I am 29 and live in Germany. Commuting to work, shopping, visiting friends: always by bike. I never had a car and I don't want one. Do you have any idea how much money, stress and time I save every day?
Same here, living in Frankfurt. Doing everything by bike. But once a week I drive my car, bringing my family to the swimming pool. This is SO stressful. But it cures me from wanting to drive more in my car. Bike = happy, car = aggressive.
Bicycling in Puerto Rico has been growing so fast that now almost all of the 78 municipalities have bicycle trails. That's the best way to encourage the "sport", but we are still have one of the highest density of cars per square mile in the world.
Hey, Jacob! I appreciate your adventurous spirit, your love of cycling, and your contribution to China. I am an avid cyclist who has been to China 17 times (including some visits to Chengdu). My first visits were in 2000. I, too, have seen the Chinese sacrifice bicycles on the altar of modernization and progress. Seeing fewer and fewer cyclists on my trips over the past 17 years truly saddens me. > And, you did a great job with this presentation. Ride on!
i quit riding my bike a year later i had pneumonia then the doctor told me i would now have copd for the rest of my life and would always ALWAYS need an inhaler but 2 years ago when i started riding my bike again i stopped carrying my inhaler and a year ago i was free of the copd today i ride everywhere i don't own a car and i haven't been sick in 2 years not a cold or the flu and i don't take the yearly flu shot
Dude I hate to tell you this but you didn't have COPD.. That is the fancy name for emphysema and it does not go away. You really need to get yourself a new doctor.
Didn't learn to drive until I was in my early forties. Still rode for a year of two but a change of job meant I needed to drive to get to work. Consequeently gained about 2 stones in weight. Now, 15 years after pretty much stopping I borrowed my sons bike over the summer holidays. In six weeks, riding 10 miles or so three times a week I feel unbelieveable. I'm going to have to figure out how to keep it going in my spare time once I'm back at work. Which will be next week. I too believe that they should be on prescription. Nothing, but nothing lifts my spirit quite like a ride around the canal network where I live...Leek, Staffordshire. Bikes are without doubt the most effective means of transportation and exercise.... Feel like I've re acquainted myself with an old old friend......
Great to read your story there are people out there at the moment trying to get the government to give people bikes for free another point to note is I'm disabled and still ride so people with disabilitys should get gov help too and not written off because of med conditions me thinks .
bicycle riders are just important as bikers so i feel every city should have bike lanes.the money spent on making new cars every year and making them faster and higher in price some of that money can be spent on bicycle lanes in every city or local town.
Biking is by far the best mode of tranportation. It is convenient fun and cheap. It utilizes the freedom of a car wihout all the costs associated to it. And you don't need to wait for a crowded bus.
I started cycling to work at least 4 days a week 16-20 miles a day depending how many miles you want to put in that day. I love it, and enjoy my commute. It's become a competitive thing for me now. I use an app call Strava, that's addicting you become very competitive. This is beneficial since now I'm training to do my first triathlon. I don't think it helped loose weight, but has helped me with endurance and speed. I used hit the gym 6 days a week, now since I started cycling I have probably been to the gym 7 days a month. I love cycling it's the best decision my husband made for my bday, my road bike.
I have cycled to work nearly every day for the last 18 years...maybe people think I’m strange since most people drive in UK, but I actually enjoy going to work by bike. I feel great and save money. Sadly my office is soon moving 50 km further away, so I’ll be forced to drive most of the time, but still thinking of cycling in the summer...just need to allow 2.5 hrs each way! Haha...
It’s a shame that attitudes towards cyclists in the UK is bad. There is a lack of infrastructure outside of cities. Most importantly the amount of dangerous drivers puts people off from cycling.
S1lent Toad , there are roads all over Britain that are perfectly serviceable for use by bicycles. As a cyclist for over 55 years, I've commuted, cycle-camped and picked up the groceries all over Britain including Glasgow, rural communities in the North of England, and London, on the roads already there. Ride confidently and competently on the road. I'm not saying you won't get hit by someone scrolling through their playlist, but that shouldn't keep you off the roads.
Daniel Soriano hey, ik this is ten months old but I'll still reply. Is it possible to reroute your trip to make it longer? Go online and find a route planner map and look for a way, I'm sure there is.
I have a Jeep and two bikes. I'm all for creating bike friendly communities. This is a needed amenity. It attracts the outdoorsy crowd that appreciates natural surroundings. A bike makes getting from point a to b far more fun. More greenways, more trails, yes. I can still justify keeping my Jeep. But I hate clogged traffic jams! With my bike I can go faster than gridlocked cars. So nice to do that .
Cars are actually insanely cheap now because there are just an infinite supply of them now. So much car waste, you can find cars that still run just fine 15 years old at auctions for 1k.
No, 1000 bucks is a lot of money, and to then buy fuel and insurance as well as maintain it makes it anything but cheap. No contest between bicycles and cars in terms of finance.
you used to be able to get a car for about $200. it may not have looked pretty but it worked. now you may be able to find one round 800 but it will need repairs that will cost you at least a few hundred more. then tack on your license plate, sticker, insurance, gas, oil, general maintenance and so on. cars are way expensive.
My commute to work was 15 minutes by car or 25 on the bike. So for only an extra 10 minutes each way, I got to incorporate exercise into my day and not take an hour after work, away from my family, to go run etc. Now my commute is a bit closer, 15-18 minutes on the bike or about 15 by car (heavier traffic so slower average speed by car, compared to cruising in the bike lane and only stopping at the red lights.) I am also lucky enough to have a shower and lockers at my workplace.
Most of my phD friends ride their bikes to work IF they dont have to go another distant place for a meeting etc. They love it. And when they get to work they walk on a treadmill as sitting all day has been shown to be as harmful as smoking 2 cigarettes a day.
Jacob Klink. Thank you for one the most excellent rational explanations towards the explaining to the layperson the benefits of riding a bicycle. I lived in China too and in living there I saw the sense of community which is null and void but getting better here in the US.
biking is so much fun, it relieves stress, not creates it and keeps you in shape. Plus it's way cheaper than a car. (and faster if you're in a town and have less than a mile to go because of parking)
I live in the suburbs so everywhere I bike is about 3-4 miles away. Get a good bit of exercise that way and it’s always fun practicing wheelies on the way over to work
Mad respect to a veteran cyclist. I worked in a shop in Albuquerque, Two Wheel Drive, and a big part of what we did was supply trikes and recumbents for bike lifers with back/neck/motor control issues. It's a beautiful thing to keep riding despite the added difficulty!
Good to see people spreading this massage! I have and will never understand why people choose to sitt i crowded busses, metro's or other publics transports, when you can have a bike take you from door to door. Is riding a bike just not cool enough? There are some exceptions doe, like injuries and health problems, then i understand why you don't use a bicycle. I consider myself REALLY lucky being able to say that i enjoy my commute to work/university/others, it just makes life so much more fun! :D :D Pretty sure people in a crowded bus can say the same..

