How To Succeed In Your Music Career (and why it sucks)

  • A successful music career is something that a lot of people want - everyone would love to become a superstar musician. Because everyone wants it, the competition in the music industry is higher than most other fields...
    That means that, if you want to succeed as a musician, you will have to do things that most other people are not willing to do. In this video, I go over the math behind creating an exponential growth curve and why the surest way to succeed is to be more than willing to do things that kinda... well, that kinda suck.

    I stopped making my own music and just collaborated with others in 2014 - 2021, after streaming obliterated my entire game plan. I suspect I wasn't alone in this. I was ultimately idealistic and unwilling to do the shit work. Then, my song was placed in Walking Dead (S10xE21). That 2012 song (which of course i loved and was proud of) sat dormant for nearly 10 years. It went from 0 listens for a full 2 years to full explosion. I tried to make the most of it's success by firing back up my business attempts, but ultimately, I went in the wrong direction. I just didn't know what I was doing. I kept songwriting through these dormant period, as songwriting is totally easy and joyous for me (I suspect this is the same for you too?). I'm now in the process of a total rebrand. I went into the studio (for drums) and got 22 songs started. I'm doing almost everythign myself and I am an INDIE now. I'm happy I found the indepreneur pro plan, and I'm hoping that I can get to the point (sooner rather than later) where I can make my re-brand a reality. I'm in the middle of my training.
    I don't know why I'm writing here. Perhaps because I just felt amongst friends here - in this quest - to carve my notch in stone that I offered something worthwhile to this planet; that my life has meaning beyond my personal satisfaction; and hopefully connect with others on a deeper level.

    I haven't put out any music for a year, I just haven't had any motivation for a long time. However I recently started listening to the audiobook "The War of Art" by Stephen Pressfield. In his book he talks about what he refers to as the "Resistance", a force inside you that makes you put off doing the things you want to do creatively. It was really making me look at everything a different way. Then this video popped up in my notifications and it couldnt have been better timing. Synchronicity even. Thanks for this video.

      @@musicmarketing Between this video and just the first chapter of the War of Art, I feel like finally see things from a different perspective. I already paid for the Fan Finder course a couple years ago but I never implemented what I learned. I have been writing and making beats for 20 years and I have something like 50 fully written songs ready to record (not to mention 70+ half written ones) i feel like I can actually get somewhere if I strategically plan out the releases.

    • @musicmarketing
      @musicmarketing  10 місяців тому +2

      There are tons of music marketing "agencies" out there who will do the "suck" for you, but consider this...
      If an agency claims to be willing to take responsibility for your growth when you're starting from near zero, how much do you think they care about their reputation or your experience as a customer?
      We have a music marketing agency, but we turn down over 99% of those who apply. Why? Because we take ownership of the success of our clients - financially and otherwise. Even if they have the money, if they're just starting out, they are overwhelmingly likely to lose money by hiring us - they wont make enough to pay our agency fee. We don't want our agency to be an organization that has the net effect of being financially detrimental to our clients.
      Music marketing agencies who will take your $250-$500 to run an "Ad campaign" or a "playlist run" without knowing anything about you as an artist and without any minimum acceptance criteria are probably unscrupulous. Because they don't know anything about you as an artist, they have no idea how successful they can be in helping you. In this case, they are far less likely to provide a service that has any short term or, even more likely, long term value for you.
      If you don't already have a large fan base, you should learn to fish - you shouldn't pay for fish.

    • @user-jr3he8ys4r
      @user-jr3he8ys4r 10 місяців тому

      Point well taken. But, if we put this in different context, perhaps it may offer an alternate perspective... If I've saved enough hard-earned pennies for a vacation to Hawaii, then there's really no reason to ALSO have to learn to fly the airplane to get there. There are pilots & companies who offer this service for a fee for their expertise. In an attempt to be brief & remain productive, I understand the suggestion, "you should learn to fish - you shouldn't pay for fish". But, that logic can sometimes actually be extremely counterproductive, as you may perish in the interim while "LEARNING to fish"... Aren't there any Indiepreneur Graduates or another legitimate service(s) that can help get the ball rolling through the entry-level "suck"? @@musicmarketing
