advice
Happy if it helped 😊
How are the apple pen tips, if anyone tried them sofar?
What a beauty !!!
😆
Very good and honest review. I do like writing with texture...appreciate the honesty about writing with a matte protector.
James, thanks for the information on the tips. The drop protection IS a great 👍 point...
I appreciate this honest review. I too have pretty much gotten used to the apple pencil on glass. It's not a perfect experience, but I don't think that the downsides of a matte screen protector are worth it. These tips sound interesting, but probably not a game changer.
Ok
Just bought both iPad and apple pencil. Still wondering if I can use them without any protection without covering iPad in scratches
Really helpful - Thanks :)
Would be better if Apple or a third party would just manufacture a screw on replacement tip that does the same thing.
I totally agree and honestly I expected this to happen ever since the first Apple Pencil was released...but nothing 🤷♂️
That way you have to spend extra money on the tip. Why do you think they removed the headphone Jack?

very helpful. thank you
Thanks for the input! I hate my screen protector (supposed to be for artists and not that cheap) and I saw an ad for these rubber tips but did not know if it was worth it or not. First I'm gonna take the protector off but depending of how it feels, I might try these tips.
Yeah it’s worth a try to see what works best for you
Same for me, I will buy the tips,
If you want to watch a film on the Ipad it´s easier without screen protector and if you want to write in notability/Good Notes the standar tip will burn out. Thanks
Did you try them? Any update on how they felt?
Thank you James!
My pleasure
Very, very good revieuw!!! Thank you so much😊
Thank you
Waiting for my product to arrive. Pen.tips is friendly for people buying from outside Europe, too. Hopefully I will enjoy the experience using this product. Thank you for making this video and your recommendation, especially because you compared pen.tips with the cheap version of silicon tips (which are what available here), and makes me opt to buy pen.tips even if I have to ship internationally.
Been wondering about this. thank you for making this video!
Happy to try to help, hope it does!
@@JamesJulier-Artist are there any suggested video for me to learn how to draw on procreate?( just downloaded the application few weeks ago,but not really sure how to make the most of it
Omg thank you so much! I was looking for a way to keep my pencil last since I’ll be drawing a lot. But I think I better off without the cover, because I do a lot of lineart and it’s more comfortable to know where my lines were drawn
Can i ask which cover do you use?
Oooh thank you for this video. I didn't know these existed with all the iPad art based videos I've been watching. I've been set on just getting a normal glass screen protector since it's such a shame to dull down the screen on such an expensive product. Great alternative, will try it out once I get an iPad, hopefully later this year after they announce any new releases.
Why don’t you just settle for one of the current ipads? I don’t think the newer models will be a drastic change😲

I use the paper like 2. I tried inexpensive matte screen protectors but it felt like drawing on gravel. The paper like 2 uses a different type of method of making the texture that doesn’t distort the screen much. I like that it also diffuses light a bit (not as much as a standard one) to cut glare. It feels a bit like sketching on standard note paper.
I haven’t noticed much wear on my pencil nib, but realize that the screen cover is a disposable art supply and will wear out.
The screen even takes on the look of a paper book. It’s odd to say but sometimes I forget it’s an iPad. I’ve shown it to people who aren’t iPad users and they think it’s paper at first. (Sitting on a table)
Another thing to consider is quality of your installation. It’s easy to have bubbles or dust under the cover if you aren’t careful. That decreases the experience, naturally. They come in 2 packs.
Yeah I quite enjoyed paper like initially, I might give the second version a go
I want to protect my screen, but I would also like to use the tip covers. Do you think a combination of a glass screen protector and tip cover would be doable, or would it not register the strokes? I appreciate any advice!
Works like the old rubber styli: RUNS AWAY SCREAMING!
I’ve been using the protective rubber nibs a lot lately and I think it’s a lot better grip especially when I am drawing. I’ve just purchased 27 rubber nibs from eBay for £3.89 and the quality of the nibs is absolutely really good, there is an assortment of different colours to choose from and I am using them with my 1st generation Apple Pencil. I do have a gorilla glass screen protector on my 9 th gen iPad and works really well.
Hey mate please could you share the eBay link for these nibs. I’d also like to purchase
@@zoohang6963 27x Replacement Silicone Tips High Sensitivity Nib Cover for Apple Pencil, the seller is called biggarage. The nibs are really good to really good quality. But they gone up in price at £4.27.
Great!
Do they damage or scratch the iPad screen itself over time or is it easy to just swipe off any smudges ?
I have hand tremors and those are amazing for me. Also the Bleakteir ones are good as well, but wear out quicker.
Ah that’s great that they help with this!
Good to know, I also have hand tremours.
I like the cheaper silicone tips, which improve both the writing and drawing experiences for me.
