I don't think Seiko prices have really gone up as much as many people seem to think. We have been spoiled by gray market prices that were based on largely JDM retail prices from a decade ago. When Seiko updates their prices due to depreciating currency and cut their number of authorized dealer accounts to stem the flow of watches into the gray market, we see it as Seiko pricing us out.

Recently they have continued to discontinue older models and then re releasing almost the same model for 2x price. (Supposedly upgraded movement) example the seiko alpinist green dial. Was like 450 now 750.
However, the stuff they releasing now are priced more appropriately for what they offer compared to competitors.
Before you would be able to get a seiko for an absolute bargain priced 50-75% that of their competitors. They still offer great value, but now micro brands and Orient, casio hold the best value proposition under $500.
Imo this is a good move for the brand as they attempt to position as a more luxury brand (entry level). They have amazing offerings under 1500, however once you get above 2000 oris, sinn, tudor, have great offerings. Back above 5000-10000, grand seiko begins to become a great value prop.
Theres also spring drive movements below 4000, on certain seikos which is again amazing value prop.
So now you really need to do research and look around for amazing deals for seikos instead of before where almost any watch from them you picked would be amazing value.

I bought the SARX055. It is a beautiful watch. It has since become my daily wear. I can't imagine a better watch at any price point. It's beautiful and well made, elegant, yet so versatile. I can wear it to a formal event, or to the supermarket, and doesn't look out of place.

Yes I have a SARX055 too. I am considering selling it. WTF? Well my car was stolen and the insurance does not cut it. My way of looking at the 'baby snowflake' is this: It could be the perfect watch but for one minor defect. The low tick rate; if it was 8Hz then that would be ideal. I wear my 055 quite a lot as I am a 'wrist guy'. I work with a lot of documents and I play a lot of cards. In these "critical" situations I shift between my SARX, my GS, and my Wise Adamascus.

I just got mine. The only thing I was missing in my collection was a dressy everyday watch. I was open towards all price levels, looking at the SARB033/35, Grand Seiko Snowflake, Mido Multifort, Tissot Powermatic 80, Omega Aqua Terra, Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39. And then I came across your video. And my gosh am I happy I did. I concur the quality of the watch is a cut above the SARB and all midtier Swiss watches. It’s similar to my Planet Ocean, seriously. The finishing is very close to Zaratsu from GS and Astron. The movement is not the greatest (non chronometer, mine seems -10s/d) but everything else is amazing. Thanks again for your video!

The SARX077 is next on my watch wish list. I am a real junkie for the Presage watch dials. Got a Negroni a few months back and the subtle changes to the color in different light levels (or angles) is just beautiful. Now, for those that think the SARX077 is "expensive", it's kind of in the middle. There are the beautiful Presages with the Arita Porcelain dials ($1700-$2200), the Urishi lacquer Presages (as I remember, the $2000-$3000 range). But you want to see expensive, look up the Presage Spring Drive Models, hovering in the $4000 range. That rate might get you into the Grand Seiko Quartz lower end models, but Spring Drive automatic, the cheapest I found started is in $6000+ range. From what I've read, some of the GS features and finishes are being shared with the Presage line, which makes for some nice lower end luxury watches. Seiko, keep up the great work!

I was weighing up buying in the blue and kept putting it off, but after seeing this video at the 25 min and the way it caught and reflected the light, I bought one straight away. When the box turned the wife rolled her eyes with “not another Seiko”, once she saw the dial all was forgiven. It’s a brilliant and well worth it’s value, Seiko has progressed and this better than a SARB.

I purchased this one for daily use. Because of its intriguing dial, great finishing, fit and sharp looks. However, the greatest advantage is legibility. The cocktail time series suffers from serious legibility problems, reason for me to sell it... So now I have this perfect daily wearer. Not yet as sharp as my Snowflake (they'll make sure it never will) but it's getting a bit closer. So yes, the price is justified for me... Nice review.

In the UK I have seen Sarb 033's sell for around £600 used. People must be mad to spend that money on a second hand Sarb. I had one it was a nice watch for around £300/£350 but it didn't come close to these new sharp edged Seikos! They are closer to Grand Seiko designs than they are to the Sarb. That is one nice looking watch the dial and bracelet look amazing. People who say the Sarb is like a Grand Seiko in quality have obviously never owned a GS.

That...well, hands down-have never seen a go/wear, every where watch, not just a formal watch, but a durable watch, not just a watch that you can wash your hands in, but a casual wear, do everything even in the water that you like, as long as you can do it without tanks, then out to an evening formal event with no need to change watches, watch. Anything/Anywhere, Every day/Any day wear watch that has this grade level of complete package at this price point-along with a seriously unique awesome combination of quality, new trick dial, and overall high quality fit and finish...well, I've been a watch enthusiast since a kid and this watch is the likes of which I have never seen before overall in one piece ever, period; oh, and the price, in one word I'd say, at least for all I've personally ever seen, this watch is Unique, a breakthrough in development at any price...;and, Rrooosseebbuuudd🙏😄

