Especially for GBA I got into modding gamboys during the pandemic and now I emulate 95% of the time. The cost and qol improvements emulation brings is what keeps me there.
No one but collectors and people trying to make a career out of selling original hardware and physical media in the 2nd hand market profits. Forego original hardware and physical media when you pretty much get a near 1:1 experience just to play the same game. With how good emulation handhelds are in the current day in age, extremely hard to convince me original hardware is better. You can give me original hardware for free and I would still not choose it over modern emulation handhelds.
Emulation is great, I have a emulation cartridge for my gameboy personally. I think one of the big ones is Modability. I can get cool shell replacements for my Gameboy advance, if I could for an emulator then I'd def shelf my gameboys to keep just for nostalgia. I love my Aurora Shell Gameboy Advance tho, it matches my phone case.
@@TotallyAGoblin I still have my backlit modded ips GBC with a flashcart but that has been replaced by the RG CubeXX for GB/GBC gameplay. The only original hardware that I pick up from time to time is my luma enabled N3DSXL for 3DS game specifically but even then it's just collecting dust since I can emulate 3DS via Citra on pc and play it on my LG Oled display for a far superior experience.

For the input delay on emulation, generally you can turn on preemptive frames on Retroarch settings to compensate for it and it gets either very close to hardware (1 frame off at worst) or sometimes better than original hardware if a game has a ton of buffer frames (Super Mario World for example, at leas the SNES version). This will hammer the CPU a bit but for 8 and 16 bit systems it's generally ok to turn on even on the XX anbernic devices.
YES! Pokemon Unbound is crazy good. The amount of content and new features is crazy. I love the Mission Log in the menu. Super useful. My only wish is one day seeing a Co-Op Pokemon game in this retro GBA format. That would be it for me.
I have 2 original GBA SPs and 2 flash carts as well as most of my old real carts. I also have an Anbernic RG351P which emulates the GBA fairly well. There's room for both but I would not be able to afford to replace my original games & consoles.
The fact that Nintendo made NES/SNES mini consoles but never made anything similar for their handheld consoles is such a missed opportunity. Luckily companies like Anbernic are filling that market. I think most people are priced out of the genuine retro market, and like you pointed out, original hardware is starting to show its age and sometimes requires serious time investments to maintain. I understand the appeal of genuine hardware but it’s just not for the masses anymore.

At this point, I'm just going emulation for handheld stuff because of how ridiculous the prices are for original cartridges and Nintendo's refusal to provide an alternative. If they made a full size GBA hand held with like 100 games from GB, GBC, and GBA including all of the Pokemon games with link cable support, it would sell like crazy. To quote Gabe Newell: "Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem." Unfortunately in this case, it's both.
Honestly, I don’t even do those emulation handhelds anymore They’re just trying to capitalize on our nostalgia. You can install retroarch and PPSSPP on your phone right now for free. PSX at 8x resolution or psp at 6x resolution maybe better if you have a better phone. Even 3 or 4 year old phone will out pace the chips in those handhelds
@@pimpinken8901 It’s not really about processor power. You don’t need much to do retro gaming and you get it in a more comfortable form factor with built in controls. But it’s all preference if you find that better for you that’s cool too

@ There’s a valid argument for phone emulation. I use to do it with a dedicated phone and controller. But still I personally prefer to play on dedicated emulation handhelds even if that comes with a power loss and I’m more limited in what games I can play. I do prefer to play older titles anyways so that’s not a problem for me. But If I did enjoy higher end emulation like GameCube or PS2 ide probably want something more powerful
Now on to gameboys I found maybe 7 since 2020 in the garbage while I was doing daily walks. I actually find all kinds of systems walking in my neighborhood from ps4 to Atari. Even found another neogeo last week

