Poor Rabid Raccoon I Spied From My Room

- I woke up and when I looked out my window I saw a wobbly raccoon in my yard. The raccoon had spent some time in that same location. It was very lethargic and it could not walk or even move very well. In my area, rabies is very common to find in raccoons, bats, and foxes. I cannot say for certain that it was infected by rabies, but if not it was probably distemper and both are 100% fatal. It is very common for rabid animals to ack like this raccoon. Not all animals will attack you as the beaver attacked me this past summer. If a person gets rabies and begins to show symptoms, it is 99.99% fatal to us. About 59,000 people die each year of rabies. The Health Department will not test an animal unless there was some sort of contact. I know this, so just dispatched the poor critter and buried the body.

Just a very short video of a raccoon that I recently saw in my yard. It probably had rabies and I had to kill it. I do not show any violence in this video but do show how animals can act when they are infected with rabies. Please don't try to "rescue" wild animals (or dogs and cats) that act like this. Call Animal Control.
Glad you didn't get snagged by this one buddy. It's unfortunate you had to put him down but it was for the best
At least you were there to put it out of it's misery Mr Beau.
You did what was right. Im a hunter and I respect your respect for animals that need help.
That's a very important video Chigg be safe !! I appreciate your compassion.
Many people don't understand rabies or how to recognize it! I had to have the rabies series after an encounter with a bat. I hope you and your wife she being a Veterinarian have had prophylactic rabies series and your pets have had rabies shots. It's one thing I don't mess around with
Never feel bad about putting an animal out of its misery...... having your brain eaten by a disease has to be one of the most terrible things for anything to experience. YOU PROVIDED A MERCY, for that poor raccoon.
It's a shame it still is not legal to do the same to a human with a life-ending disease - with no hope of recovery. But we have to fade away slowly, in distress.
According to the news covid is worse lol
@@deadfishtellnotales Most people survive covid, with cold to flu like symptoms. The unlucky ones who do pass usually suffocate from the fluid buildup in their lungs. Now IF they had gotten the Proper drugs/treatment they would more than likely make a full recovery. My cousin ( a young health lady ) & another person I know did pass from this. But I believe did not get the proper medicine ( you know of which I speak ).
@@Jane_Dow yes I know, the stupid thing to me is they freak over covid. God forbid cwd made the jump from deer to humans. It would be a zombie apocalypse
@@deadfishtellnotales Tell me about it. Ever get the feeling someone ( or someones ) wants to be rid of us !?!
Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. And the little guy didn't need to suffer anymore. Sad, but a reality of life. I'm so thankful that I have never once, in my 64 yrs, encountered a rabid animal. I have come across many animals in the forests of North Idaho, so it's been a blessing not to have had to dispatch anything so far. Thanks for helping this little guy out and helping to protect your own pets at the same time.
That's cool you live in North Idaho I live in Southern Idaho and I have a UA-cam channel on gold prospecting you should definitely check it out always love seeing other Idaho folks on UA-cam
@@buffalokrisgoldprospecting I'd like to check out your channel on gold prospecting! I've just been getting interested in learning about it. I'm in NW Oregon.
Where in ID? I live in Spokane
it takes a good man to do the hard things that need to be done
Amen brother
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Thank you for helping him. It's so much better that he didn't have to suffer.
I’m a huge animal lover which is why I believe you did the right thing. I honestly can’t understand why people think leaving an animal to suffer is better than ending it’s suffering in a quick and humane way.
I'm so sorry you had to deal with this. Keep a sharp eye for others, raccoons are community animals, they usually roam in family units. You may see others that are effected. Thank you for being merciful.
It's definitely unfortunate but you saved the little guy a whole lot of pain and suffering
Wow, so sad. I've seen this too & they usually die within hours. They're also often very emaciated. Regardless, this poor thing won't likely last another cold winter night. Kind & quick is best, but heart-wrenching all the same.
You did the best thing for the poor guy and any other wildlife. Thanks for humanely putting him down and protecting other wildlife from getting sick.
Thanks for your love for animals. Putting him down was for the best and at least the last words he heard were kind ones from you.
We get distemper around here in the fox and raccoon when the population gets to big. You did a good thing taking care of it .
Chigg,
We had a rabid raccoon in our driveway and called the township.
Two guys came with a shovel and a big garage can, picked up the Raccoon on the shovel
and dumped it in the can.
That's the last I saw of it...R.I.P. Rocky!
Cheers,
Rik
I'm sorry for you to wake up to a situation like that. Never easy to do but glad to see you made the video. I've seen your love for nature and wildlife mixed in with the knowledge you share of my area and others. You helped this little guy and thousands of other critters by doing what you had to do. Like the encounter with angry beaver, I can tell it bothers you. Even after taking a bite out of the chigg cheek I could tell you wished you didn't have to be that guy. Besides the incredible amount of history, science, and all around good vibe your videos put out. It's nice to see someone have the heart to help one help thousands.
poor guy. What a tough act of kindness on your part.
