I am currently listening to " Apache - steel guitar " on my 1978 home made speakers. They each contain one 15 inch woofer, two mid-range drivers, and four tweeters. I did have to eventually replace the outer foam rings on the woofers due to the rubber foam having turned to dust. That cost me a whopping 27 dollars and several hours of work. But then they were back to being as good as new. The front panels are black, but that too had faded. I finally found some black wood stain and re-stained them. Now they look as good as the day i made them. Everyone who has heard them asked me to build them a pair. I also just brought my 1978 Soundcraftsmen PE-2217 equalizer back to proper performance. The 20 Faders ( potentiometers ) were stiff and intermittent. But that thanks to using Deoxit and a silicon lubricant, all is brand new again.
Amazing design and finish, one of the rare projects where I thought, "I want to do that." One thing that helps when doing the CNC stack up is to model in two dowel holes. Then you can use the dowel to align everything. I was going to leave a double negative (to turn it into a positive) but you want no negative comments...
Love the " No bad Comments" Your Positivity and your style of humor and attitude towards things seem similar to mine. Keep making Great Content. Love your builds and rebuilds of other items.
although you unfortunately and definitely still have a diffraction issue because your walnut extends beyond the plane of the drivers, this is an amazing job. Having that walnut around the speakers helps deaden any cabinet resonances. Love, love, love the grill design. If you do another pair, consider using neodymium magnets to attach them. With your skills, you can recess mount those into the wood. those stands are just SICK!!! Bravo!
I hate negativity and I have to say this looks pretty awesome! I build custom subwoofer enclosures for car audio and all my boxes have beauty panels on the front to make the speakers look like they are sunken. It looks cleaner. Liked your enclosures!
Dude you KILLED it on this build. Those stands are dope af. Reminds me of the esthetics of bowers and wilkins nautilus line. Everything about these is just excellent. The design from top to bottom and the build quality. Grills were rad too.
I stick polystyrene quite a lot and I use spray adhesive. Just spray lightly from a distance on both sides and leat it sit for a minute then stick. It’s the solvent that melts the polystyrene so if you spray from 1ft or so most of it has evaporated before it hits the foam. Then once contact is made it sticks and dries instantly.
Not a negative comment! I really enjoyed this video, David. I especially liked the synthwave/vaporwave style music played in this video. Those speakers look amazing and I really like the aerodynamic pillars you made for them. 👌
Did you build the cabinet to their specs and then add to the width with the walnut? I only ask because there is something called baffle step compensation that’s accounted for in crossovers and it’s determined by baffle width as well as distance from walls and such.
Great vid fella. Only one thing to be aware of is the plastic front sheet is likely to vibrate against the plywood front facia underneath....more glue egor! Oh and you will get edge diffraction as the sound bounces off the front 'raised' edges. And one more tip, you have the cabinets rammed up against a wall so the ports cant 'breath' reducing your bass response, they need to come forward at least 50cm, preferably a good 1.5m. But, what an epic build, clearly incredibly skilled in woodwork.
Great build David. I hit the like button but I don't think that using the laser jet is cheating. Thanks for reminding us that you're human too and can make the same mistakes as us. It's no big deal and you just move on. Your rules of woodworking are awesome.
Built my own speakers back in 1978. Thet each contain one 15" woofer, two mid-range drivers, and four tweeters. Anyone who has heard them has asked me to build speakers for them. Although, I did have to replace the outer rubber foam rings on the woofers at one point, because they, due to age, had turned to dust. That cost me a whopping $27.
That TV setup in the background still amazes me. Looks so sharp! The speakers turned out great. I've always wanted to up my turntable game. Maybe one day...!
How do you measure genius. I asked my Dad’s best friend once. His name was Dr Tim Ball. He was a climatologist and highly intelligent. He told me that true genius came from the ability to communicate with anyone at their level. You do this. You have a building with every component.. tool to make things seem effortless in execution. As most geniuses go… I applaud you in your abilities. Very impressive. Truly.
Hello, my friend, I'm building a box and I have a question about the passive crossover. In this case it's a three-way passive crossover..., and I'd like to know how many speakers I can connect where it says "woofer". Another question is..., how many crossovers can I connect to the output?
Bro, I have the Samsung MX-F730 mini-system and I want to make an adaptation, use the speakers and just put them in a little box on the PC table to make it more compact and have a nice sound... do you think it can be done? I'm from Brazil (São Paulo) and I really liked your video
"Just like your mom". You're killing it, David. Love these jokes sprinkled in. (And snicker at them in the podcast too) Fabulous edits, and a gorgeous build!
It was an incredible job... All I can do is admire and drool... because to accomplish such a feat, a lot of expensive equipment is needed, which unfortunately a very small portion of people here in Brazil have access to.
Sticking EPS foam together ? - use 3M77 - although it's a contact adhesive, you really don't need to coat both sides - just spray one and stick them together, been doing that since Pontius was a pilate 🙂 You can use it for your veneers too 🙂
@@MakeSomething No, use it all the time to stick models made of depron together (eps foam sheet) - not cheap, but lasts a long time - great graphics adhesive too.
I have KEF speakers which are absolutely amazing. On my third set. But this is wanting too make my own, just so I can show them off. I’m anxious about the stands. My stands have 4 spikes in the bottom to keep bass from traveling or whatever that word is. You can tell I paused to write this, now back to the show
Liked and subscribed. Glad the algorithms brought your channel up . Always been my dream to get raw drivers and build my own enclosures . Maybe someday
I like the way you thought (and shared) your way through this. Also, the TV window is really a great background. That has proven to be a better workshop add than i thoughtvitvwould be. 10/10.
These turned out 🤌🏽. Smart design, too, since the sound will bend around the base instead of smash into it. I was surprised there was no mom joke in the welding section. 😊
Don't take this negative, but you forgot to round the cutouts for the speakers on the inside. This can cause frictions in the frequency response. But I must admit, these speakers looking neat.
hi there; i have a logitech z906 5.1 sound sistem and i have a plan, the plan is to use the z906 hardware to bult a hifi sound bar including the bass and all 5 speaker and control panel. what do u think about this, can i transform the z906 to a amateur hifi?
a couple things... I am totally going to try and build some speakers soon and 2. Thanks for introducing me to the Hives... I had never heard of them before. They remind me of Radio Moscow, check them out if you haven't heard of them.
Back when you were rocking your ball caps with the tag on them still lol.... I was building competition level sub boxes and door speaker enclosures (speaker cloth and fiberglass resin and cloth- maybe you can use that somewhere down the line ??) HUGE audiofile and listening to you with Klipsch speakers which are absolutely my favorite i've ever heard but HATE the factory shelf liner looking exterior . Already had plans of using some Osage Orange to wrap around the existing speakers but definitely borrowing the old guitar amp speaker cloth idea ! Being from that era and amps and guitars on my walls , it's absolutely bad ass Dave ! don't know how they sound but they look awesome , including the bent veneer and foam ! You are goofy as hell in a good way tho ....😂
Fantastic build! You will enjoy the hell out of those speakers. Good job on raising the drivers with the gasket material. However not negative but just so you know you will still be getting some defraction from the walnut front edge that protrudes passed the front baffle. I know probably not a big deal but you know Audiophile 😃🔈👍🏻
David, I paused the video at minute 17 to give my like. 👍 I also don't like people who say, instead of doing. That is why my comments are short and to the point. I don't appreciate long-winded comments. If you have something to write, just write it. Here I just want to state my appreciation to your video, I don't want to waste your time by making you read an unnecessarily long comment. Thanks for the cool video! 😊
BRRROOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! This looks incredible!! Can’t wait to see the cabinet build - well done man! Also, the humor and editing in this video is top notch. You’re hitting on all cylinders, my man!
the acrylic looks really cool. the grill also brilliant. the grills do much less harm than people think (when accounted fo in the crossover), BUT since im here for the negative comments: HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU, but the outer dimensions of the baffle (and diffractions) is much more important than sticking to the inner dimensions. KUDOS for listening to albums... bet half of your viewers don't know what an album is.
You are so freaking inspiring! Makes me want to get out in the shop and make something! loved the Edit and your shop is fun quirky spot unlike any other woodshop! loveyoubye!
Dave, those look great~! I really like the ad lib with the covers on the uprights of the speaker stands. Those turned out great. Not a criticism, but when you showed the final pic, I thought that it would look good if the grills were mirror images of each other. Just my $0.02 worth. Speakers are something I've always wanted to tackle. Maybe one day. Nicely done~!!

