I remember my teacher being flabbergasted in like 6th-7th grade. I wasnt THAT good at english, but above average, but i knew the straaangest words, some very complex. Because i liked video games. This was 30-35 years ago though, so it wasnt normal... English is such an important language to know, but i agree, it's impressive when people teach themselves a language and she was definitely very good at it. I think actually a lot of schools will soon start teaching English already in the 1st grade here in Denmark.

I've been fortunate enough to experience this firsthand and it never gets old. It's SO fun to astonish people that way. They usually love it!! And you have some really interesting conversations. Very few non-Americans expect people from the USA to speak other languages at all, much less speak them well. Languages are so fun!!! Being bilingual or a polyglot opens the world up; it brings people together.

yes, same! its how they teach language in school sometime, in my spanish and japanese class it taught mainly words and basic sentences but not sentences structure to combine the words we learned into actually usesble conversation sentences.
Wtf? That's so weird. Spanish isn't too difficult, pronunciation specifically (you can know how to pronounce a word just by the way it's written). Grammar can be complicated, but not too much imo. I don't get why they would teach spanish like that instead of teaching basic grammar at least.