It’s the humane thing to do Beau. Distemper kills too! Sorry you had to start your day that way! Hope the rest of the day is much better. Make sure no pets or animals can get to it!!♥️♥️♥️
Awww..I'm sorry you had to do this, poor little fella. You did the right thing. You not only put him out of his misery but you may have saved any animal that would have potentially caught it. God bless you🥰🇺🇸
Aww, man I hate too see that but I've once found myself in that situation. I was sick in bed years ago with the flu. My wife woke me and said that there was a racoon in our yard that was rolling around on the ground like he was drunk. Our neighbors dogs were inside an enclosure only feet away from the coon. They were barking at it, but the coon paid no attention. I had to dispatch him with my .22 rifle. I made it quick and I'm sure he never felt any pain.
The poor fellow was really sick.. I have never seen one 'locked up' as immobile as that one was. Best to help along the inevitable, and not let him suffer, and worse, spread the disease.
I'm so happy that rabies no longer exists in my country. I'll hate to see animals suffer like that. You did the right thing.
Once I got in a car crash right at midnight on new years eve in missouri on my way to work. I still made it to work late and finished my shift as an overnight security guard. After my shift was over I walked around town in a bad mood until I came across a racoon wandering in the middle of the street. Didn't take me long to notice it was blind as a bat and could barely stand. I carefully nudged it off the road with my foot so it wouldn't get hit and called animal control. The guy told me it had distemper and I watched him try to catch that racoon for half an hour on a incline, it was hilarious. In the end he got it and told me the protocol was to put it down. Totally forgot about that until seeing this video.
Poor little guy. You just reminded me that I need to get my dogs and cats in for their annual shots ❤️
Definitely the merciful thing to do...good form there Chigg and I know you have a heart for all forms of critters! Stay warm and healthy my friend! Mike in sunny warm Florida
Poor little dude. Thanks for helping him.
I like balcony's and it looks like you got a humdinger. Good hearing from you winter time kinda slow I'm planning my spring garden
I found a raccoon hanging on a wire fence in the field next to my home years ago, I thought it was dead and then it moved. I threw it a hot dog to see what it would do and eventually it slowly got down and ate it and went away. The next day she showed up at my back door with 4 babies and ate my cat food! She wasn't dead she was tired and hungry from just giving birth. She brought her babies back regularly for a few months and didn't bother my cat or the garbage or anything and I got some wonderful pictures and memories. I already know! I shouldn't have done that, it could have had distemper or rabies - but I'm so glad I did!
I have always noticed how kind you are to animals...as you were with this poor guy.
Rabies has been very widespread in coastal Maine for some time now, too.
Glad you were there to care for him...
You did the right thing brother it's always hard having to kill I know it sucks but you definitely did the right thing God bless you
A tough call, sleep easy my friend. All the best, Michael.
Poor little guy, breaks my heart to see a animal suffer, you did the right thing. 👍
Mr chigger... Thanks for all your posts I enjoy them... I had an issue with a raccoon that was a friendly yard animal that came and went with it's family for 3 years then two days ago something broke in it's brain apparently rabies or distemper like you said... One day it was perfectly fine next day it went after me.... It also destroyed everything that was human and our Lanai and screen porch .... so pissed off....
Since I have two dogs and six cats I had to take care of it... I keep justifying what I had to do but it still sucks.
Do a show on that.... distemper n rabies, how they get it, how they react... is there anything a person can do about it ...
Take care and be safe...
Good job - and a revealing look into the Chig.
God bless. So grateful for the educational content you provide in so many ways.
I’m so glad you are educated!! It’s never pretty when they are sick
It's harder to kill a friend than an enemy.
Sad but the correct thing to do. The poor guy was suffering and a danger to any animal or human.
Thanks for posting this as it may help someone from making the mistake of trying to help an animal in similar condition.
Man, shoulda of said "look at the flowers"...
You did the best thing for him. The raccoon was really sick. I am glad you were able to put him down so he did not suffer or infect any other animals.
Bless you Chigg. That animal was suffering and it looked like it suffered long enough.
Seems like you're running to a lot of rabid animals lately. 🤔😁
Sometimes you have to do what needs to be done.
You Sir, eased that critter's pain. Sometimes I think we treat our pets and wildlife like this one you showed more humane than our elderly loved ones. Yes Sir, you eased his pain.
I always watch you out in the field, so this is so unreal with you at home, ha.
Poor raccoon. I saw a medical video of an Indian man with rabies, and it was so sad and bizarre to see him turn away from a glass of water in fear. Rabies is no joke.
