  • Dr. Lera talks about what to expect before & after brachycephalic syndrome surgery with Giovanni, a two-year-old English Bulldog.
Brachycephalic syndrome is a combination of upper airway abnormalities that cause partial obstruction to a dog's breathing. The syndrome typically includes several conditions at once.
Elongated soft palate: The soft palate is the soft tissue that lies beyond the hard palate on the mouth. When the soft palate is too long, the end of it extends to the airway. This interferes with the movement of air into the lungs.
Everted Laryngeal Saccules: The laryngeal saccules are soft tissue structures near the vocal folds and the larynx (upper part of the trachea, or windpipe). When this airway tissue becomes everted (turned outwards), it gets pulled into the trachea and partially obstructs airflow.
Stenotic Nares: In normal dogs, the nostrils are the right size and shape to allow for normal breathing. The term "stenotic" refers to a narrowing or stricture. The term "nares" refers to the nostrils. When a dog's nostrils are narrow or collapse inward when inhaling, it becomes difficult for the dog to breathe through its nose. Thank you this was so helpful! My French bulldog boy came home today and I’ve noticed noisy breathing (different to pre surgery) and I was worried but with all the inflammation this makes sense!

Yes. This was very helpful. I have recently bought a new shihtzu puppy. She is the sixth one I have owned. But she is the only one that has had breathing difficulties. So I am preparing myself for her to have surgery at a later date. Thank you 🙏

Heron Lakes Animal Hospital. Well good news further on with this pup. She is now 8 months old and all breathing difficulties have resolved. She can race around and never has shortness of breath or noisy breathing. How did we get so lucky ? 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

George Azzopardi. Well my shihtzu actually outgrew her breathing difficulties by about 9 months of age. I wasn’t expecting that. She has grown into a large girl so I’m just hopeful she will continue ok. At her last vet visit he was happy with her progress. George I’ll be thinking of you both on Monday. The very best of wishes 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

We have just had soft palate surgery on our bulldog. He was allowed to come home about 2 hours after surgery. He very sadly died on our lounge room floor after 2 hours at home. My question is should he have been monitored for 12 to 24 hours in hospital

The fact that we bred these dogs to the point they wouldnt exist w/o us is an issue in and of itself(they cant reproduce naturally/artificial inseminations/c sections for births). Couple that with us breeding then to suffer every day life is just sad.
Yet I sound weird when I say we shouldnt keep breeding dogs like this. I sound weird when I question how much you love dogs when you contribute to the breeding of dogs who will suffer 😅😂
