    It's amazing to see how with most commuters stuck at home due to corona, with many streets being car free, just how many people have chosen to cycle to places.
    It really shows that people really do want to cycle, given the right conditions.

    The Netherlands is cycling Heaven, and not to many misserable people on bicycles either, almost all cycle with a smile on there faces,and the school children cycle to school instead of being driven, or they get the Bus. What a great place to be on a Bicycle.

    Miss Bambrick, I as a Dutch person, I feel a little hurt. The Netherlands is also a bike Heaven...😭😭
    Side note... I never owned a car (do have a driver's licence) and can't remember how many bikes I had. But I own 4 bikes at this moment. 1 city bike (grandpa style) 1 all terrain bike and 2 folding bikes..
    And the helmet is not necessary when you protect the cyclist in other ways, likely law...
    Loved the talk of course. And I am happy to show you around the Netherlands on 1 of my bikes....😉🥰

    1h of commuting burns 500 kcal btw.
    1h of training burns 700-900 kcal
    1h of driving a car burns $10 in gas.

    Making a city bike friendly is obviously a life quality perk. Maybe having a bike friendly city attracts a healthier crowd of people to your city? That's going to have a positive economic and creative impact. People follow the amenities they seek.

    • @johanwittens7712
      @johanwittens7712 3 роки тому +2

      It's both. A bike friendly city attracts only slightly more healthy people.
      But the biggest impact is that the existing population becomes healthier because they get more exercise, kids grow up healthier, etc. Kids become more self sufficient and independent much earlier because they van go places by themselves. There's less noise and air pollution increasing health, there's more space for public space , recreation and greenery, again reducing stress, increasing air quality, and increasing health. Streets are safer, traffic is calmer, reducing even car accidents. And so on.
      And then there's much cheaper construction cost and minimal maintenance costs. There's a bike path near where I live that carries 3000 to sometimes 5000 bikes every day. It's now over 20 years old and has never needed maintenance.
      Many studies, mostly from the Netherlands and other bike friendly countries, have shown that every euro invested in bike infra actually ends up creating a net return for society/government and thus tax payers, of up to 8 euro due to all these positive feedback loops.

    Bicycles make people themselves more vulnerable, true, but they also make you far less likely to kill someone else, which is itself a kind of vulnerability. Between the choice of potentially getting hit and injured or killed or hitting someone else and potentially injuring or killing them and having to deal with all the lawsuits and guilt that would follow for the rest of your life, I'd rather choose the former.

    Unfortunately my country is not bike friendly. And in my city kolkata banned bicycle by traffic police on almost every important roads. Cyclists have to pay fine if they use those roads. :( It's sad that this s the main reason that many people do not cycling to work but they want to. However i use bicycle for my commute every single day. And i love to. Its quite adventurous in my own city because, we cyclist do not get enough room for us on road. Rather motorbikers or car drivers try to dominate us.

Very intellectual and cultural city. But I missed the bicycles so much there. Kolkata could really become a much more liveable city if they started to think bikes in to the local infrastructure.

    • @ruudpoutsma5273
      @ruudpoutsma5273 5 років тому +2

      It's not very comfortable. We learn cycling from age of several months (yes), we're on public road cycling when we're 2-3 years old. Because we start early, we're all just very good cyclers who also know how to fall (and prevent head injury). In general, only speed cyclers or toddlers will use a helmet as they are too unexperienced are go much faster.
      On a grander scale, it's less safe. people will go by bike less (when helmets are mandatory meaning more pollution, car rides, et cetera. there's actual research for this as well as statistics (look up New Zealand).

    • @mattr372
      @mattr372 5 років тому +2

      Your helmet will save your life if your head hits into a windshield. If you hit another bike at slower speeds your probably going to scrape your hands. If cars are virtually out of the equation the helmet is less important.

    It's amazing what you can haul with a bike ... With a car you can haul 150 times more. Heck you can even buy groceries for a month instead of just a few days. And I love this lady calling this progress... as if it was.....

    • @MrMezmerized
      @MrMezmerized 3 роки тому +2

      As for the elderly. For just about any occasion here, an electric bike is better for them than a car. Faster, and they get exercise.

    • @ElToro36
      @ElToro36 2 роки тому

      Bike infrastructure includes safe parking and short-term storage. Urban and suburban businesses know what the economic studies show: an investment in bicycle parking yields more than three times what car parking does, in revenue per sq. meter. Plus, any police officer will tell you bike theft is a crime of opportunity. Safe parking facilities take away that opportunity. This makes municipal governments happy because their police are freed up to pursue other criminal activities (like car theft, domestic violence, etc.).