I've been building speakers for 30 years. For your first time at it, you did really well!!!
what would you have done differently?
The production of the video was as amazing as the speaker stands. They look incredible!

My favorite video yet! I will never make a set of speakers, but loved watching you do it!
Your editing is getting sharper and funnier every video. Love it!
What a nice work! That a nice finishing in every single detail of the project! Congratulations!
CSS audio speakers are great and SUPER easy to wire and build. 100% recommend. CSS was my first DIY speaker build.
Big thumbs up for The Hives! saw them years ago as an opening act and they were better than the headliner. I have been a fan ever since
Love the " No bad Comments"

It’s a thing I made.

I am so very impressed. Great job. You have an artistic sense and the common sense to pull them off.
For future reference, Liquid Nails makes a foam-specific glue that won't melt the foam and will give excellent, quick adhesion.
Man, the foam insulation with veneer, the dowel as trim, love it all!

mine kind of adjusting accordingly past ambient pro, but yeah wont be far, very close most likely

I feel like this is one of the first time you've shown your metal work. Good job!! Cool to see how you do that too.
This project turned out really well, the stands perhaps even better than the speakers (aesthetically speaking)!
Ooh and thanks for using the laser, now I feel more at home again! 👌👌👌

Nice, I got a few great tips today, absolutely love the little Dachshund, put more of it in your videos.
