1918 Pilot Black Dial - unique, fun, and beautifully made
This is a special addition to my recently started collection, and my first hand-wound mechanical movement. I was immediately captured and motivated to purchase by the tilted dial geometry, and the historical style. A new piece that looks, and authentically works like it came from more than a century past. Understanding that it isn't intended to work like a modern quartz or hackable automatic is a significant aspect of enjoying it.
The purchase process was straightforward, and worked well, and Judy was very informative and helpful. When the watch arrived, it was in pristine condition, and every bit as good, if not better than the pictures or video reviews. The case, dial, and handset are beautiful, and something unique compared to the usual types of watches commonly available. The leather bund strap is supple and comfortable, high quality, and well made. It is thinner than I expected, which actually helps not add bulk and height on-wrist. I have an ~8" wrist, and use the 2nd to last pinhole, so it should fit most, but something to be aware of. The only down-side to the strap is that it is a slight task to unthread the point strap from the bund to view the movement through the case back, so that view might be less often enjoyed than it should be, but removing the bund pad, or using a different zero-pass or two-piece fixed-lug compatible strap that doesn't cover the back might be an option, but the watch looks great worn on the bund. I have been wearing it for over a week and am enjoying it more and more, especially that it is distinctly different than my other watches. Definitely something I plan to enjoy in frequent rotation, and keep long term or permanently.

The non hacking actually feels very period aporopriate for a ww1 style watch, given the big fuss we make about hacking being an important feature of ww2 watches.

I bought one of these in black with the dark brown leather strap a few months ago. It’s beautiful, and something very different. Highly recommend.

Hi Barry, it doesn't make sense to me. If you fly with your right hand on the stick there's no advantage with the offset dial. If you fly with a yolk you'll probably be using your left hand, with your right on the throttle. Again, I can't see the advantage. So: the dial offset is a novelty, a talking point.
In other respects the watch is OK, and I like what they've done with the movement.
At this price point I'd just as soon have a Laco Flieger Basic, frankly.

I see where your coming from Bob but turns out companies like Longines rotated their dial by to the right 40° also, based on specifications from the U.S. military back in 1935 🤔
@@ClickSpringReview OK, good point, but it would drive me nuts, frankly. The trouble is that an aircraft could have a yolk or stick control with the "handle" design and orientation varying considerably. The aircraft could be intended for flying with the right or left hand, so a standardised watch orientation only makes sense if intended for one specific way of controlling the aircraft, or if the cockpit is so tight a fit that there isn't space to orientate your arm to read a conventional watch display.
Thats a fair comment as I started watching videos last night of guys piloting their planes, but I would say it works perfectly for when your driving :)

Not for me unfortunately. Looks rather odd, being offset. Also me being a lefty, I wear my watch on my right wrist, so I would imagine most lefties would be ruled out, unless they wear their watches on their left wrist.
I never thought of that as I own many lefty watches (crown pushers on left side) but they are designed to be wound on the left hand so they don't get caught of gloves or a boiler suit