Great watch. I think the best seiko I have seen for my purposes. I think it is the best 1000 dollars watch and the best watch for me right now, keeping in mind everything you said. In addition, the best blue dial by far for this price and I agree that this color is the definitive for this collection and much more purposeful than the white one.
Maybe the only competition for me at the moment is Mido multifort chronometer, both blue and white dials - 80 hours, dau and date, silicone, COSC, screw-down crown, decorated movement. However, I still lean towards this blue sharp edge - just love the case and the dial more and is 39.3 vs 42 mm and has dia shield and is cleaner and simpler. Just the perfect balance of form and function, sophistication and simplicity 🙂👌

Good video, I just wanna say that in my experience the 6R35 does give 20 more hours of power reserve but suffers from accuracy and synchronism much so more than my favorite 6R15 which I do love a bit more. I own several watches with the 6R15 like modern reissue 1968 blue hole, twilight blue, green gilt and the 65 version all have the 6R15 and all are extremely accurate, I’m talking 2-5 seconds a day on my wrist well within Seiko own specs! Now my new 65 55th anniversary SPB143, 149 X2 and a dress watch with the 6R35 all gain way to much and yes they have settled in. In addition the 6R35 suffers more so from synchronism which all mechanical watches suffer but on the modern 6R is not great, it can gain or lose greatly depending on how you place the watch crown up, down on the wrist etc. those 20 more hours came at an expense of accuracy. I actually return one spb149 because it was gaining 30-35 seconds a day not good at all, I own tons of Seiko watches including the sla037, 039 and just paid in full fir the SLA043 coming in December, can’t wait fir that one. My point is I do love Seiko as a watch company, brand across the entire lineup but I feel that the escape, met and balance needs to be better tweaked to accommodate the new bigger mainspring barrel design. Please read more online about accuracy, precision and synchronism to better understand the difference between and how in effects your watches performance. At the end of the day I would be bothered by spending for example say 2 K on a watch that’s gains 25 seconds a day. My GS SBGE211 gains 1-2 a day which is to be expected for the coin I paid. Please let me know if your 6R35 is super accurate +/- whatever seconds. Thanks.

Roseeeebudddd. Definitely a little long on the video, but this model fascinated me. I was on the cusp of getting a cocktail time when this model was released. You are correct that everything collectors have been asking for has been added to this watch. Smaller case size, thinner, longer power reserve, better bracelet, more hidden date wheel. Some changes don’t require any increase in price, but most of those do. Biggest comment to you is to remember to mention your wrist size. Helps give us perspective. Also, it seems from looking around that the Presage line holds their value better than others. Can you comment on that? I know a lot of people say don’t worry about value retention, but I just don’t agree with that philosophy. Watch collecting is a lot more fun when you’re not losing value.

Beautiful watch and good value. The bracelet also has 2 half links so along with the micro adjust a good bracelet fit is possible. However when I tried the white one on it sat a bit too high on my skinny wrist, not a major deal breaker but enough to stop me buying it there and then.

To your point. I have owned both the SARB033 and SARB035. Both really good watches at $400 to $450. Now... the Sharp Edges are original, better dial work and detail, better movement, better bracelet and finishing. Those things add up to about $400 to $450 in my book. So...$900 is a good price.

I think that is the biggest problem with Seiko: There isn't a good intermediate level movement between the entry level 4R and the GS hi-beats. I know the 6R is supposed to fill that spot, but the difference between it and the 4R is simply not enough, with the only noticeable change being the power reserve. Would love to see the 6R having a 28800 beat rate.

I'm surprised you haven't sourced a normal 6r15 signed crown and popped it in the SARX045 yet, if the cabochon is that out of place on it.
At least it sort of matches the dial, that was the one main faux pas with the SDGM001, that watch would be perfect if they left the AUTOMATIC font off the dial and just used a signed crown.

@BackdriftNightfall For all you care is stupid business sense for a company though don't you think. Those whiners often make up a core of the fan base and can help sustain companies in times of duress. If you want a current great example of what I'm talking about look no further than comics trying to appeal to the movie fans while alienating long time readers, you can't have that for long term success. Regardless of how you feel about long island watches, I stand by the fact that they exist because Seiko didnt recognize the market was ripe. And Seiko exist as the powerhouse it is today because people like cheap stuff, or have you forgotten about the quartz crisis already?

Nice review. This watch and the new Sharp Edge line are real lookers. The dial is the main show, but the lugs look quite attractive. Love the angles. Reminds a bit of the Sinn 104 lugs a bit, but a bit more sleeker. Which reminds me I like the lugs on the Transocean, very angular. If I were to compare lugs to front of a car, the Transocean is more like a Lamborghini Aventador, and this Sharp Edge is more like a Lamborghini Countach.. is that a good comparison? IDK? Just what came to mind when looking at these lugs and thinking about the Transocean ones.. but, I digress...

Its three times the price of the sarb but third of the carrera calibre 5. I don't think Seiko is just competing with itself. I own the new grey ceramic version and I wear it more than all my other watches. One caveat on the HC, the crown guards, they’re obnoxious. Luckily it has a 64 hour power reserve so you don’t have to mess with it too often (with a smaller watch rotation).
