Prior to the Pacific tectonic plates raising up the rocky mtns, western states use to be under water so alot of coral reef exists all over the rockies as a result. In AZ you can find Opalized Coral Reef at the top of the Mogollon Rim on the Colorado Plateau, the highest levels in our state....awesome vid! I said all that to say Coral Reef formations can sometimes look exactly like petrified wood. Except Coral Reef will have 'siliconization' all over or pushed thru or extruded thru or throughout the specimen, verses a tree rings pattern....make sense?
On a previous video where you were digging a large agate I was going to suggest you get a Estwing Paleopick. I see you have it for this video, a new one at that, hardly used. I never go anywhere without mine. /Lou from Emmett, ID
Yep, I know. I learned a long time ago when I gave out the coordinates of where I found cool rocks, asking for just a quick trip report of what they found, I never received that reciprocity. It's not that I'm not willing to share where I find good spots to fish, rockhound or hike, it the selfishness of the assclowns that can't be bothered to be part of a friendly community.
I would assume far western Idaho, near the Oregon border. I was lucky enough to stumble across a deposit of dark brown/black wood-replacement opal like this once, and it was in that general area. But it was a total lucky accident- and that's the point. I don't think you can pinpoint any exact geographic coordinates, rather you go to an area, and wander around and hope you find something. It's common opal, so, no "Fire" and thus not particularly valuable, but it does make for some pretty specimens, which, even when "rough," can look like caramel or milk chocolate with a slight glassy sheen.
Friend . . . Please narrate your videos instead of being silent and playing music. I like your videos. I just wish that you would fill in the blanks with your voice. ?
Awesome find!.. just mind blowing! Love those purple flowers too. Thanks for sharing.✌
It would be nice to see a video showing what they specimens look like when cleaned and/or prepared. Any chance of that ?

There is an opalite pit near Ashland I have dug at. Poor quality but makes nice trim for the rose garden..!!
