Very broad feet, but have a terrible arthritic ankle (bad fracture many years ago). On the Camino Frances right now, just over half way, currently in Leon. Have used Lowa Z-8 goretex, have been absolutely PERFECT for me. Waterproof, excellent support and wonderful traction in all terrain. Every second peregrino tells me they are too heavy, I should have Altras or Hokas like 99% of peregrinos. However not one single blister or quality issue (unlike the trail runner users). My Lowas are PERFECT for me. Use what works for YOU & don’t listen to others - it’s your body & your Camino. The other trick Ricky didn’t mention - DO NOT FOLLOW THE DISTANCE SHOWN IN THE GUIDE BOOKS. Walk what suits YOU. Many pilgrims we meet are on their 2nd Camino because they went too hard & hurt themselves.

For me, on our 2019 Portuguese Camino, my Salomon X Ultra (Goretex. Low.) were fabulous. I also carried my beloved (and admittedly heavy) Chacos sandals. The Chacos were primarily for evenings but I did walk some in the them for a break. No blisters! I also used Ininji toe socks and Darn Tough Light hiker socks. My wife, wasn’t so fortunate and her feet were a mess when we got to Santiago.

Comment for the YT algorithm! I haven't done the Camino (Portuguese & Norte routes are on the bucket list) but my shoes for hiking mountains are Merrell low cut trek shoes w/ Goretex (I think they're Merrell Moab). I also use trek sandals (w/ or w/o socks, it depends) when I know that the trail involves crossing some streams or rivers. When I do the Camino, I'll also bring trek sandals instead of flip flops. Buen camino to everyone! 👍🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Sadly, I’ve put my completely flat Donald Duck feet into almost every hiking shoe and boot commercially available… no bueno.. until a friend suggested a light, Canadian made combat boot - the Danner TFX 8. Waterproof, light and extremely breathable. As a fat bloke, hiking while considering ankle support while maintaining lower limb mobility I cannot recommend this particular boot if you have literally no arch. Just get the “ee” wide if you’re purchasing and go half a shoe size up.
Am planning and training for my first Camino (Frances) wearing this, while bringing a backup set with me just in case (burdensome, I know), but I have been in remote situations where footwear failed me badly.
Keep up the content guys this is some inspiring stuff, I’m going to be coming over all the way from New Zealand!

I just finished the Portuguese Camino on Friday, with about 3 days on the coast and then the central, starting in Porto.
As always, wore my Meindl Goretex boots. The cobblestones of Portugal will kill your feet if you don't have a thicker sole. Lots of gravel on the trails and there was a lot of mud and water to tramp through. No wet feet. There is a lot of asphalt on this route and old Roman roads. Meindl are very high quality boots (and shoes) and will last me a few 1000 km every year.

@frankfurt - thnx for your info. If ever I do the Portugues route (which is on the bucket list), I'll use shoes with thick sole. A couple that I know have just finished the Portuguese route (littoral). They used Altra trail runners & were happy with their choice. Cheers & congrats on finishing another camino!

Here my experiences and how it went (completely non-judgemental):
Did my first long hike with mid-rise boots from Lowa (Goretex): no blisters, but too warm and sweaty (i got an heat eczema). Then walked the Camino Frances with approach shoes from LaSportiva: wide toebox ++, no blisters++ 😀, sole too rigid and heavy --, too warm on sunny days bc of Goretex --, I got issues with my achilles tendon on the way to Fisterra.
Camino del Norte and Camino Primitivo with a trail running shoe from Arch'teryx: toebox not so wide, caused a little blister on my pinky toe at the beginning of the hike -, too warm bc of Goretex --, lightweight and flexible sole with a really good grip ++ ♥.
I also walked a 350 km trail with Altra Lone Peaks but I got issues with my heels because they don't provide much cushioning 😞. But the wide toebox and no Goretex was just perfect. No blisters ♥.
Another trail with hiking shoes from Hoka, they were super nice in the store where I bought them, but became a nightmare on the trail 😱. Blisters, foot and ankle pain, epic fail ☹.
This year I'm going to walk the Via Francigena from Lausanne to Rome and decided to walk with Altra Timp 4.0: wide toebox, no Goretex, more cushioning for my heels, leightweight and flexible with a good grip. Hopefully all the pro's without the con's.
Wish me luck and buen camino to everyone.

Thank you and greetings from Sydney, Australia - so useful. I have never found shoes to fit properly- my feet being v small and v wide - so I resort to much larger leather walking boots (Bergamo etc). Most shoe boxes sizes are limited but the uppers are adapted. Good quality socks are vital. Did you mention ankle support? I like the ankle support (more waterproof/ leech proof qualities). The big problem is leather boots are bulky and don’t fit into my tiny backpack (I’m aiming to carry less than 7 kilos- still struggling to sort out a light weight waterproof jacket- ponchos are useless in my experience) …. Any suggestions regarding waterproof jackets !??? From torrentially wet Sydney heading to the Camino Portuguese in June

Currently on the Camino Frances and near O Cebreiro. I took my hoka speedgoat 5's and in case it rains waterproof socks (from the brand sealskin). Luckily it has rained only 2 days so far. But those 2 days my feet stayed dry! If it is colder I can imagine that they could be paired with a sock liner for extra warmth. :)❤

The one thing most people don't talk about is how much gravel path and roads there are. I think many people believe the Camino to be mountains and woodland but it isn't, the majority of it is pretty boring walking alongside busy roads and the traffic noise. It's not a through hike, it's a pilgrimage. Also, it's extremely busy and often noisy from other pilgrims so it's not a place to find peace and quiet 🤣. But having the correct boots/shoes is essential and not carrying too much gear, like I did. When I do it again, I will wear Brooks trail shoes, the best I've ever worn.

After many trials and error, these are my shoes of choice that I use for different terrains and circumstances, and that fits my wide flat feet perfectly. New Balance Hierro v7, La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II Wide, La Sportiva Tx4 (more for mineral mountain terrains). Get rid of the original insoles and replace them with custom made insoles was my best spending. I only use Gore Tex in winter time with mid height shoes of the same models. I take water proof socks with me if I expect rain in the three seasons. But the ultimate comfort for your feet and is to carry a light weight backpack. Get rid of all the what ifs and in case of. If I had to do my 2300 km Camino from Switzerland I will wear the New Balance Hierro and will take the lightweight Tactical XIII cart that I could roll 90% of the time preserving my body even more

Sorry for the late answer, the message got swallowed by the system! The hip stretches are one of the good exercises, as when we walk we tend to tighten them soooo much! We don’t have an exact video about stretching as we leave it to professionals so we. Recommend a UA-cam channel called “Bob and Brad” they are physiotherapists and they are also funny! Hugs

Moisture can contribute to blisters it doesn't automatically mean they will develop. One thing is to know your own feet, are you prone to blisters if so what conditions make them worse. How do your feet normally feel when walking in wet conditions, this helps guide your decisions. Also you can stop and change socks when they get too wet which can help. Waterproof shoes can lead to moisture build up anyway as they are not very breathable.

    • @kitty_s23456

@Yo1972 - some people also bring trek sandals (like Teva, etc) instead of flip flops. Some use the sandals alternately with their trek shoes or on days when the trek shoes are still wet. If it's not raining the day after the rain (and your shoes are still wet), you can tie your shoes on the exterior of your backpack so that they'll dry during your walk. Some also use socks with their sandals to prevent blisters. Not a great fashion statement, but who cares, eh? 😊