I am on both sides of the fence. my reasoning is nostalgia for the hardware which i own most of but im also not going to nock anyone who emulates. emulation for me is playing something you couldnt otherwise play or for instance i have a job, im an adult now but i have a price im willing to pay for video games, retro or otherwise and if its out of my budget well.. emulation or modding consoles is what i do for my hobby. there is something however so satisfying and magical about using the old hardware tho.. kinda why i could never fully say goodbye to it. also to make a note i have several retro handhelds that i use almost daily that i keep by my pc i love both ways and im happy people are enjoying these old great games because thats why i do it.
Good video brother. Quick question regarding your RG34XX though. Do the GBA boot intros work for you ? I'm running Knulli as well on my RG34XX and just can't get them to show up despite transferring my entire bios folder from stock OS. It's the one thing that's keeping my RG34XX from being pretty much perfect.
I'm definitely more a fan of emulation due to the convenience and the prices of authentic conoles and games just get more and more absurd. But I have to admit, that I recently started to collect GBA and NDS games, because it nice to own the games that I grew up with :D For the GBA my favourite alternative is the Revo K101 Plus. Nowadays it gets clowned on because it's quite outdated, but it comes with its own Flashcard and still can play real cartridges.
I would purchase Rainbow Six Rogue Spear cartridge just to have it. It suffices more than well on the 35XXSP. One of the best gba games to ever be released.
For historical saving reasons and the ability to play the expensive games, go emulation. Old nerds like me covet the original hardware the most because we have childhood memories attached. I can totally understand why a kid today would want to skip all that when they can just slap all their roms on to their phone haha. A PSP1000 is my personal favorite device to mod. It's OG hardware with emulation perks.
I'm With you I love Pokemon but I'm not loaded like that and I got no other ways to play the classics so I play on my Anbernic devices guilt free I love my old GBA but I don't have it anymore if I did the 34XX is still the more attractive option everything is on them no batteries to worry about hard battle just save midway through and keep fighting till you win it worked against old man Watson haha I do miss the feeling of popping cartridges in but I'm good with playing retro games this way if I ever get a stream deck or something to hold my modem day games I'd be straight.
You gotta go with a funnyplaying upgraded motherboard, just gotta transfer the ram and cpu along with a laminated ips and a Ezflash DE it’ll support rumble with some games. I also like the original for the wireless adapter for trading Pokémon or things of that nature.
I've got a lot of OEM hardware, some I've reshelled and/or fixed myself. Aside from PSVita and *new* 3DS XL, I emulate on either my RG35XXSP or RG406V.
I have both handheld emulators and several original handhelds. I want to say one thing in defence of my original GBA, which I consider the greatest handheld ever created. I can travel anywhere and get replacement AAs from any 7-Eleven. It boots up in seconds, and I don't have to futz with seven or eight menus and lists just to play TMNT or Advance Wars. And swapping a cartridge is just so pleasurable to feel and hear. That being said, playing Pico-8 games on my RGB30 is also pretty fun. Edit: I just want to qualify my statement. I keep the qualities that I love, like cartridges and AAs, and upgrade the ones I don't, like the screen. Don't get caught up in pure original, or pure emulation. And don't let the purists make you butthurt, just do what you love, and for the things that are too expensive, just emulate. Enjoy your hobby, it's not a competition.

I've given up trying to fix my PSP1000, and the hinge on any DS is a failpoint... having to baby my handheld is just the worst. I've got my eye on the RG Nano or Miyoo Mini now. Seems ideal just for short vacations, and both seem to handle a few bumps pretty well. Right now my daily driver is the RGB30 but it's a little big, and its a little plasticky too.
@ The Miyoo Mini is a masterpiece. I recommend a transparent color like black or blue because they feel better than the solid colors. And that combined with Onion Os and you have PEAK handheld experience. Trust me. Cartridge mode, game switcher, themes, activity tracker, everything. It’s the best easiest recommendation
With the original GBA I could use a link cable to play with other people. Can the modern device connect with other ones? Maybe using the USB port? I find it ironic that so many people emulate pokémon games, while neglecting the fact that the original games required connectivity for the full experience.

