  • Basic headstock repair for a fresh, clean break on a budget guitar. No advanced touchup or additional reinforcements. Sorry for the poor sound - you may have to turn up your speakers....
*Please note - Ann Arbor Guitars only accepts jobs from walk-in clients. We do not and will not accept any shipped in repairs.

Thanks - The glue used was a traditional hot hide glue, made by Milligan and Higgins. The wipe on finish used in this budget case I believe was simply a Minwax polyurethane semi-gloss wipe on, though of course ideal choices will vary with different finish types and levels of intended restoration.

Nice setup on the clamping cauls/fixture..
Every luthier should have something similar..

Yes you can use PVA (yellow or white) and it will work fine for most cases. It's not my preferred glue however, due to it's very low heat resistance (even an hour in a car on a hot summer day could loosen a joint like this under tension), and it can even be somewhat prone to cold creep when a stressed glue surface is small and not assisted by any mechanical joinery.
Hot hide glue is much more heat and creep resistant, which can make it much more preferable for jobs like this.

What glues are acceptable for headstock repairs and what glues are unacceptable?
    Your job looks perfect!

What an amazing jig. Is it possible that you would share the plans over on Frank Ford's FRETS repair site? It seems to me, if you are not already on the site, that you would be a truly valued repair person over there. Frank, as you already must know, is ALL about getting as much instrument repair info out there, and this great vid qualifies you for sure. Thanks so much for sharing this. Kerry K

Are plans for this clamping jig available?

+dpetrzelka - Unfortunately, no. When I make tools and jigs such as this, it's rare that any drawn plans exist for them at any stage.

+A2Guitars thank you. I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum, where I do a CAD drawing of almost every jig/tool... This looks like a great next project.

The cost of this repair may exceed the value of the guitar.
