- Thank you to our Alpha patron Joel FOR ANOTHER WINNER! Wow. I have heard a cover of the first song somewhere but never heard this version of it. The original is usually the best and that's no different here. They are like a mix of the early Beatles (like the album behind me) and early Doors at the same time. Such a great mix. Thank you Joel!

Other great songs by the Animals are “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, “We Gotta Get Out of this Place.”
You took the comment right off my fingers! :)
"We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" has one of the best bass intros in the entire 60's catalog. Another song of theirs with a distinctive hook is "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".
"It's My Life" has a killer bass intro also.
An excellent cover of "We Gotta..." is by Katrina & the Waves (I think it's from the soundtrack of China Beach TV series). The outstanding video on UA-cam has Eric Burden doing backing vocals. It really is a blast to see him do this & the song is great also.
I fully agree
Robby Krieger has admitted that The Doors were very much influenced by The Animals.
Now listen to “ Don’t let me be misunderstood” and “ When I was Young”👍🏻🎼🎸❤️
This is a traditional song. The bassist, Chas Chandler, left the band and in 1966 used his earnings to bring to the UK and manage a unknown US guitarist named Jimi Hendrix.
Eric's vocals are legendary.
Chas Chandler quit and became Jimi Hendrix's manager.
Bass player
The tall guy in the video.
The tall bass player named Chas.🙄
About 21 years old with that voice. Wow.
That organ is a sure identifier of a 60s song. Then the Moog came along.
Vox Continental.
@@user-ph9wt3ue7cthat Vox sound is as distinctive as the B3.
"The Animals" were inspired to do "House of the Rising Sun" after hearing the 1960 cover version by Bob Dylan from his 1st album. Dylan's version is very intense, and not very well known, with Dylan singing from the traditional perspective of a woman fallen into prostitution. The Animals changed the lyrics to portray a young man, fallen into gambling and drinking. Eric Burdon is deep into the blues, and his explosive vocal power and soul were unique. Animals also had great keyboard and drums. For a different Burdon experience, check out his early-70's band "War", like amazing trippy soul/funk song "Spill The Wine".
Yes, Spill the Wine is a must listen. About the history of House of the Risin Sun, Dylan's version was inspired by the arrangement by Dave Van Ronk.
And “Tobacco Road”. That’s a really good one too, especially the live version.
By the way - War was not just Eric Burdon’s band. They went on to have a very successful career with many hit records on their own after he split with them. Songs like “Low Rider”, “Slippin’ Into Darkness”, “The Cisco Kid”, “Me And Baby Brother”, “The World Is A Ghetto”, and “Why Can’t We Be Friends” among others.
Eric is one cool singer. We never got enough of him.
Eric has aged well. Looking good for 82!
And still has the pipes!
Eric is still alive and kicking and will turn 83 on the 11th of this Month
Eric’s voice is the catch for me. “San Francisco Nights” is a great song , and Eric with War is worth exploring.
The Egg Man, himself... what a voice, but Alan Price kills that organ
Alan Price plays on "House of the Rising Sun" but it's Dave Rowberry playing keyboards on "Don't Bring Me Down"...
They're mimicking a New Orleans funeral march by walking single file while playing the music. The origin of the song is in dispute. Some even saying it came from France back in the 1700s or something.
Bass player here later managed a guitarist named Jimmy James, pulled him out of obscurity and brought him to England where they formed a band called the Experience... the rest is history
P.S. "we gotta get out of this place" was popular with the guys serving in Vietnam at the time.
Animals bass player became the manager of Jimi Hendrix.
Chas Chandler 'discovered' Hendrix whilst on The Animals final US tour, and he convinced him to come to the UK. He found Jimi accommodation, a drummer and a bassist, and funded the band's first single 'Hey, Joe'. It was also Chandler's gimmick idea for Jimi to set fire to his guitar on stage.
Animals formed '63. Doors in '65.
Eric was one of the best singers back then. They didn't write many songs, so that worked against them in the long term.
Another great one by tbe Animals; "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" from 1965. An iconic song and, apparently, immensely popular with US Armed Forces G.I.s during the Vietnam War.
They did a song called “We Got to Get Out of This Place” which was our unofficial class song in 1967. Good one.
