  • Getting more tasks accomplished on our off grid Alaskan homestead while we wait for concrete delivery for the pole barn posts. We construct the outhouse we had hoped we'd build last summer and set up new solar panels to help power our equipment. With a little trepidation, Carlan picked up a small chainsaw and got to work thinning re-prod around camp. Beautiful days building the life we are closer and closer to living! Enjoying the wind, the birds, the sun and the rain in this wilderness we can't wait to call home.

    The land looks so much brighter now that you've cleared it some. This job will take a long time but it will be so worth it. Cute outhouse. Great job to both. Love and be safe!😘🌻VE

    Nice paint job! I'd look into a larger solar system. Outback brand is good.. get a Flex max 80, a 48 volt inverter and some Chinese 48volt batteries. You can add up to 3600 watts of panels and charge your batteries off your generator. That way you'll have much more capability.

    Long cold dark walk in the winter. I remember it well. I was 12 years old before we had indoor plumbing. I can imagine that it would be worse in Alaska. You might invest in a chamber pot for the just in case moments like -30 below. That can freeze off body parts.

      Thank goodness for headlamps and little buddy heaters! 😅 My grandparents worked a fire lookout with a long, long precipitous walk to the outhouse. Especially sketchy in thunderstorms! They used milk cartons at night, lol! 😂

    When I was a kid we did not have indoor plumbing. Grandpa dug a new hole and moved the outhouse every spring. Filling up the old hole with the dirt from the new hole. You placed the outhouse pretty close to your tent. But luckily it is on skids and can be moved to a location further awy in the future. Thanks for sharing.

      Yes! The outhouse is in a temporary spot. Both the pole barn and our future log cabin will be away from this spot, thankfully. 😁

    The smaller saws are very dangerous, cutting shrubbery makes that even more so. Plant your feet before every cut! Be careful, don't hurry and rest when you get tired! Be safe!

    Here we call them dunnies..or long drops 😂. A good solution for odour control is a cup of lime spread after solids. Sawdust is also useful but you may need a little more. Lime will help better with fly control if that an issue there.

      @awildalaskalife  5 днів тому

      Great tips! We have been using fire ash. Flies aren't too bad here, thankfully. 😁

    Don't forget a vent (PVC Pipe or so) from the waste cavity up above the roof - otherwise the smell inside will be overwhelming

    What is the reference to "reprod"? Google gave me an off-topic definition🤔😵‍💫

    • @awildalaskalife
      @awildalaskalife  7 днів тому +1

      Sorry! 😅 It stands for reproduction, meaning little saplings/young trees that have grown up in thickets after a fire, or logging. It could be trees that were planted, or those that gave come up naturally.

    A newbie and no chainsaw PPE? C'mon...always wear ear protection, chaps or protective pants designed for chainsaw users and gloves. Please use proper gear when using potentially dangerous equipment. Especially for someone with zero experience. Just a heads up on your outhouse...you want it as far away from your living area as possible. The smell and insects that are drawn to it will be overwhelmingly offensive. Ask me how I know lol.

    • @awildalaskalife
      @awildalaskalife  7 днів тому +1

      Good tips! 😅 Yeah, outhouses can be a little too close! We left it on the sled so we can move it when we know more where permanent structures will be. Chaps are in the future for both of us! 😅
