The UOC Doctoral School organized this initial stage in which the doctoral student to go through to the final was selected. It consisted of a qualifying stage, which took place on 14 May 2018 in a single, open and public session in the room -1A at the Castelldefels building (Parc Mediterrani de la Tecnologia, Edifici B3, Av. Carl Friedrich Gauss, 5, 08860 Castelldefels, Barcelona) with the option to participate online. The presentations were given in Catalan, Spanish or English.