@@Jake.03-g3k Yes, for long distance a car makes sense. I was more referrig to people commuting more short distance that choose e.g., a bus instead of a bike. Do you have an electric bike? Or have you considered get one? They make riding a LOT more pleasant for normal commuting. You still have do deal with weather, but hills and days you dont really feel like getting warm/sweaty is you not a problem anymore. And yes, you still get the health benefits. But a proper electric bike (crank motor) will cost a bit. I LOVE my EMTB and highly recommend trying electric.
great video! get the message out for people to make an proactive approach to the world and their own health. Your health is in your own bicycle. thanks
I have been a regular cyclist for over 60 years. Sure, I have a car I use once or twice a week and I use trains too, but a bike is part of me, I cycle most days.
I love my car but I also love my bike. Did the park and ride in 9 miles each way today but then we're spoiled because we get paid to do so in bike commuter credits, private showers and indoor bike parking. Bikes and cars can coexist if we watch out for each other.
Very nice video. The video I have been looking for my friends and family. They don’t seem to understand why I ride my bike 4 days per week 8 miles each ways. Its better than a car. More exercise. And I love it!
I used to ride about a hundred and twenty miles a week. I quit riding about 4 years ago. I just got back on bike, and now I can do 43. And it's only been two weeks. I am 56 years old. I will never leave my bike again. Life is too sad without it. UPDATE: A month later I am now up to over 75 a week.
My bicycle has helped me Get off of pain meds for a broken back. I have arthritis and multiple other issues, I live pretty much pain-free with diet meditation and lots and lots of bike rides.
You can always tell a bike rider: when they are driving, they slow down, give you a wide berth, and cede the right of way. The non-bike riders come close to you, don’t slow down, assume the right of way, and usually make rude gestures at your existence.
They're starting to become popular around me, my city has a couple million people but it's spread over a gigantic area. I like my road bike for commuting, but even the average person on an ebike could do from my place to the city in roughly 30 mins, about 13km along the bikeway next to the highway. Comparable to driving, when you include traffic and parking. I'm often going faster than the traffic on the highway into the city in the morning.
E bikes to me are just cheaper motorcycles. You don’t really do any exercise which is kind of not the point of bicycles. I know people will go against me but it’s just how I feel about e bikes.
I would love to bike to work but the only way to work from where I live is along a highway where cars (including me) drive way too fast. besides that I ride everyday when I get out of work..whoo! :)
After I got my electric bike I don't bother with the car as much unless I have passengers/stuff to pick up or the weather is terrible or it's more than about 30 miles.
if cities implement a high parking cost in certain areas, it would decrease car use and increase bike use. cars have hidden costs for everyone, such as city money used for maintaining the roads, the ridiculous amount of space cars take up just sitting there, and the danger to pedestrians.
Prague, Czech Republic - A couple of months ago (around 03/2018) the city council decided to limit bikes in the centre due to the amount of tourists and pedestrians. So they're going the opposite direction :(
I use a folding bike to work and experienced quite a handful of near misses, danger from thugs and bullying from all kinds of motorists, as if they own the road. To make matters worse, biking infrastructure in the Philippines (Manila) is almost 0. Bike lanes are just an afterthought and roads have gazillion of potholes. And people think that I'm a cheapskate. But why do I ride? Ecological, economic, health (physical/mental) and I-value-time reasons. At the end of the day, I can go home quicker, be productive and do other things aside from being stuck in traffic.
Watch this video with captions on. Every time Jacob speaks in Chinese UA-cam captions thinks it’s English and just displays what it thinks Jacob is saying..... it’s hilarious!!! But don’t let this distract you from a very good and pointed presentation.
The language difference makes the audience didn't act like in an English speaking country. But they understand the speaker because the translation is on both sides of the screen.
The audience are Chinese. In their culture its considered rude to make any noise during a presentation or a speech. An American professor was puzzled because no student asked him any question during an entire presentation and later he learnt that its considered rude to ask a question during a presentation in chinese culture. So its a form of discipline.