Also (if I understand correctly) of US soldiers in Vietnam...
The Animals were from Newcastle. Keyboard player was Alan Price, who had a successful solo career. Singer, Eric Burdon, later moved into Frank Zappa's house, The Log Cabin, on Laurel Canyon.
Doors were ‘67 through ‘71
House of the Rising Son is a traditional folk song and the Animals took about 30 minutes studio time to record it. The band later became Eric Burdon and the New Animals and played amazing psychedelic style songs
Bruce Springsteen has said that every song he ever wrote was a version of the Animals’ We Gotta Get Out of This Place.
Eric had a journey. Get on board and enjoy...
This was live on The Ed Sullivan Show it was a Sunday night Variety Show Must C for the family
"House of the Rising Sun" is actually a traditional American folk song & it's usually done in a major key. Alan Price, The Animals' keyboardist, wrote just the music for this version, which is in a minor key. So, this isn't the *original* version of the song; it's a reimagining of the song with darker music than the original, though the lyrics are pretty much the same as the original.
The Doors first formed in 1965 & released their first album in 1967. There was definitely an influence of The Animals on The Doors. The Animals formed in Newcastle, England, around the same time as the Rolling Stones in London. They didn't last long, though; the original line-up broke up in 1966, & a new line-up reformed in 1967 as Eric Burdon & The Animals.
This was the first tune that everyone learned to play on the guitar for their party piece, before Wonderwall.
The Doors weren't around in '64
'65 - yes
"....With one foot on the platform
And the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear that ball snd chains..." says it all.
Once you've been bitten you can never go back can happen with so many things in life.
Some addictions can be too strong to break.
The first song influenced Dylan to go electric. Try We'Ve Gott Get Out of This place, Don't Let me Be Misunderstood, Bury My Body, When I Was Young, Inside Looking Out, San Franciscan NIghts, Sky Pilot, Monterrey, I'm an Animal, Gemini, etc.
This is an all time classic song. It is in the top 100 of pop/rock/ bluesy tunes!
House: Still goosebumps after all these years. So advanced for 1964!
He's really "working out" on the keyboard, as we used to say.
When I watched your reaction to the Door's "Light My Fire" with your appreciation of Ray Manzarek's keyboard playing, I thought to myself that you'd like to see this one from the Animals. Alan Price wailed on this song, and next to Eric Burdon made this song the lasting hit that it is.
Great reaction and review, The Animal's "When I Was Young" "It's My Life" "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" "Monterey" and "Don't Bring Me Down" The Animals had hits. Try to react to their studio versions because the video's audio is pretty bad. They had a lot more hits and these were my favorites back then. Bitchen Premiere countdown.
The walking is to represent the funeral procession in New Orleans. Reason Hilton was smiling is off-screen the techs were rolling Alan to the front and it struck his funny bone.
Seen this clip many times and only just realised the same thing today. I wondered initially if there was an edit to get the next shot set up, but I think you're right Alan got wheeled across the studio. They all keep the poker face so well throughout, but Hilton just cracked at the last hurdle. It's even funnier because Eric is oblivious to it and he's putting on his best moody face.
I was a kid when I first saw them on the Ed Sullivan show... whole new level at the time!!
I was 7 years old when House of the rising sun was out. Awesome song
Doors are '67-'70. Animals came in '64 but months after Beatlemania exploded in January of that year. Eric Burdon had hits with and then without the Animals, including Spill the Wine with the multi hit group War. He also had an interesting anti-war song, Sky Pilot, during the time of the Vietnam War protests.
Eric Burdon and the Animals are Huge you need to see Eric's solo stuff and his later Band War
This song is from the early 1930's. The Animal's version was a cover. Very, very old song. The oldest known recording of the song is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933.
They were part of the British invation
Check out Eric’s later work with War. There’s a great video of their version of “Spill the Wine”. He’s one of the great classic rock vocalists. ✌️❤️🎶
Interesting that Dylan’s version a few years earlier was from a female perspective “It’s been the ruin of many a poor girl, and God I know I’m one” and the Animals switched up the gender to male.
You definitely should check out Eric Burdon & The Animals from their 1967/68 incarnation. 'Sky Pilot' & 'San Francisco Nights' are masterpieces.