I think emulator consoles are cool but if you get a bad quality game some features won't work in some cases like sometimes i cant trade my pokemon up generations or other authentic games so I really only do it for the games that are overly expensive for me
Are you using custom firmware? I’m on stock and can’t get the quick boot up. How did you do it? Although I did figure out how to change the splash screen haha
I prefer emulation for multiple reasons. First is the price. There's no way I'm going to hunt down old cartridges and spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on them. Second is that you can play games from multiple systems on one handheld. If you get the original hardware you're limited to just that system.

I don’t think these emulators are reliable. I played thru one pokemon game on it just fine but then the next one I only got half way in before I couldn’t load up my console anymore and it turned out to be a common issue
Because people like original hardware. I own just about every new system(pc, ps5, switch, valve index ect ect) and i'll still pickup my ds lite to play pokemon. I just bought a mod kit for my GBA. You can play games on whatever you want but I prefer certain games on OG hardware. I can get save states on flashcarts and cheats if I want them. If you don't OG hardware and the carts, emulate all you want. There is room for both
@@pocketwyvern98 the OG consoles being that costly I'd rather use an anbernic or powkiddy. As much as I honestly love the OG devices the ROI is just not balanced.
Because it's possible to enjoy both and old hardware can be modded easily with modern upgrades that give many advantages you would get on emulation. Fpga is also an option, of hardware also just feels, looks and runs better in some cases like with arcade games and n64, which are still flakey emulation wise.

My ezflash omega de (cheaper than the RG34XX) can do savestates, cheats and sleep. All on my og GBA and ds lite. You stated that it's impossible to do so but these flashcarts have been out since BEFORE the release of the RG34XX which is what a month or two since release... Name another 3:2 aspect ratio handheld? Before the RG34XX there were like 4. Most people that love GBA want to play on the correct aspect ratio of which, there aren't that many emulators. People mod or use original GBAs because there was barely anything on the market that played GBA the way we wanted, so we did it ourselves. you prefer emulation, cool whatever but you weren't truthful in this video about the reason why people relied on orignal hardware. Plus you plain lied about what the gba can and can't do. The gba carts can't do modern QOL but a decent flashcart for 70 bucks sure can

Those plans got scrapped when Nintendo Online became a thing and to make people pay for their subpar online service by giving retro gaming

emulation is the Key to game Preservation.
There are easy type c mods for original game boys so you wont have to worry about the corrosion and the best part is theres no soldering needed

I don't feel lag on the RG 353P with respect to GBA, NES, or SNES.

Fpga is also an option, of hardware also just feels, looks and runs better in some cases like with arcade games and n64, which are still flakey emulation wise.

My ezflash omega de (cheaper than the RG34XX) can do savestates, cheats and sleep. All on my og GBA and ds lite. I play rom hacks on my gba and ds lite. in fact i'm playing unbound on my ds lite right now as i'm typing. You stated that it's impossible to do so but these flashcarts have been out since BEFORE the release of the RG34XX which is what a month or two since release... Name another 3:2 aspect ratio handheld? Before the RG34XX there were like 4. Most people that love GBA want to play on the correct aspect ratio of which, there aren't that many emulators. People mod or use original GBAs because there was barely anything on the market that played GBA the way we wanted, so we did it ourselves.
you prefer emulation, cool whatever but you weren't truthful in this video about the reason why people relied on orignal hardware. Plus you plain lied about what the gba can and can't do. The gba carts can't do modern QOL but a decent flashcart for 70 bucks sure can

I looked into flash carts and the best ones are around $60 to $110 depending on which you end up getting not including the cost of an SD card. When I say original hardware I’m referring to games too not just the console. Obviously a flash cart doesn’t fall under original hardware. Not licensed or made by Nintendo. This topic will be my next video including flash carts on original hardware vs emulation handhelds

@@JaviPlayRetroSure man... whever you say. The ezflash omega is 56 buck on amazon and a 32gb sd card can be under 10. Thats less than the entire RG34XX with no sd card. If you don't have the original hardware, sure there is no reason to buy it 2025. but if you already own it... but you have a bias. that's fine. I own multiple emulation and original hardware devices. I'll only play gba on my ds lite gba or SP. I'm only playing GC/Wii on PC different strokes