+Bill Patel exactly! In China, the classes normally pretty quiet, the only way to ask a question is to raise your hand and stand up (at least in High School, idk it will be a difference in College). In middle school and high school, or primary school, some teacher will even punish the student because they did not raise their hand to ask a question(did not raise the hand to ask is considering rude)
I own a Italian sports car which is very temperamental. I had to fix the constant velocity joints, locking brakes, shift linkage broke and now somekind of wire problem that does not allow me to start with the key. So I have been riding my bike to work 10 miles away. it takes me 50 minutes. And since I have a desk job this means that I get exercise that may be preventing diseases. Humans are not design for inactivity, they need to move and bicycles are just perfect to get exercise. People at work ask me why i dont drive? Get a car they tell me. I tell them that my bike cost more than their car. That leaves them thinking
Cycling is great in many ways, and has changed my life, but please don't forget the disabled, people with pets (can't manage 3 dogs on my bike ), grocery shopping, each mode of transporation has it's place, some things you still need a vehicle for. There are times when I still really need my car.
Disabled on electric wheelchairs or small electric cars. Pets, children and smaller amount of groceries on your bike, ebike or on a cargo bike. Rent a car or use car share for bigger stuff or longer distances. All of this is thought about and handled in cities like Amsterdam. Watch channel like Not Just Bikes, a Canadian living in Amsterdam, if you want more insight. A brilliant channel.
i own 3 cars i dont use them sometimes my friends do or when i go out of state but even then i bike all the time when i can bike 500 miles in 2 day with breaks and all i will be happy right now im at 120 a week .so yeah
I ride 40 miles into the woods round trip because I don't drive. It takes me about 4 hrs round trip to complete 40 miles on my trek bike. I'm using aerobars that cost me $20 and the bike itself is $500 but entry level higher tier bike. If you have a bike I encourage you to spend a bit more and get a good road bike that can making commuting long distances easy on the. Body.
I ride my road bike 10 miles a day. I'm for what this guy is saying. Its a form of exercise that don't feel like exercise. I have never understood spinners indoors. About China, however, its not only cycling=poor now, its cycling=breathing polution. We go to Beijing and Shanghai 3-4 times a year, hardly ever see a blue sky. I've been in Beijing numerous times and I turn on my iPhone and I'm reading a warning for the day for people with health or breathing problems to stay indoors if possible.
The Austrian philosopher Ivan Illich, a critic of the modern society habits, was one of the first thinkers to establish the so-called consumer speed concept. He wrote in his book Energy and Equity published in 1974: "The model American male devotes more than 1600 hours a year to his car. He sits in it while it goes and while it stands idling. He parks it and searches for it. He earns the money to put down on it and to meet the monthly installments. He works to pay for gasoline, tolls, insurance, taxes, and tickets. He spends four of his sixteen waking hours on the road or gathering his resources for it. And this figure does not take into account the time consumed by other activities dictated by transport: time spent in hospitals, traffic courts, and garages; time spent watching automobile commercials or attending consumer education meetings to improve the quality of the next buy. The model American puts in 1600 hours to get 7500 miles: less than five miles per hour [the consumer speed]."
Alex Decampos nope, he actually stated that he is not going to make millions with a bike store, but he is doing for something that he actually loves, instead for money per se.光追钱不会把你靠近梦想,不觉得呢?
I wish I didn’t feel the need to buy a car before realizing I’m so much happier without it. Cars are overrated. Please understand this BEFORE buying one. Invest in a hella dope bike.
Also yes now I can show this to my parents to convince them to allow me to buy another bike I'm thinking of buying a we the people arcade or justice what do u guys think I should buy?
I like bikes too but when I got on the R6 and rode it, it's far better. Bicycles are better when you want to ride places where you cannot on a motorcycle. It beats walking.
Use a car for driving long distance and comfortable but it is expensive, you pay for gas insurance and maintenance. Use bike for exercise, healthy and lose your weight and cheaper ( little maintenance only). The both needs safety and safety of driving a car or riding a bike. Car needs license, but the bike not. Most people thought that the rider of the bike is for poor people only and they think the riding of the bike never concern about the time management, will reach too late but healthy and waste time for the world changing every minute.