Someone ran over a cat in front of my house and they didn't stop and it didn't immediately kill it. It was seizing and flopping around. I had to make my kids go inside bc it was so hard to watch, but I had to put it down. Hardest thing I've done, but sometimes it's the right thing to do to stop their suffering. THANK YOU for helping this baby.
Oh me Chigg at least it’s not suffering anymore you done the right I’d done myself cause I can’t stand to watch anything as far as that goes to suffer. You done the right thing Chigg GOD BLESS
That was so sad. But, thank you because I know what to look for. It's not just the froth on the mouth.
You are a good man Beu.
Had I been a wild animal walloing like this poor fellow I would have liked someone to pull the plug as cleanly as you did.
Thank you for letting that poor thing not have to suffer anymore. Kathy
I was waiting for the " Ready ? Hold your breath ." Not pleasant but you did the right thing by him .
You dim a solid, put an end to the misery. you're the good guy Chig
At least it’s not suffering anymore. Stay blessed @Beau!!
Another reason to put him down is to keep him from spreading to other raccoons. Later, other coons would check him out and when they get close, he would likely freak out and scratch or bite, spreading it farther.
Well, it is what it is. You kept it from suffering anymore. I, like you have had my rabies vaccination. Scary stuff man.
You did the right thing. Mother Nature can be cruel. Kudos for being merciful.
We had one once that walked in circles. Bizarre look in its eyes, it just kept walking in circles. Wildlife told us there are some types of worms they can get that literally eats their brains. So poor thing had to be put down. Glad you did the necessary though; I can assure you it was not enjoying life.
Thought you learned your lesson I would know what to do!
My bad I didn't wash the full video before I made a comment. Good job man.
much respect and admiration for you my friend.
I think its distemper, a lot more common than rabies.
It's funny how so many people are telling you what to do or giving advice when you literally have a channel teaching people about things you do or come in contact with.... like you did in this video.
Jason from MD here.
Long time watcher.
Poor 'Coonie. Never a nice scene to see.
Good job chigg are we going to see anymore videos of you out west
He wont suffer anymore! That's a way of life for critters! God Bless!😘
Your a good Man, Chigg.
It is tough, but you didn't have a choice! Thank you!
That was the best thing you can do in that situation, You also Protected Your Critters and other wild animals from getting the disease
totally the right approach regret and kindness without better options much respect
Poor guy! Thank you for handling the situation though; that's no way to live...😞
Thank you for doing the right thing. That has to be a miserable state. Much better off and no longer a danger.
I was fishing a couple of years ago and saw a raccoon acting crazy and actually coming at me aggressively. I was on a wildlife refuge and called a game warden. He dispatched it and verified later to me that it did indeed have rabies.
Thanks Beau for putting the poor thing out of its misery. You gotta protect other animals and people as well.👋👍
There was one just like this at my parents house a few years ago leaning against the garage door out in the middle of the day. We called the game commission. They said to shoot it and bury it, so we did. It seems like we get spurts of it here. Around that same time my junior high history teacher's daughter got bit by a fox that he killed and they confirmed had rabies. A woman that worked with my wife got bit by a coyote outside a nursing home around then too. They never captured it, she had to go through treatments for rabies even though they weren't sure she had it.
Thank you for putting that poor thing out of its misery. You did the most humane thing you could possibly do for it.
Rabies is a long and miserable death sentence, the kindest thing you can do at that point is just put them out of their misery.
Little guy just looking stunned out of his mind near the water's edge pretty much makes me think definitely rabies. They can't even swallow water at that point of the disease and makes them think they're going to choke out even looking at water.
:( Poor little guy. At least he won't suffer longer.
This reminds me of a bizarre scene I witnessed on my way to work. There was a raccoon in the middle of the road, balanced strangely on the center line. It was standing on all four legs, on it's tip toes, very unnaturally and it was not moving. There was a lot of traffic and I was so shocked by this scene that I kept driving. The strangest part was when I looked back in my side mirror and witnessed some person kicking that raccoon off the road like it was a football. I could see this raccoon, cartwheeling as it sailed through the air. It was "funny" and horrible at the same time. I have no idea if they felt they were doing a good or bad thing. I read that this phenomena of zombie raccoons was due to distemper which affects their nervous system. I'm sorry you had to put down the poor critter as I know you and your wife like all creatures great and small. You were right to do it before it tangled with your own pets.
Same thing in my yard almost two years ago. About 9 a.m. I found a raccoon by our bottom deck, had labored breathing, stumbling, uncoordinated movements, almost seemed like he could barely move or he just didn't want to do anything. I can still see the look in the poor guys eyes - pain and suffering, very sad and hopeless. I was thinking rabies or he'd been bit by a copperhead, but either way, I had to dispatch him. I felt horrible but he truly looked like he was suffering.
