I grew up in Norway in the 60s, when we actually still lived according to Viking laws. These are the laws; fighting two against one was cowardly, kicking someone who was lyning down was cowardly. A fight was over when one of the parties said he surrendered. If you promise something, you keep it

Viking law number #1. If you see a piece of paper that says anything about viking laws use it for tinder.

Great video. Any time I see someone posting "laws" or "virtues" and try to say that those values are exactly what the Norse believed/held themselves accountable to (and therefore you must as well if you want to be a REAL Heathen) it always sets off red flags in my head, even if I don't have a problem with what was posted. It comes off as very Abrahamic.

But a Jarl was also fully responsible for what he did and could therefore very ill afford glorifying his personal acts of cruelty while condemning others for their lesser, or worse, petty acts of cruelty,
unlike "modern" politicians, each and everyone of these creatures accountable for barely anything less than genocide and/or other major war crimes. They get selected, pardon, are elected, for seemingly inverted criteria for someon representing anybody in anything, most strikingly, a nearly universal incompetence in each and every field of expertise, except one:
subversive, manipulative, cultish techniques in their Rhetorics, their otherwise low language skills unexpectedly serve an ulterior end to their other short-comings; the additionally absent skills prevent them from ever becoming anything other than a mere puppet, who needs more ghostwriters than any rapper in the world.
The subversion & manipulation with cultish language conceals their role as puppets, while the absence of language skills of actual value and practicality, which the citizens could recognize (and that cannot be), is to discredit suspicions, that their jargon is evil, as conspiracy theories, which in and of itself is such word of multiple, dialectical meanings; it is to communicate "New Age Eccentricity" towards the sheople, while towards those 'in da club' understand it as a warning, that someone's hypothesis of a conspiracy has either been proven by this person or that this someone's hypothesis of a conspiracy is very close to an actual completed, running or planned conspiracy.
To make such messages hidden in plain sight less obvious, actual New Age Ecccentricities are relabelled as conspiracy theories (which they cannot be in the first place, since these NAE have their origins in Mysticism, which is by definition never scientific, so mystic "hypothesise" remain as such forever since avoiding any conceivable way to prove or disprove the validity, is the central tennant of Mysticism, where all is solely subjective and having no room for any attempt to verify any tiny piece of it).
So the irreconcilable attributes of "modern" politicians and Jarls does not leave the, let's say, office of Jarl in too much of a bad light, I would argue. They were, to give a concrete example, just as violent or just as economically gifted as was public to some degree, at the very least they were straightforwardness incarnate, compared to lunatics like democratically (s-)elected Hitler, Mussolini, among innumerable other insidious parasites.

As much a we've no written law, common law that apply to everyone seems to be forgot after millennia of written work. 😉. Our basic human animalistic instincts and nature already knows how to behave as a society. Something else sadly missing today. Thanks again Arith for your common sense 😊

I had never heard of these "laws" before and when you brought them up on the screen, I laughed out loud reading them!! They were most definitely created by some "hip" HR department as a business motivational tool, probably by someone who used to be a Boy Scout (considering how similar these "laws" are to Scouting principles).

Nothing wrong with the 9 Noble Virtues, or following them, if they fit and benefit your life, but when I first came acress them years ago, they were being attributed to the Japanese culture and seem to be linked to the samurai. It wasn't until about 6 or 8 years ago that I started seeing them being connected to anything Viking/Norse related. It's doubtful we will ever find out the actual historical source.

Here's my extensively researched, peer reviewed, and fully vetted Four-Way Credo of the, let's say, Ninja:
    1. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.
    2. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.
    3. Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Makes sense, actually. Viking culture was primarily tribal. As a result the 'laws' would be expected to change from tribe to tribe. Historically, the same issue was found to be quite diverse between all Germanic tribes as a whole. Modern day Africa is proof of the changing set of laws from tribe to tribe, as well. Simply replace African tribes with Germanic tribes and, except for optics, the result is the same.

Viking laws: The things you do and achieve you do for your kin. Your honour follows you to your death and affects your kin. If you can win dirty or by wit - do it. All other proposed things are not true. We know since it still is so here in Scandinavia.

I use to be involved with a reenactment group. The people were friendly and it was a lot of fun. But at least once a gathering someone would say to me, "I wish I had lived back then." I could not help myself. I would have to point out that what we were involved in, what we were creating, was an idealized world. It did not exist. People were still people and I for one prefer hot & cold running water, flush toilets, and electricity. In short don't try to rewrite history. Learn from it.

Wouldn't these laws be more accurately called Scandinavian Laws rather than "Viking" Laws? Regardless of geographic occupation, ALL people of the North were Scandinavian. "Vikings" were a minority, being made up by Nobles and Upper Class men. "Vikings" was an Occupation, as in their job. Some Freemen participated in that activity as well. Calling all Scandinavians "Vikings" is misleading to the general public, unless they have a background in Historical studies. Skal

    • @ArithHärger