I started commuting by bike since... 10 years ago. Changed my life. Best thing I could have ever done! Enjoy your new life. I know you will.
Thx Guys for the optimism but Its getting harder to bring enough stuff with me in my bike. I Still commute on it over short distances (less than 5km) I hope my city keeps investing in more bike lanes so everyone can bike safer
have you considered a bicycle trailer?
I am 29 and live in Germany. Commuting to work, shopping, visiting friends: always by bike. I never had a car and I don't want one.
Do you have any idea how much money, stress and time I save every day?
Same here, living in Frankfurt. Doing everything by bike. But once a week I drive my car, bringing my family to the swimming pool. This is SO stressful. But it cures me from wanting to drive more in my car. Bike = happy, car = aggressive.

Cycling in London is sooooo much faster than the other modes of transportation. And it's free!
I’m 58 and have been riding a bike to work for 8 years. It has kept me alive!
Bicycling in Puerto Rico has been growing so fast that now almost all of the 78 municipalities have bicycle trails. That's the best way to encourage the "sport", but we are still have one of the highest density of cars per square mile in the world.
I ride my bike every day.I was riding 600miles a month to work.I would love for the world to be bike friendly.
I agree
Try doing that when you are 55 with bad knees from doing it all your life.
@@googleuser6201 Yeah...badminton and cycle messes up your legs.. but...they look fantastic!!
Ride on!
Thanks for watching! Just trying to share the stoke.
I lost my license for life best thing that happened to me lost 51 pounds. I have lost 40 points on BP I love riding.
that is great! way to make a negative into a positive! congratulations!

