You should make a video teaching others how to make instructional videos! Thank you for the short, sweet and to the point instructional! Keep up the good work!
Heh, I picked up another little trick for my self watching your video. I have three outboards. a 4 hp Johnson 2 stroke, a 9.9 fuel injected Suzuki, and a 9.8 Tohatsu. I just a beginner with repairs on outboards. But recently I replaced the impeller and housing for the water pump on the 2 stroke. When I went to put the drive shaft and lower unit back together I had some trouble getting the splines on the upper part of the drive shaft to mate with the gear box on the lower end of the engine. Now that I see what you do I can’t wait to try this trick you introduced me to. “Put the lower unit into reverse before installing...”. That way you can manipulate the splines to mate. That was very cool. Thanks again...
Wow! As others have said, you have a gift for teaching or at least instructional videos! Great job, very detailed. I think my 9 year old son could follow this and change an impeller. Lol. thanks for uploading
Thanks for taking the time to make this. Very clear and easy to follow. You forgot step 1- Scrape off barnacles and oysters so I can locate the lower unit. Hopefully a family of crabs aren't living in the impeller housing!
Great video. Only thing is you didn't mention if it matters which way you turn the drive shaft when reassembling the impeller into the water pump housing.
Thank you too much. I've got same model outboard and i was thinking about replacing impeller how can i do this job. Your video explains everything very well. Thanks a lot and hi from Turkiye...
@@afabre93 Look at the direction the fins are (memoried) or note the direction the the pump impeller shaft rotates when , while the lower end is in gear (forward or reverse) turn the flywheel by hand or with the pull cord and see which way the "drive rod" (that the water impeller is seated on) turns. Be sure to turn the drive shaft in the same direction it was turning when the starter rope was pulled a bit or by turning the prop (shifted into reverse) a bit while fitting the lower unit up into the upper engine housing to get the impeller "fins" sitting in the correct direction.
Fun fact..... This "Mercury" motor is actually a Tohatsu. Made in Japan. They are bullet proof, and do a great job of protecting themselves from their owners with over rev and low oil protection. Happy boating!
You did a great job but I have to point out a couple of important errors. It is Very Important to rotate the drive shaft in the "correct direction" while replacing on the housing @ 6:27 or you will destroy your new impeller. Also, Do Not use petroleum-based grease on Rubber Parts @ 7:08 as it will break down rubber over time - use Silicone Grease on Rubber parts. Small details - what Make/Year/Hp of outboard? How did you get to the shift linkage?
I noticed that as well. No mention of following the direction of the flywheel, either clock wise or counter clock wise before seating the impeller. Very important that the blades sweep instead of scoop....
Hi thank you for your instructive videos. I have a mercury 9.9 4t . I realized that there are numbers 1-2-3-4 on each bolt that connect the lower leg to the upper unit. I suppose that these numbers define the sequence that I should follow in operating the bolts. But I could not find any answer to the question " should I follow the sequence 1-2-3-4 in loosening or tightening the bolts ? " I appreciate your advise. Thanks
You forgot to mention to turn the drive shaft clockwise. Also Marine grease on the driveshaft splines as well as the impeller and the water pipe connector going to the motor make everything go smoothly.
great video on changing waterpump I own 1999 Mercury 15hp manual start. Quite on me out in ocean - thank heavens for fellow boater who towed me in. Tried rope starting when floating around waiting for the tow but the engine would not turn over I followed your video but the water pump is fine. When I removed rope start housing I am able to rotate the fly wheel nut with a wrench but only goes 3/4 of a complete circle at which point it binds. Your thoughts? Sam
Your old impeller wings will be angled one direction or the other. During disassembly, take note of that direction and ensure the new one goes on with the same directional bias.
Not sure If you will see this but it dosen't really matter as long as it's in the same gear when putting the lower unit back on as when you take it off
NOTICE : When removing the water pump housing, remove the screws completely, then pull it up. If the impeller is a little tight and is pulled out while the screws are present, the gasket is attached to the screw threads, and the impeller blades that are opened are caught and torn off.
I am not having a question on this exactly but...I started my engine a couple days after using her for several hours and I just made sure she started because she died in the water from swells cutting off power. Anyway, I put in forward and reverse only for a moment and shut her off. Now she is not starting at all. Not even idle for a second just barely after letting sit over night did I get a little smoke come out 1st pull and a attemp to start like the sound the 3rd pull now nothing is happening again. Any tips?
My doesn't want to pee anything. Suggestions? I noticed before I was to changing oil on my Honda 20hp. I warmed up my oil by running it in water but no water peeped out. Clogged maybe?
So the impellers find their own way when it spins I'm imagining.....I thought they had to be put in the direction of the clock or wise spin of the drive rod. so the shifting rod adjustment is critical. explanation
I’ve got a 3.5 Mercury four stroke with Neutral and Forward only. I replaced my impeller and lined everything up as shown in the video but my motor will not shift into forward for some reason? Any ideas?
One thing I haven’t been able to figure out is I have had to replace my 3 times.I have a 2015 Honda 9.9.when I take it apart it’s looks like the housing got melted a little.I never run it dry and the prongs are dry and broke off,I have never had the problem with any other motors I have owned.
Could be the water jacket on the left side might be clogged up. Also check the small hoses for blockage. Check out the thermostat to make sure that it's operating correctly by removing it and drop it in some boiling water.
No, not if you install a new impeller, however, if you reinstall the old impeller then you would want to have the fins slightly bent back away from the direction of rotation.
What happens if my prop only turns one way and when I turn it, there appears to be a clicking noise. I obviously did something wrong, but what causes the clicking noise. Thx in advance!
I have a question about the water tube coming up from the pump, if I have water coming out the tell tale, tells me the pump is working, but the issue I’m having is water coming from between the upper and lower parts of the body ,coming out near the area in the vicinity of the shift rod, so do I have a thermostat issue and water is backing up , maybe coming out of the water supply tube or is the tube broken?. Unit worked well prior to last season and I didn’t change anything yet. Thanks
@@AaronTBR hey I just bought a implellar kit.
