    Don't worry about adding rops. Those old Ford's don't have enough power to pull a good Catholic off his knees. Especially on snow, I mean your still alive right?

    Regarding your first 2 points. The loaders come off of those tractors in a couple minutes and are just as easy to put back on. They come with either turf, industrial, or ag tires.

    This is how my father and grandfather hauled logs out of the woods when I was a kid, except he had a 1942 Massey Harris 33. I remember watching them skid out three trees at a time when it came to the smaller 8-12" stuff and one at a time with the bigger stuff. :)

    What you atta do is get a 7inch back blade and pull trees with that if you revers it so you would plowing snow in revers so that when your pulling trees your tractor won't lift up on top of you

    Slow and persistent is the way to go, I enjoyed the video.
    There were some very tight spots you had to maneuver, but you did it !

    Use a 2 wheel lifter, I don't know the exact name but going back to the 1900's with horses pulled a 2 wheel skidded that lifts the ends of the log so it can't dig in meaning it's a lot easier to skid it out of the woods .

      James Shanks It was called a logging arch. When forward motion ceased the butt end hit the ground. When you started moving, they picked the front of the log up several inches.

    Nice video.
    I started out with an old 900 Ford and a chain on the drawbar when I was 15 years old, and have logged every way since.
    We got a winch on the Ford 900 shortly afterwards and that helped immensely. Then I got a Kubota 4X4 and liked that, but a bulldozer really works wonders in the woods. I now use a skidder at age 43, and it is faster, but my preferred way is actually with a bulldozer. I am not saying it is the best, I just like logging slow and low I guess.
    As for all the other comments...I agree with all of them to some degree. I look fondly at my old Ford 900 days and wished I never sold it as well.
    Nice video, thanks for posting...

    My family has had 8ns since before I was born. I have used one for many years. An elderly gentlemen told me to NEVER pull without something on the back (such as box blade) to keep it from going over backwards. The elderly gentlemen told me his father was killed when his 8n flipped over and the steering wheel crushed his chest. His father was pulling a car out of the ditch.

    one thing people don't think abound, these tractors have so much power, they will walk right up and over up side down so fast you don't have a chance to push the clutch in and you are pined an hurt really bad if not dead under Neath the tractor, there pulling a tree an it gets stuck on a stump in 3rd gear or 2nd and you are up an over so fast, as a volunteer on the first response team, I have seen far to much of this every year, some are luck and live but many are gone before we get there

  • @cpenn9304

    Lose the chain and get a pair of log grabs.When you hook and use the lift the weight is shifted to the wheels and the end of the log swings under the drawbar preventing the tipping backward everyone is worried about.I’m 65 and have been doing it since I was a boy.If you want good performance from the 8n use premium gas.There was no 87 or 89 octane when that tractor was built. It will safely pull more than you think.You will also need exhaust out the back for much use in the woods.

When we do get it running, it will get a ROPS like my modern Kubota. These old 8N, 9N, TO-20 and 30, were very capable of doing immense work AND can fall over or tip back just like any other tractor. Nice 8N! Keep her going!

      So when you say hi/low do you mean hi range and normal range? It sounds like you have a step up and then the normal stock range. At the time they also made a step down which was slower than factory range. As far as I know this was all aftermarket and could come in any configuration: just step down, just step up, step down and step up.

    trick to a 3 point hitch is NEVER EVER pull with your drawbar above the tractors axels. As long as your not above it usually even though the front end comes off the ground it will stop at a certain point. If your drawbar is above the axel now is when the front end comes up easily and the tractor flips so fast it isn't funny. That's a good running old ford...she sounds strong...be careful with that exhaust...those things eat exhaust valves for lunch

    make a stick 2 inches x half inch x four feet long plus 4 extra inchs. place it at end of log and cartwheel it along the log to measure it. for lumber always make cut longer then what you want [ the extra 4 inches alowes for the mill to trim exact]. mark the stick in middle for two foot mark. example ; two sticks equals 8 foot boards or two and a half sticks equals 10 foot boards and 3 sticks equal 12 foot boards. this is called bucking the logs. [ cut -skid - buck - stack - load to the mill. ] if the bottom /trunk gets wide then trim it off before measuring. the mill dose not want the stump.. allways trim branches off along the straight line of the log, not 90 degrees to the branch. you want a smooth log , no bumps. and if the tree has a bend init cut it at the bend to keep the boards straight at the mill. never cut a hollow tree as it is home for the animals. and its also danger to cut cause u never sure which way it will go. stay in the same path skidding even if it gets real muddy bad. this keeps the damage down to the forest..

    And this has what to do with new compact tractors?

    • @stuntcardriver
      @stuntcardriver  7 років тому +6

      New compact tractors wouldn't be able to handle this type of work. Also they cost big money ($16,000) you can get an 8n for $2000 or less and will out work a compact all day long.

    • @Conklikov
      @Conklikov 7 років тому +3

      While I agree with you, on buying a cheaper older tractor, New compacts could handle this work if equipped properly. Beet juice in the rear tires and a few suitcase weights upfront can really change the way they tractor handles. The subcompacts, are fairly usless for this kind of work, but a good compact can handle this and more while being more fuel efficient and having less maintenance for a new machine. But thats the thing, any new equipment will have benefits. I got a 1963 allis chalmers d15 40 horse tractor to do hay with, my dad bought a 2016 kubota mx5200, 52 horse, That thing can work circles around the allis, do we still use allis, hell yes. But I tell you what, gas motors are not built to last like a diesel. The allis was rebuilt with new sleeves 10 years ago, probably only 800 hrs on it and its starting to burn oil again. Its needed all new electrical system and new sediment bowl. I would say the only benefits to these tractors over new ones are they have more frame weight, cheaper, and easy to work on, but you will need to work on them more in the long run. A new tractor , well maintained should last 25 years and more. That old ford is at least a 1950 or older, so you figure a 16000 dollar tractor you pay off in 4 to 6 years, its a long term investment, But the old adage stays, buy the biggest tractor you can afford.

      So what would you say is equal to the 8n? I looked at Yanmars and based on the physical size I would need a 30 hp Yanmar. How does the hydro-static drive hold up to pulling? I found a nice IH 544 hydro with loader with 700 hrs.

    • @Conklikov
      @Conklikov 7 років тому

      ya you would need a 30 ho or bigger to get equal, but diesels do have different torque levels and can do better under loads, Ive always heard that the time a hydro wears out is about the time a gear drive wears out. That 544 sounds like a good fit for ya, thats a heavy tractor and well suited to hauling trees. On another note I do have an old 1973 yanmar 1500 diesel, been a little iffy on electronics as of late, but it a nice little tractor, really light only really good for a finish mower, but i keep it around.

I also used much bigger tractors than an 8N. My last was a 7740 new holland.

    Ford Ns are fun tractors but your comment proves you have never operated a modern 4 wheel drive compact utility tractor of similar weight and horsepower. They embarrass an old N on stuff like this. Heck Kubota has a front wheel turn assist available that shifts up the front wheel RPM when the steering angle is turned tight to pull the tractor around a tight turn. Ballasted up even a far lighter modern compact will skid those logs even with the old B7000 Kubota pop on chains fill the tires with rim guard and have at it.