i quit riding my bike a year later i had pneumonia then the doctor told me i would now have copd for the rest of my life and would always ALWAYS need an inhaler but 2 years ago when i started riding my bike again i stopped carrying my inhaler and a year ago i was free of the copd today i ride everywhere i don't own a car and i haven't been sick in 2 years not a cold or the flu and i don't take the yearly flu shot
Were you a smoker?
Dude I hate to tell you this but you didn't have COPD.. That is the fancy name for emphysema and it does not go away. You really need to get yourself a new doctor.
Haven't driven a car to work for an entire year coming this April and I love it!
Bravo! That's amazing commitment, keep it up!
My kind of cyclist! Welcome back to the bike life.
Preach!
It would also cause less car traffic if you think about it
I love biking and I do it daily....and my BP is now back to normal...bike with me and be happy!
Just got back on a bike after 30 years!, I’ve lost 15.4 kilo since feb 19.
Get on your bike !, it will change you forever!
Haha...
Time to change job. ;)
It’s a shame that attitudes towards cyclists in the UK is bad. There is a lack of infrastructure outside of cities. Most importantly the amount of dangerous drivers puts people off from cycling.
Stevegeek, just move 50km closer to work?
S1lent Toad , there are roads all over Britain that are perfectly serviceable for use by bicycles. As a cyclist for over 55 years, I've commuted, cycle-camped and picked up the groceries all over Britain including Glasgow, rural communities in the North of England, and London, on the roads already there.
Ride confidently and competently on the road. I'm not saying you won't get hit by someone scrolling through their playlist, but that shouldn't keep you off the roads.
Hopefully the Universe has blessed you with another job by now 💖
i commute 2 miles to work!! man i wish my trip was longer!!! and always have good weather
Daniel Soriano hey, ik this is ten months old but I'll still reply. Is it possible to reroute your trip to make it longer? Go online and find a route planner map and look for a way, I'm sure there is.
That's the attitude. You seem like a guy I'd like to ride my bike with.
Screw MOT, road tax, petrol and garage repairs! Start cycling and saving
Bikes = Financial savvy
Jeep'ers, motorcyclists, hikers, bikers. We're all about preserving what we've got!
Cars rule you because of the cost to run and maintain then.
Super -sim trucks rule because without them you wouldn't have a car or anything you in your life.
If you are broke..
Now my commute is a bit closer, 15-18 minutes on the bike or about 15 by car (heavier traffic so slower average speed by car, compared to cruising in the bike lane and only stopping at the red lights.)
I am also lucky enough to have a shower and lockers at my workplace.
My license was taken away by the state on my 16th birthday, I was never disappointed because I have a bike. It takes me places

This speech is incredibly relevant today.
Bicycles are awesome! "Just get out there and ride your bike :)"
This guy gets it!
Cheers!
biking is so much fun, it relieves stress, not creates it and keeps you in shape. Plus it's way cheaper than a car. (and faster if you're in a town and have less than a mile to go because of parking)

