    I have done fantastic finish work with an inexpensive touch up gun from harbor freight. A larger compressor allows you to spray longer without waiting for the compressor to catch up. Not a big issue for guitars though. You could also just use an HVLP system with a turbine. There are some models that are not very expensive.

    @naminnooman Thank you. Glad you liked the video. I think that is a devilbiss finish line gun. Basically any gun will work if you have the correct needle size and set up your gun properly, correct flow, correct pressure, correct viscosity etc.

    Have you tried the Devilbiss FLG4 (finish line). It's fairly inexpensive and I find that it sprays much nicer than the Startingline. It's also lighter, and comes in a water-borne compatible version if you're interested in that at all.

    @naminnooman Basically any compressor will work. However, you want it to have a enough power and capacity to not have to wait for the compressor to "catch up" It needs to be able to supply constant air flow and pressure to the gun. On the green guitar I am applying lacquer clear topcoat over dyed maple and shellaced

    @187MIAMIBOY Smaller needle sizes are for low solid products like stains and dyes and larger needle sizes are for higher solid products like lacquer and urethanes. Usually a needle between 1.3mm and 1.5mm will work for most products and applications. You can also thin the products you arer spraying if they are not atomizing well

    I spray three to four coats a day and then level the next day before spraying another three to four coats. I spray usually 2 or 3 days before wet sanding and buffing. Don't forget to let the finish cure before attempting to level and buff

    @presleep Thank you and good question. I am using an industrial spray booth. This thing is very powerful and will suck the hair off the top of your head, if you have any. I am spraying away from the photographer, using an HVLP spray gun and all of the overspray is very quickly sucked up into the booth filters. Notice however, that I am wearing a mask cause I am much closer to the surface I am spraying.

    what a fantastic video! The very best out here. What spray HVLP would you recommend? Is that a DeVilbiss Finish Line you are using? Your help and recommendation would be of great help. Thank You so much once again

  • @OBrienGuitars
    @OBrienGuitars  13 років тому

    That depends...are you going to re-coat it with the same type of finish? If so, then sometimes a light scuff sanding and then you can re-coat. However, if you need to fix imperfections in the wood then you will need to completely remove the finish. I use a combination of scraping, sanding and stripping to do that.

  • @OBrienGuitars
    @OBrienGuitars  12 років тому

    I would use a white lacquer. You can make it yourself by adding pigment to clear lacquer or purchase it already mixed.

  • @OBrienGuitars
    @OBrienGuitars  12 років тому

    There are many things that can cause bubbles. Usually this comes from the surface skimming over before the air has a chance to escape from the finish. You have not told me what finish you are spraying but I would probably start by thinning it a skoshe and spraying lighter coats.

  • @OBrienGuitars
    @OBrienGuitars  11 років тому

    It is the figure in the wood that creates that effect. It has just been sprayed with a clear topcoat.

    Love that buffing wheel.Painted cars for 20 years now wood finisher for last 10.the only thing I would do different is sand in one direction no circles on light colors no difference but dark colors outside after a while will look like a spider web.I have done some hi gloss jobs on wood with car clear but you have to spray polyester (nast shit) sand 180 then clear,looks great lots of work.Closet Organizing Systems web site has a gloss ebony job I did a while back.

    good video! you should use a paint sock on your head sometime it can get into your ears and hair, also try a larger water filter mounted on the wall with silica unless you already have one, I use a sharpe one and a devilbiss desiccant air dryer snake hose, water is one of the biggest enimies of painting,

    Thanks so much for your response. I went and checked out a few compressors today. But was confused. What is the Compressor capacity and HP you would recommend for guitar finishing? I mean ONLY guitar finishing without having to use the same compressor for other jobs in the workshop. What is the finish that you are applying on the green guitar? Is that Nitro/polyester/polyurethane or acrylic urethane?

    Okay, thank you for pointing me in the correct direction. I found a ridiculously low priced spray gun on from Harbor Freight. Now, I need to find an air compressor to use. Any recommendations?? Unfortunately, I LITERALLY have no clue what I am looking for. Sorry. I literally want the cheapest air compressor I can buy that will get the job done. I do not need something HUGE, due to space constraints, so the smaller, the better. I do not know ANYTHING to look for...PSI? Size? Hoses? Connectors?

    I'm interested in building my own guitar from start to finish, in addition to finishing them as well. I do not have a HUGE budget to accomplish this task with, so I was wondering what is the minimum setup I can purchase to create professional finishes. What is the smallest air compressor I could purchase? Why do you need a large air compressor to begin with? What other things should I consider?

    Very good video! I have been out of woodworking for about 6 years now. I have worked for store fixture companies and kitchens companies. It seems that the whole industry is moving towards those gravity fed guns HPLV's. Has anyone had a good experience spraying water based varnishes? I want to make my self a new kitchen , but I'm not set up for laquer. (No spraybooth). Apparenently laquer still outperforms, but I am sick of dealing with it, even in the best spraying environments.

    I am curious about the fret board. When that gets lacquered how do you protect the frets? I just spray and scrape but do you think painters tape would be better and just tape the frets? This video helps. I have an issue with drying times on can spray and will try this instead. Right now after 24 hours of drying I still get imprints from what it is lying on which is a t-shirt.

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  3 роки тому

      I mask off the fretboard. This solves that issue. 24 hours should n be more than enough dry time to not have something imprint on the surface unless you are spraying extremely thick layers. Check your humidity level where you are spraying too.

    Hi there,
    I've got a beautiful idea to put some pressed flowers on my acoustic guitar but I'm afraid I might ruin it. I was wondering if you could give me some advice if there is some kind of spray glue I could use to put them on or should I put a whole extra layer of varnish on top? The varnish seems to be a bit expensive, I'm looking for a cheaper solution if possible. It would be amazing if you could give an idea how to do it!