Humor is the best medicine and I felt better after I found out that my neighbor across the street called my wife to see if she was okay. Her son saw me go around to the back yard with a pistol, heard a shot and then saw me grabbing a shovel out of my shop. On second thought, it's kind of morbid that I found humor in it. 😅
I totally get it .. I agree not the way one wants to start their day... Thanks for sharing
you are a gentle soul brother
Poor baby. So glad you didn’t let it keep suffering, thank you
2 years ago I had a raccoon in my yard that appeared to have a back problem or at least that's what we thought. I had to call the police because you can't shoot a rifle on Long Island. The Cop came and called emergency services who was going to shoot it. Before the ES came the Raccoon crawled off my property into State Land so the Police Left. Seeing this video makes me wonder if that Raccoon had rabies.
It's never fun to have to take care of a problem like this. Most people may never understand the importance, benefit and the prevention of other animals falling victim to these illnesses. I must say, well done.
We had a rabid possum in our front yard a couple of years ago. I watched it go round in circles for about 10-minutes before making the decision to end its suffering. Poor thing was definitely not right...
its extremely rare possums get rabies , he may have gotten into warferin or some other rodent poison, either way you did the right thing
@@hiredgun7186 - Yeah, I debated on it. When he started to fall over and struggle to get up and then when he did get up, he'd just keep going in tight circles, that's when I decided it was for the best...
Looks like distemper. Sometimes racoon can survive distemper, but are severely disabled by it. Mostly motor function. I had a rabid raccoon outside the door before and had to shoot it. Called the Pennsylvania game warden and they told me to throw it away in the trash. I thought that was stupid. I don't want the bag ripping risking infection to the trash man or any other scavengers that could get to it. I threw it in a bag too it out to the middle of no where, dug a hole, put it in the hole filled it up sticking flagstone in it. Then covered it with every thorn bush I could find in the area. Only thing I didnt like was burring a plastic bag.
Good man chigg. Sad but has to be done.
Well done Chigg.
You did the right thing. Way to many people just ignore injured animals in the wild or at the side of the road. Not funny to put the poor thing down, but he's better off now. Thanks!
It's sad that you had to do this, but you ended his suffering.
Dude !!!! I don't blame you a bit... don't let him get around the pets or neighbors dog.
Bust a cap in him triple trash bag and of to the county to be tested..... better safe than sorry especially after the last ordeal... Thanx Chigg for being on Rabie patrol see ya on the next
Thanks Chigg
There's two kinds of rabies. #1 is like that raccoon and #2 is like a rabid beaver biting you in the ass. Joking aside you did the right thing. It's crazy how prevalent rabies is. I had to put down a skunk from it here I missouri.
Oh man Beau, that's really bad that you keep coming across these rabid animals
CHIG, YOU ARE A HUMANITARIAN!!! You see good in everyone but when no cure for the sickness......... dispatch it! Your 100% right in this decision! Thank goodness.
Good educational video Chigg just like the beaver vidieo
Sadly the only way to know if it is rabies - dumb rabies or salivating type - is testing its brain with your vet’s help and the city lab can run. It is a free test in Texas. You did the right thing. Thank you for ending the animal’s misery. 👍🏻DD
Don't worry, he knows. Beau was bitten by a rabid beaver a few months ago and had to kill it, as well as taking more vaccinations.
Would love to see you go to cerro gordo in CA
I knew a guy that worked security at a local college and he to remove a rabid raccoon from the property, he didn’t get bit but got saliva on him and had to get a series of rabies shots, I heard they poke you in the stomach with like 13 different shots, idk if that’s true but gives me reason enough to avoid any animal that appears rabid, poor little thing.
Thank God Chigg's immunity should be solid after going through the rabies shots this past summer. Now that was a scary video, Chigg being chased by that beaver!!
The 13 shots in the stomach thing is wrong, it's one of those tall tales used to scare people. They're deltoid shots, four of them on separate days for unvaccinated, two of them for already vaccinated, five for unvaccinated immunocompromised, as per CDC guidlines.
@@donnawelborn-dicus8953 I forgot about that lol, bit him in the buttocks didn’t it? Yeah maybe he has developed a immunity, Super Chigg🦝🇺🇸
No they don't it's quite easy to go through the process
@@sabinekine2737 well thanks for correcting me and I wonder why my last comment disappeared lol, UA-cam is just being silly now
Unfortunate! Thanks for the education on this other potential reaction to rabies.
Thank you for your mercy.
That's so sad well you have to put him away I'll see you on your next one don't get bit we know what happened last time👍
aquachigger, what is, in your opinion, your best metal detecting find?
