Love this. There is nothing more magnificent than a huge pipe organ in a cathedral. Diana is an organ player extraordinaire.

I was part of an international choir fest in Freiburg back in 1969. I was 17. I walked around the Munster many times, but never went inside. My mistake. The reverberation time inside is seven seconds. And, Diane Bish can play those multiple organs from that central console like nobody else. I wish I could go back there and hear those organs firsthand.

I saw Ms. Bish in concert once. She used the en chamade trumpet on half the pieces on the program (I'm not exaggerating). I love her moxy. As an organist, her artistic choices are not always my cup of tea, but her technique is absolutely flawless. Her enthusiasm brings people to the organ who would otherwise not hear it. She is truly an icon. This is a wonderful interpretation.

Marvelous piece! Reminds me of my childhood & youth- as it was used rather frequently as the recessional/postlude for church. It was always great to wake anyone up who may have been tired, bored or distracted, or who may have dosed off a bit (that was definitely me...)
I've heard this played many ways on a number of organs. While this organist is obviously quite accomplished and very technically skilled, I don't think I've ever heard a more bored rendition of this! I can't really put my finger on it- in summary, it all sounds the same. I'm accustomed to hearing contrasts in sounds/tones/pipes used, as well as volume & tempo to some extent. And while it appeared that she was doing those things, I wouldn't have noticed or been sure with audio only.
There could be a number of good explanations for this... And while her performance was delightful, somehow the resulting audio recording just didn't impress or move me at all.
One aspect was that the venue (Church) was too large creating too much & too long reverb which killed the crisp, clear distinction of notes I'm used to hearing. For example you can't even hear the trills at all...

I simply just love how Diane plays the organ. With such perfection. I have seen many of the videos, and I can't stop choosing the very next video, everytime. Also the way she uses the organ. Not only does she play low tunes, but fears not using high tunes aswell! I hope someday I will be able to play such masterpieces, when i learn to play the organ properly. Good day to you out there and much love to Diane's work!

The cathedral known as Freiburg Münster has four separate organs as Diane Bish has described -- and all four can be played from a single master console. The master console Ms. Bish is playing in this video was the third one of those, installed in 1965. It was replaced in 1987 and again in 2013, so it's not the one in use today. I note that the four organs have quite a history -- they were all redone completely in the 1960's, and one of them (the choir organ which can only be played from the master console) was reconfigured in 1990 when the pipes were moved across the apse or choir to an arch opposite where it was originally and installed in a new case. So this recording was made, I believe, in the latter 1980's, no later than 1986 or possibly 1987, because the master console was changed in 1987. I note that the master console is on the floor of the cathedral, toward the front of the apse, about three steps above the floor where the congregation sits.

Oh, yes. I participated in an international choir fest in Freiburg in August 1969. I walked around the Munster every day and occasionally bought fruit. I never heard the organ(s). My loss. Well done, Diane.