I have a car,but I ride my bike more often,I love my bike.
I live in the suburbs so everywhere I bike is about 3-4 miles away. Get a good bit of exercise that way and it’s always fun practicing wheelies on the way over to work
Due to a vision problem, I've ridden a bike all my life. I'm 53 now and I ride a recumbent, due to back and neck problems.
They say that recumbents are actually more efficient and aerodynamic then conventional bikes
Because people don't live near to the destination I need a car now I would love to have one I have watched this video 1 year ago and I got a bike but I am tired of riding I would love a car
I have been a regular cyclist for over 60 years. Sure, I have a car I use once or twice a week and I use trains too, but a bike is part of me, I cycle most days.
I would also put a bikeshop, talk with people who are passionate about cycling than dreaming to be rich. Cycling teach us simplicity.
i started riding bike when my driver's licence expired, and noone belived me (including parents), they tought police took it
This is inspiring, I want to get rid of my car because I have so much joy riding and this video validates this fact.
Way more fun than driving a car. Cheaper than driving a car. Emission is only 34 grams co2 per mile.
Unless you're a gassy dude. In which case probiotics are the fuel-cleaner of the body.
I love my car but I also love my bike. Did the park and ride in 9 miles each way today but then we're spoiled because we get paid to do so in bike commuter credits, private showers and indoor bike parking. Bikes and cars can coexist if we watch out for each other.
Cars are amazing tools, but they're not treated with the respect of this utility or as the luxury they truly are.
I would love to open a bike shop in my town I live in to help the people in my town to get off the couch.
Very nice video. The video I have been looking for my friends and family. They don’t seem to understand why I ride my bike 4 days per week 8 miles each ways. Its better than a car. More exercise. And I love it!

Cycling can also help older people maintain their ability to walk at levels seen in younger people by helping maintain muscle mass.

You can always tell a bike rider: when they are driving, they slow down, give you a wide berth, and cede the right of way. The non-bike riders come close to you, don’t slow down, assume the right of way, and usually make rude gestures at your existence.
Thanks for the talk
Thanks for watching and ride your bike!
e bikes will become the next big thing... just watch.... middle class is depleting at a rapid rate....
che cazzo dici?
Very true
They're starting to become popular around me, my city has a couple million people but it's spread over a gigantic area. I like my road bike for commuting, but even the average person on an ebike could do from my place to the city in roughly 30 mins, about 13km along the bikeway next to the highway. Comparable to driving, when you include traffic and parking. I'm often going faster than the traffic on the highway into the city in the morning.
Ebikes are great. They allow you cover more distance with the same level of effort. You get exercise and maintain a higher average speed.
E bikes to me are just cheaper motorcycles. You don’t really do any exercise which is kind of not the point of bicycles. I know people will go against me but it’s just how I feel about e bikes.
Never stop cycling
I would love to bike to work but the only way to work from where I live is along a highway where cars (including me) drive way too fast.
besides that I ride everyday when I get out of work..whoo! :)

In the Netherlands you grow up on the bike. Start cycling at a young age and learn how traffic works and how to use your senses.
Very interesting thanks for posting. Never realised bike use was declining in China.
After I got my electric bike I don't bother with the car as much unless I have passengers/stuff to pick up or the weather is terrible or it's more than about 30 miles.
Love from india. I ride 20 km a Day regularly
if cities implement a high parking cost in certain areas, it would decrease car use and increase bike use. cars have hidden costs for everyone, such as city money used for maintaining the roads, the ridiculous amount of space cars take up just sitting there, and the danger to pedestrians.
Prague, Czech Republic - A couple of months ago (around 03/2018) the city council decided to limit bikes in the centre due to the amount of tourists and pedestrians. So they're going the opposite direction :(
It's a balance. It's important for cities to think about public space and its uses and how to keep everyone safe, happy and healthy!

Haven't watched it with the captions, but the odd translation's pretty hilarious!
Interesting TED talk... But why is the audience asleep?
I believe they are in China (meaning they don't speak English) so they do not understand the speaker.
Cause they got up at 4am to drive to the conference - lol... Stuck in traffic jams the whole way. Should have rode a bike.
+Bill Patel
exactly!
Emotional content ❤❤❤❤😮😮😮

I own a Italian sports car which is very temperamental. I had to fix the constant velocity joints, locking brakes, shift linkage broke and now somekind of wire problem that does not allow me to start with the key. So I have been riding my bike to work 10 miles away. it takes me 50 minutes. And since I have a desk job this means that I get exercise that may be preventing diseases. Humans are not design for inactivity, they need to move and bicycles are just perfect to get exercise. People at work ask me why i dont drive? Get a car they tell me. I tell them that my bike cost more than their car. That leaves them thinking
Just make sure you lock it up after you tell them how much your ride costs!
Most of the time I dont ride my carbon fiber time trial to work. But my job has security guard where I park my bike