The Animals were seminal to rock, Eric’s other band War were even more famous, IMHO, and produced a boatload of classic, funk, rock hybrid songs. Low Rider, Spill the Wine, Cisco Kid, The World is a Ghetto and many other lesser known deep cuts. Worth a dive Lee.
Eric Burden has that great "Blue-Eyed Soul" voice. The next great voices were by Stevie Winwood and The Righteous Brothers.
This is a more modern take " modern at the time" on an old folk tune sung in rhe bayous of South Louisiana. The story goes that the House of the Rising Sun was a brothel in the red light district of NO , now the French Quarter. There is a house down in the Quarter still that is said to be the actual House of the Rising Sun
Yes, but I believe the New Orleans red light district was called Storyville and was located just north of the French Quarter.
The first time I saw this I thought ‘where did that kid get that voice?’ Honestly he looks like a junior in high school!
The Doors were not until 1967.
Eric Burdon has a terrific voice! And The Animals were quite popular back in the 60's. I was only like 7 years old when this song came out, but I have a sister who is older than me and she blared all this 60's music - all the time! I consider the disco/jazz fusion music of the 70's more my style, but I know all of these songs and artists from a decade earlier. Kind of neat to be as old as a lot of us are now, and have been around to witness the progression of music from Elvis to today. Things have definitely changed!
House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song. A number of people told them it was a bad choice, but it was their biggest hit. Great review!
eric is a legendary vocalist
\
The song is a very old folk song that is in common domain. It was first recorded by music historian Alan Lomax, who did extensive field research on folk music during the Great Depression.
I read that it was recorded in Appalachia in 1930 as part of folk music research...
@@susanmallet766 That sounds right. Lomax had a recorder that recorded onto aluminum disks, and went up into the hills and hollers and recorded any folk music that anyone was willing to sing into the machine. So much old music would have been lost if he hadn't done that.
@@susanmallet766 Yes, by Alan Lomax or one of his research team members.
I was a kid when the animals came out. Yes. Great great band. Great music 🎶
They recorded this song in one take imagine that,no fucking auto tune. None of them wrote this song, its origins are hard to track down.
The Animals got the song from Bob Dylan's debut album (and Dylan got it from Dave Van Ronk, but that's another story.) That makes it one of earliest examples of Folk Rock,
Alan Price was a really good keyboard player and I LOVE the sound of that VOX organ.
"Sky Pilot (Parts 1 & 2)" is another great Eric Burdon & the Animals song. Eric Burdon went on to form the funk band "War" in 1969. Check out "Spill the Wine". Awesome!!!
Linda Keith, British model saw Jimi Hendrix in the village. She saw his talent. She brought America producers to see Hendrix perform. They didn't get it. She finally took Chas Chandler down to one of the clubs where he was playing. He immediately saw his talent. He took Hendrix to England, formed the Experience and Jimi was on his way.
My wonderful friend and I had just finished
Our bad ass super speakers. We put on ear protection and put on Sky Pilot. Then we went to buy glass for the windows that we shattered!
I've heard that House of the Rising Sun is an old southern American song that's been covered loads of times but The Animals are by far the best.
Eric Burdon later moved to San Francisco and joined the band “War”. Here is a live performance of their “Spill That Wine”: ua-cam.com/video/4-Xs7NK-7B8/v-deo.html. He is a great performer.
Music videos have been around a good while. They were often shown as shorts at film theaters. I know that Duke Ellington made some as early as the 1920s.
THANKS for this one, Lee! GLAD to hear you're having a GREAT FRIDAY, HON!!! HUGS!
Different drummers
John Steele left the band earlier in the year (1966) that the 2nd song was released
His replacement was Barry Jenkins
The 1st video was from a movie released here as "Go Go Big Beat" that featured many of the top bands in the UK at the time. The bassist, Chas Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix. I knew Hilton. He was an absolute sweetheart. I've seen Eric many times. Still has those pipes. Check out "Spill The Wins" by Eric Burdon and War. The Animals morphed into Eric Burdon & The Animals who had many hits including "San Francisco Nights", "Sky Pilot" & "Monterrey"
This is an amazing song and it grows on you more and more as you watch it or listen to it. Definitely a classic.
Doors meets Beatles - I like the analogy.
