I use the Lee universal decapping die before I wet tumble all my brass. If I use the standard sizing die to decap dirty brass, the die gets loaded up with dirt.
a huge aspect as well, is, When using range brass, or unknown brass.. many people these days choose to use a heavy primer sealer.. and that will break a lot of decapping pins.. and its wiser to use a universal de-capper- with after market strong decapper inserts.. soo its also wise, to get on Ebay and order the after market decapper pins.. i have broken several Lee pins , on the strange brass that the former shooter used a super glue primer sealer..
noob question alert: Let's say we've decapped all our brass with a decapping die. When you go to size it through the FL die, is there anything special you have to do to the FL die? Can you even separate the decapping pin from the expander in your FL die? Or do you just go through the motion and allow the decapping pin to penetrate the open hole (essentially doing nothing)?
If you are reloading your own spent cartridges don't resize them. They will fit back into the chamber anyway and the brass will last longer without the extra reshaping.
Per Erik Cortina to add in another stroke of the press just to decap the primer is a waste. The pros u desribe dont actually do anything per the internet videos ive seen
I just bought the Mighty Armory decapper with a spring assist that pops them out with some gusto. The pins can be changed for large and small.

I wet tumble.
Prewash to get the loose grime off. Decap, then tumble with pins, process as normal. Hands and dies stay much cleaner.

If you use the expander ball on the decapping rod to resize the inside of the neck, then leave it in, but aside from that, you can take it out.

I keep breaking the pin on my Lyman Universal decapper ? Reloading .38s at the moment .
