    I do have a question please. If someone discards a tile, is it correct that if you need it, you can take it even if it’s not your turn to play? Also, if you take a tile from the discard pile, who makes the next move? Does it continue with the player who’s turn you interrupted by taking the tile, or does it start back up with the player on your left? Thank you so much for teaching everyone how to play Mahjong!

      Scenario 1: if any player discards a tile that you can pong, you can pong it and the right side of your player go next.
      Scenario 2: you can only chow from the person to your left. Not the front or right players. But let’s say your right side player discards a tile and your in front opponent wants to chow, but at the same time you can pong, the pong it player always pong it first.

      Any time a player chow, pong, or kong, the right side of the chow or pong player will go next because that person made their move.

    Thank you very much for your clear instructions and pictures!!!!! I am playing Mahjong with a MeetUp group every two weeks. I have only played twice so far, so your site really helps me understand. But the group I play with I think plays slightly differently. We do use Flower tiles, for example.

    Great videos, thanks for the explanations.
    Btw I love those chunky tiles, what are the size of those used in the videos?

    I agree with others about videos - great. Which wall is used to start the game? I've just received a vintage set and so am trying to learn this version of Mahjong. I already play the American version.

    If you could show some of the play from above, looking down so we can see what each player is doing that would help. Looking at the setup in this video, building the wall then each player drawing their hand, it appears they are drawing from the wall clockwise not counterclockwise as you say they should.

      The turn order is determined by throwing the dices by the dealer and rotates anticlockwise.
      The dealer leads other players to draw 13 tiles in a clockwise direction around the wall.

    Hi! Thank you for this video. :)
    Can you explain ways of counting the tiles, if you are playing more rounds? Are some sets (like kong) worth more points than a set with pairs? And are concealed melds worth more than revealed melds?

    • @ChinaEducationalTours
      @ChinaEducationalTours  2 роки тому

      Hello Milena,
      The way of counting points/scores varies in different regions across China. Taiwaness and Cantoness rules are more widely known in the west. Usually speaking, special hands, such as Thirteen Orphans, Pure One Suit, Big Four Winds, are difficult to make, so worth a lot more.

    i have found your videos very informative, thank you!! i am also wondering how to use kong, it seems as though you would have extra tiles when you play kong, am i missing something?
    but on a related question to this video, do you have to announce to the group when you have a ready hand?

    • @ChinaEducationalTours
      @ChinaEducationalTours  2 роки тому +4

      Thanks for liking our video. When you have a Kong, yes, you do have an extra tile in hand. It won’t affect anything as the Kong is a set just like a Chow or Pung.
      When you have a ready hand, you don’t have to announce it unless all four players make up this rule at the very beginning of a game.
      Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Is there a wining hand that involves a Kong, and a pair with 14 tiles. Can’t understand how to win with a Kong and a pair.

    Why “hu la” and not “mah jong”?
    When player 3 picks up the discarded character 6 in the end of the video, how can the player do that when it is not pong or chow but only a pair?

      It's the winning tile so it doesn't matter.

    but u cant win with chow + pong if u don't have an animal tile or a flower tile of your wind, so how is it allowed for player 2 to win?

    You mentioned drawing a tile as the first step of your play must be from the end of the wall and going counterclockwise for each player. Your video shows people drawing from the wall and going clockwise as each player draws. This is confusing.