The guy playing keyboards is Alan Price, who still has a fantastic singing voice and had a very successful solo career as a singer/songwriter❤
Spill the Wine Eric Burdon and War
Eric Burdon was also lead singer for early tracks from a band called War. Really great stuff
Have always loved this track! Erics voice just does it for me ❤
Deep Purple, one of the unholy trinity of British rock in the 70s. SMOKE ON THE WATER. The famous rift
Just finished House of the Rising Sun and yeah man, it was slightly before my time or technically I was alive but slightly before my memories. But I go to love this song from many quarters but I've always loved this animals version the most. Years later in high school I got to see Eric Burdon and most of the animals at a small venue in Wichita kansas. And I have to tell you man it's hilarious man he was kind of short and he had this like burgundy leather jacket on but even then he was probably in his 40s I guess, but he had this intensity about him and he could fucking belt. It was a real treat.
Please listen to dont let me be miss understood
Love these guys " my Generation " was the best music ! Ty for watching and getting our 60s music. .
While Beatles were singing "Please Please Me", Animals did this.
Every time you hear House of the Rising Sun it's a cover. LOL
We gotta get out of this place is another banger to hit !
They were my favorite band back in the day. They were ahead of the Doors. This era of Rock was blues influenced. Maybe you should look into some bluesmen.
The best cover of House of the Rising Sun was by Frijid Pink in 1971.
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥🔥can’t wait
I could see where the Doors would be influenced by this band.
It's a cover of an older traditional song that changed a little bit over the years until it got recorded. Bob Dylan recorded it before the Animals.
Great reactuons! A fantastic, iconic band from the early days of rock.
Eric Burton vocal.chas Chandler bass.john Steele drums.hilton Valentine guitar.alan price keyboard.chas and Hilton are gone.eric still performs.check out the Winds of change album from 1968
Eric Burdon is still outstanding at 82! Also, kudos to bass player Chas Chandler - he later went into management and gave us Jimi Hendrix!!
(Later) Ewww, what's a stink bug? We don't have them in the U.K.!
Anyways, you should hear "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" and "It's My Life"
I have heard that the band nailed this recording in one take because they couldn't afford much studio time. In and out-huge hit.
That was so good to see. Brings back 60s childhood days, surrounded by radios playing neat songs all the time.
Eric Burdon has a great voice.
Thanks, Lee and Joel!
My favorit song and favorit group from the 60,s and The 60,s hade so much great groups , i was born in 1956 so i was very young and dont understand english back then . But the music and Eric Burdons voice, blow me a way . I still love the Animals original line up whish this is , listen to Gin House Blues, Going Down Slow , and Sky Pilot the New Animals and Tobacco Road the same group, and try Eric Burdon and war Mother Earth, Spill The Vine ,
Both the Doors and Grand Funk Railroad among others were influenced by these tough Newcastle boys. Alan Price came up with the serpentine organ lick of House of ...he left early on. Bassist Chas Chandler was the guy who helped find musicians get exposure and a record deal for Jimi Hendrix, bringing him from NYC to London.
I believe Alan Price couldn't go on overseas tours with them because of his fear of flying.
@@johnsilva9139 It could be true, that was also the case for Gene Clark and I think for Arthur Lee of Love ?
One of the best rock band🤘
“Sky Pilot”, “San Franciscan Nights”, and “Monterrey” are three of their best songs by the Animals but there are so many other fantastic songs also. You might also want to check out Eric Burdon and War.
The Animals, and almost everything Eric Burdon did, was so much cooler than all the boring Doorsstuff. "Winds of Change" and "Love Is" are crazy! "Paint It Black" and "Ring Of Fire" are two of the greatest coverversions around. - Happy to see, today is more Burdon to come!
other great tracks from the animals-Sky Pilot, Monterey and Boom Boom. also check out Eric Burdon with War-Spill the wine. You may have heard the cover version of House Of The Rising Sun from Frijid Pink in 1970
I don't think people know who first sung this song. But this is my fav cover and film clip. Besides ELP ''Fan fare For The Common Man.Wich is epic!!!!
If you want another couple of great songs to react to try Sky Pilot (extended version) and When I Was Young. San Francisco nights is another one from these guys. Incredible group.
