  • A methodical way of taking practical steps toward your goals that explains how you unintentionally self-sabotage yourself.
    I detail a system that divides the two parts of your mind: the planner or "strategist" and the "performer" who executes your plan.

    In this video, I discuss the pre-execution jitters and nerves that often come with preparing for a performance. I emphasize the importance of understanding that everything feels overwhelming at this stage and that it's normal to feel nervous. The objective of this video is to provide you with the tools and mindset needed to take action despite these feelings. I also touch on the concept of splitting the mind into a strategist side and a performer side, and how creating simple rules can help you navigate through the challenges of execution. Watch this video to gain insights on managing performance nerves and executing your plans effectively.

      Get feedback early and often. This way when you inevitably re-edit your work, it’ll already include the inevitable feedback.
      Also: ‘completed’ beats ‘perfect’

      Perhaps you can use the Nanowrimo approach. Allow yourself to be messy and then set up a time for editing after you're done creating the initial draft.

    Critical action: get out of bed right away, without snoozing
    Simple rule: turn on the lights and drink water as soon as the alarm rings to trigger the right behavior (getting up)
    I'll try this out and see if it works. Thank you!

    Hi James, I really like how you give practical examples of how you've implemented the "simple rule" system (e.g open a blank word doc.... etc). At 25:31 you mention that you had a worksheet/cheatsheet for this system. However I can't find it in the description of your video or any of the modules in momentum society. Is this for a particular reason or am I just blind ? :))). If you could let me know, that would be great. Thanks - Hugo Edit: Never-mind I realise the worksheet is in the knowledge to action course which is paid XD . Thanks for reading

    Use not buying sugar products rule too! My brother uses another simple strategy for weight loss: he tries not to drink tea because it makes him want sweets :)) He also eats only three times a day, no snacks. If he wants smth in between he drinks water.

    • @James_Lim
      @James_Lim  Місяць тому +2

      Yes! Love that you use the sugar rule too. And fantastic example with the tea rule. Recognising the resultant behaviour of an action takes this to the next level.

    Hi! Just a question. What do you think about setting SMART goals vs creating simple rules?

    • @James_Lim
      @James_Lim  Місяць тому +2

      Good question! I like the concept of smart goals. The problem I observe when people try to implement them is that even the process of developing a smart goal can be too much for someone when they are already emotionally saturated. (they are already looking for ways to avoid tackling it) going through the smart process and evaluating each step for meeting the criteria can feel like additional work. The simple rule concept bakes a lot of the "smart" ness into it without it feeling like too much work focusing on reducing complexity which is the primary objective when someone is emotionally saturated.
      Ideally, you want a smart goal, combined with a simple rule to start executing it. the combination is ideal, but in practise people don't often get around to setting it up this way.

    How do your clients remember the simple rules at the jump point? Do they repeat them out loud until they absorb them? Do they use visual aids?

    • @James_Lim
      @James_Lim  Місяць тому +2

      Good question! Similar to the simple rules themselves, I have found the solution is quite unique to each client. We are looking for the most "sticky" ways to remember. You covered the main ones. The methods I see work the best are:
      1. Repeat out loud, like you say. If the simple rule is concise enough, this should be quite easy to do. It is more foolproof because you always have your voice with you at the jump point; reciting even in your mind helps, but take it seriously; sometimes raising your voice/shouting to yourself works!
      2. Visual aids: I see lots of variations based on what is likely to work with the person. It needs to be stimulating enough (doesn't blend into the background) while being convenient (so you don't miss it or leave the aid behind). Solutions I've seen for this are post-it notes or mini posters stuck on the front of whatever you need the simple rule for. (The example I have in my mind is on the fridge for someone stopping their evening snacking!)
      3. Automations: auto alerts and notifications via calendar apps, alarms, and emails at certain times. This is more complicated to set up, and by it's nature I have found to be less reliable. it has worked particularly well for clients who already use a lot of automations in their life, personally or through work.
      Hope that helps!

    Have you had some tips on a problem with breaking simple rule and not able to come back to it? I had a perfect simple rule “no gadjects in hands when I cross doorway to a sleeping room”. Worked perfectly for some time - a month or so, then I broke it and can’t go back to that decision :(

    • @James_Lim
      @James_Lim  Місяць тому

      Yes sure, I see this quite a lot. One problem with a simple rule that gets broken is for that period of time, it is no longer effective, like police/security tape barriers that someone has broken, once you break it, that becomes ok. You might need a reset. What I suggest is to create an entirely new rule that has a similar effect. Get the ball rolling again, and then at some point you can re-introduce the old rule if you want as if it was new!

    • @user-zd2jl1ys9i
      @user-zd2jl1ys9i Місяць тому

      @@James_Lim thank you, will try to figure out different one! gosh, it’s so satisfying that you understand what I’m talking about 😂
      Talked about it in another (good!) planning community in my native language and they just didn’t get it. They were like “it’s a habit, it’s okay to fail, try once over”, but the idea is not the same. I think, simple rules are not like some complicated habits, they work on different principles… it either works great or not at all :)