I enjoy watching your videos so much! Thank you for uploading! :D

Thanks for the review just ordered a new ipad air and came across your review.. Will be getting a glass screen protector but not these tips .. it's fun to see a dutch company come with these tips as i am a dutch citizen.. but it's to expensive for what it is. as apple tips cost 25 euro on amazonNL so i don't need to skimp on tips i expect to use a tip for 6 to 12 months if not longer.. so a pack of 4 new tips will last me a long time.. My take away is i love these type of honest real use reviews BIG HELP...All the best greetings from The Netherlands.
After many years of matte... I’ve gone back to a naked screen... I’m really enjoying the clarity! I don’t miss the texture at all.
I decided this too, although the tiny scratches upset me
@@JamesJulier-Artist oh yikes... I haven’t seen any yet... that would make me go back to using one. Thanks for the heads up.
No problem
@@geckonia maybe a tempered glass screen protector would prevent it. I only say maybe because I don’t know how it would affect the sensitivity for the pencil.
I think a clear a glass screen protector would probably be fine. I will probably order a few different things in and do a video
Thank you for posting 📫 this video 📫 📹. You have a new subscriber. Keep up the great work 📫 📹 ❤️.
Hey James, you may want to try using a masking tape, cuts it into a bow tie shape, and wrap around your pencil tip. It works wonder for me, even with glass protector, and you can easily replace it after it wears out. Would highly recommended!
Very interesting! I’ll try it out.
It might scratch your screen though. I wouldn't.
@@kerendn if you can scratch the glass with paper then i don't think there's any viable option for you
@@JamesJulier-Artist please make a video when you try it. It's difficult to imagine how it will look
Can you show as how you do it, in a video?
Ive come to find that just the screen protector on the ipad and no tip protectant on the Apple Pencil is just fine and instead of spending that money on the apple pencil tip protector you could use that money to buy a 4 pack of new tips for your Apple Pencil on the apple website/store which ends up being almost the same price on the tip protectors
The feedback for the matte protector is great, but I don't like how it feels to touch and I haaate how it looks. The pentips are my favourite solution so far.
The other good thing about the pentips is that they decrease wear on the actual tip of your pencil.
I use the pentips for pencil sketch style drawing, haven't had a big issue tbh.
That’s great
Hi, thank you so much for this review... I have been wondering what screen protector to get or a tip for the pencil, this really helped my decision thank you
Great review! How long do those tips last? I've used some of the cheaper ones and some of them fall apart within a matter of days
Thanks!!! :)
I have tried these tips. I didn’t want to go for something that would lower the quality so I discarded the thoughts of the screen protector but now I’m coming to it. It’s okay for a while but at the end of the day it’s rubber and it does bend and loose it’s shape quite a bit. One of the things I also noticed that it doesn’t really give me much fluidity…?? If you’re into the whole experience I can tell you that it’s not really going to be satisfying at all. And I honestly just put them away because I’d rather have the sound of pencil on glass than put up with it’s draggy-ness.
But it’s all to each their own at the end of the day.
I was thinking of getting something like this! I currently have a paper like screen protector but I keep wearing down my tips too quickly
Definitely worth a try!
Usualy how often do you change your tip and how many hours each day you use it?
Paperlike is overrated and sucks
@@fistedarnes3640 depends on the brand really but i guess the popular paperlike brand does kinda suck especially when it’s overpriced
i used a paper feel screen protector and one new tip Totally wear in only One illustration of 3 or 4 hours...
Hi, do you reccomend usin a matte screen protector + the tips or do you think it is just a either one situation? Thank you in advance!
I don't mind using the Apple Pencil 2 on the bare screen, I like the slippyness. I have never had any problems with the Samsung S Pen on my S7 Tab either. I was always led to believe these things are quite robust.
Any recommendations on screen protectors? I got a new iPad Air and Apple Pencil a few days ago and I'm nervous about damaging the glass with the pencil ... i know officially it doesn't, but as you mentioned, you have lots of fine scratches in it...
Hi! Will the pen tips work on a tempred glass screen protector? Thanks!
I'm about to buy an iPad for drawing, and I think I'll definitely try these. I'm already spending so much on the iPad, spending a bit extra to try out screen protectors and alternate tips to improve my experience definitely seems worth it. I have a heavy hand, so I'm afraid I'll scratch the screen just by the amount of pressure I use. I'd like to try the base pen tip on the bare screen, but I'm sure I'd do some damage...
If you use procreate I'd recommend adjusting the pressure curve
Hi... are the cheaper tips you got made of rubber or pvc instead of silicone? I got some dux ducis silicone tips and they seem to work well, but considering getting the pen tips after seeing this video.
