Great video Kevin, I'm trying to restore and polish a stainless resturant prep table, I started sanding with a random orbital sander, but there seems to be a coating and even the 80 grit does not seem to take it off. Any suggestions? Thanks
I always love a good mystery! Maybe you have a clear-coat on the stainless.. I would try a propane torch or whatever you have on hand and just try heating a little corner to see if it bubbles up. Or maybe a heat-gun instead. That's about all I got. Please let me know what you do to get this off. I have never heard of a coating like this. Thank you for watching and posting.,
Many engineers name that 'dual action' 'planetary gearing,' because it is like a planet around a sun, going around the sun and itself. As an artist, one could sand one piece of a sculpture to a certain grit, like 80 or 220, then other pieces to high grits, say 1600, then finer into the 1000s, creating a sense of color/texture in the final sculpture. Yet a question. If you made one of your sculptures with stainless steel polished to a mirror finish, then left it outdoors, how long would the mirror finish last when exposed to weather, in a climate such as St. Louis, MO, or Kansas City? Thanks for the tips.
With the proper care, cleaning and coating with a stainless polish the shine should last for 20 years minimum. If you polish it to a mirror and then use an auto clear coat it should outlast all of us!
I have 304 stainless steel angle and its surface is very dull and gray. Would this sanding also work on 304 SS angle surface? thanks for the video. cool
Hi Kevin, greetings , video is informative , I wanna know can we grind stainless steel roller of my machine without giving them for grinding as I m using these rollers for making metal strip and don't wanna send them for grinding instead wanna find a way to polish them on machine itself , thnx for ur help in advance

I have a water distiller and it's used 4 times a day for 2 years now! Mill finished look. But I wanna sand lightly with Die grinder on slow with wet and dry! Then polish! Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia. Subbed and liked 🙂👍👍👍
Not sure the die grinder is the correct tool but what the heck, go for it! I use grits up to 800 and then go to scotchbrite. After that I get to the steel wool.
@@KevincaronSculpture I was gonna use 1000 rpm and put sandpaper attachments and work until I get a polish job, lithe maybe start with 200 mininim, 320 grit , 600, 1500 and last 3000 grit? Hi Kevin, greetings from Perth. That was really interesting. I am curious as to what sort of paper you are using. Is it a "metal only" paper or a "general " paper of some sort? Would using a paper made for timber be a waste of time? Thanks so much for your advice.
Need to get to your part of Aus. some day! Had a wonderful 2 weeks in Sydney and Melbourne a couple of years ago. The paper I am using is general use paper from Home Depot. It seems to work well on most of everything I work with. The stainless does eat it up the quickest of all.
@@KevincaronSculpture Hi Kevin, McMaster sells some DA discs built for stainless steel and hard metals. They are about a buck a piece and well worth the cost. Love your videos man, keep it up! Cheers!
Great vid. Thanks! Quick search: most dual-actions that I'm seeing are pneumatic ... electric are only rare/sketchy brands. Have you actual seen a good electric?
They're called random orbit sanders and they're widely available. You can't switch between the two modes like on Kevin's, but you probably wouldn't do that much anyway.
Ya, if you're a hobbyist then the DA/Bauer 22mm throw is actually a good one. If you go to the "detailing" guys on YT you can find lots of reviews and comparisons for the Bauer and others, for both hobbyists and for professionals.
@@KevincaronSculpture Series 200/300 Electropolish solution is 75% sulfuric acid, 25% phosphoric acid, and if that wasn't bad enough, it produces toxic metal salts as hazardous waste, specifically chromium salts. Electropolishing increases stainless's corrosion inhibition well beyond passivation, and smooths the surface layer so finely, it reduces where bacteria can hide, and is required for most food-related stainless equipment. My company does it in Kansas City.

Nice. Show us the polishing part. Using a buffer? Compounds?
No compounds, just different grits on the wheel.

We often use this technique prior to anodizing which leaves a matte finish on aluminum.
