A look back at Gymnastics during the Paris 1924 Olympics

    Gymnastics in the 1924 Olympic Games barely resembled the current competition format. Athletes competed collectively, with only a few seconds on each apparatus, which we can identify as some of the same apparatus found it today's gymnastics events
    The Paris 1924 Olympic Games were the last time only men competed in gymnastics, with women having their debut in the Amsterdam 1928 Summer Games.

    I actually really like this. It's a purer form of the sport and focuses on maintained agility and grace. It seems to be more like what the ancient Greeks would have done: bring groups of their finest men/soldiers together to show off their exemplary ability in advanced athletic skills.

    Keep in mind that they were not proffessional athelets, since it was forbbiden. They were just regular people with regular jobs

      @@MegaUpstairs It's legit. One of the ice skating pairs in the winter Olympics from the 70's? had their medals taken because they participated in a professional show a few months before they competed.
      Some of them may have been from the circus or similar bot not many.

      Forgive my sports history ignorance, but what do you mean by forbidden?

    • @werm3169
      @werm3169 11 днів тому

      @@djm4854 Historically, to be eligible to compete in the Olympics, you may not be a professional athlete - you may not ever have accepted money or compensation for competing, or received money or compensation for advertising a product using your athleticism. You have to be doing the sport for the sake of the sport and making no money from it. Professional athletes who make money from their sport are ineligible to compete in the Olympics.
      Today, professional athletes are considered eligible in most sports, but some actually have different leagues for professionals and amateurs.

    Only the ignorant mock these athletes and their training. Everything in sports has a starting point. Gymnastics would be nowhere today without what it originated from.

      That wasn't "gymnastics", but calisthenics or warm up. The horse stuff was kinda gymnastics, but they were a little more advanced than that in competition. Not much, though.

      @@erikbaran7197 Synchronized calisthenics was part of gymnastics back then, as was rope climbing, high jumping, running, and many of the apparatuses we know today. Just because the sport changed doesn't mean it's not the sport.

    I know that uniformity of physique and stature have been a long-standing expectation in many events and that the view is only shifting relatively recently, and many people still hold more specific preferences. That said: wow, the similarities form one athlete to another is quite striking! _(This is not meant to address ethnicity or race.)_

    Military training was really the only organized training available for most anything including corporate management.
    And military training models continue to be some of the best training models available.
    If only people would make use of those military models ... especially nutrition, wellness and exercise.

    Wrong. This is the actual event. You may notice the uploader is the IOC by the way. This is how gymnastics was performed and yes back in 1924 many events were watched by small attendances. No travelling fans, media entourage or vast swathes of team mates and family cheering them on. just a few curious locals.