Thank you somuch
Wow thank you
My pleasure
Very informative and well explained decided to stay with screen protector and the swearing involved while avoiding wrinkles and air pockets
Yeah both solutions come with their own problems lol
I got the ipad pro a week ago and I'm really struggling with sketching and line work because of how slippy it is. I have naturally shake hands and it's never effected me drawing on paper but it has become a real problem when drawing digitally 😂
I’ve heard this is a problem for many yes. This is a possible solution then.
You didn’t need to spend £700-£1000 to draw. You could of just bought some paper and a pencil set for probably £10 quid.😂😂😂
That’s what apple have done to you all. You buy an electronic device then have to get additional accessories likepaper like to simulate drawing on paper. News flash, real paper still exists and it’s dirt cheap. This isn’t Star Trek where you can’t get good old fashion paper and lead pencils anymore.
A real artist will know nothing compares to real paints and a good canvas. This is a gimmick, nothing more. A novelty not a substitute for the real thing. Try turning in some artwork to your teacher, made from the iPad and see how that turns out😂😂😂😂
Apple are taking the piss with so many of you, like with their new £600 dollar leather over the ear head phones😂😂😂. Any audiophile will tell you than sound fidelity can only go so far. Think they pretty much hit that wall with beats, Bose and tech from the other leading brands and they are all cheaper than £600 dollars.
I own a iPad Air 4 and if in a moment of madness I got a 2nd gen pencil I wouldn’t be pretentious or even believe I’m creating true art, I’d acknowledge it for what is, a novelty party toy to use when your fucking board!
@@Loophole23742 each to their own opinion, but I do agree apple is very expensive.
However, done correctly digital art can be more vibrant and more smoother then traditional art can be. Just because it isn't traditional though doesn't mean it's not art. Art is always evolving and digital art is just a new evolution of art, you don't have to like it but if someone is being creative, I believe it does make it art 😊
@@Loophole23742 1) The iPad can be taken anywhere.
2) Digital drawing can earn money.
3) Digital drawing is easier than drawing on paper.
You may not like the price of an iPad as much as you like, but for people who earn money by drawing and want a convenient and portable device for drawing, this is a good purchase.
@@Loophole23742 I don’t think when people buy an iPad they use it for other stuff too not only for drawing. I want to buy a new iPad because of 1. More storage, I only have 16 Gb 2. I wanna try drawing on the iPad. 3. Less lag. 4. Gaming. 5. Note taking
Not everyone uses it for drawing. I think that for me the price is out of my budget. But it’s still good if you like a good quality iPad, and it has all the things you need. Traditional drawing is fun yes. But it’s not like you can paint and erase layers can you?
Thank you for your review. I am having an issue with my Apple Pencil on iPad Pro 2020. I get light but annoying drag in several random places on the screen with Apple Pencil, even after I wet the screen and gently dry it. I tried rubbing skin oil on the screen, but it makes no difference. This experience comes and goes on its own, but as I said it is annoying. Any ideas how to prevent this?
I use paperlike and this tip too. Enjoy it....just they need to upgrade cause easy to break.
Please can u tell me if I should go for the Apple Pencil tip cover for my Apple Pencil 2?
Great video and beautiful artwork! Greatly appreciate your honest (non-sponsored) review. Would you recommend these tips for those who write a lot on the iPad (not just for artists)? Thanks.
I think for handwriting they probably drag a little too much
Thanks!

Oh this was really what I needed. I tried a paperlike in the past, but it didn't work for me because of the grain. And when sketching on the iPad I just needed more grip. So I hope that these tips are maybe the way
Definitely worth a try!
Amazing
Thank you 😊
im considering getting one after having a bad experience with applying a matte screen protector. should i get some?
Hey, great video! Was just wondering if you do any handwritten notes and which you would recommend for writing? I am trying to avoid the matte screen protectors and am open to writing right onto the glass but if the tips work great than i'll grab them.
Hmm I’m not convinced by these for handwriting, but my style is cursive and it wouldn’t work for me.
When you watch the you tubers unboxing and they get the matte screen protector, the rubber pen tip thing and a Apple Pencil cover🤣
Not me
Those were just people who still had no idea what they needed but still wanted extra protection before deciding which one to use. I myself don’t use any screen protector / pen tips cover
I had a matte protector and it just got scratched so I had to take it off might do this thanks !!
Thanks so much, I will consider this. But I would like to ask, what is it like when writing and taking notes as well?
On a bare screen I worry if it could damage the coating. I will try these, but only on a glass screen protector.
What about using Pen Tips AND Paper like together? Would that work or just counterintuitive?
Hi James, I need your advice: I bought a Belkin screen protector and I feel like if my pen slips every time I try to draw straight lines or when it comes to draw faces, my lines have little lumps...and I see this as a solution to my problem ... would you recommend it to me? Thank you
**Update 28/03/2021
I finally ordered my pen tips and, using them with my ipad pro with a screen protector I wasn't able to get that improvement that I was looking for.
