amen! so few people in your circle will give 2 shits about the watch you're wearing. my friend regularly talks about his kenneth cole watch and how cool it is while im wearing a bb58 no once cares but you. buy with your heart!
Not quite the same as I’m comparing my Planet Ocean with my Sub. Personally, I think the Omega comes out on top. Rolex however no longer exists for me though. As I can’t find an AD that deems me”worthy” of retail, they can seriously keep them. This is not just sour grapes either. When the same watch can differ in price so much purely because of its colour, I really don’t wish to be part of the same club. Snobbish maybe, but every “kid doing well” has a bloody Rolex. From builder to Bar Mitzvah boy. I for one will not fall for the hype. I think IWC is calling me loud and clear
I think it’s more an issue w dealers than the brand itself. Having said that, as much as I respect the Rolex product, I find their designs stale and on the gaudy side. And I like ornamentation, an open dial; etc, but there’s something about trying to be “toolish” and luxury at the same time that just doesn’t appeal to my aesthetic sensibilities. Not too crazy about this seamaster either, but like the seamaster vintage 300. My favorite diver is the unloved aquatimer w a blue dial or the JLC Polaris mariner memovox (cheaper than a hulk). I guess deep down I’m just turned off by Rolex’s ubiquity.
@Riki P. it’s no coincidence that if you ask someone who understands absolutely nothing about “ luxury” watches, the first name they come up with is Rolex. Ask an aficionado of watches, Rolex will be half way down their list. Apart from being treated with contempt by an AD aka, shop assistant, when fools started paying a premium because of a COLOUR, that was my time to close the door on Rolex
I feel the same as you guys. I just sold my only Rolex in the collection (gray/rhodium OP). I was trying to get an explorer at an AD for the longest time and I think it's ridiculous how Rolex are treating not only new potential buyers but existing owners. Currently Zenith, IWC, Moser, JLC, and Omega have my curiosity piqued.
What on earth is artificial about the shortage?..it’s a simple matter of supply and demand. There’s no reason why Rolex should have to expand production to meet demand. It’s not that long ago that you could walk into a dealer and walk out with a Sub. If there are rude, staff at AD’s that’s inexcusable and unacceptable but there are also plenty of people who are just unhappy that they can’t have immediate gratification, and have to blame someone and vent their frustration on someone..
@@markpass4215 simple matter of demand and supply forces, yes. But the way the small supply is distributed is not so simple, is it. Unhappy about not receiving immediate retail gratification is different to being unhappy and frustrated about being humoured by being put on an imaginary customer waiting list😡
One perk of wearing an Omega over a Rolex: no one is going to look at your wrist and immediately assume you're a douchebag. I love many of the Rolex models, but there certainly is a stigma to the brand.
Stigma:a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person You cannot get a steel sports at an AD anywhere in the world and you pay double on the grey market. Sounds to me the opposite of a stigma.
@@davidr2802 Thanks, Merriam-Webster. I'd say being perceived as a materialistic prick flaunting his wealth would absolutely fall within that definition. Again, I have nothing against Rolex watches or the people who wear them, but you're lying to yourself if you don't think Rolex's often attract the wrong kind of attention.
@@_MAKB is that entirely true, though? I know that's something we like to tell ourselves to feel special; like we're these bold unique individuals, unaffected by outside influence. But if we were, we probably wouldn't be watching a video about two mass produced, overpriced luxury watch brands that spend millions of dollars a year on marketing, now would we?
I bought a PO since I like that design over the SMP, also slightly better mvnt. Mine is normally within +1 s/d. I think the sub is a great watch, but why I prefer Omega is: Domed crystal with AR No cyclops transparent case back Price Availability
Maybe the 8800 has a newer design, but I have never heard it is a better movement, smaller though so it fits in the SMP, while the flagship diver PO has the 8900 with twin barrels and a longer power reserve.
@@stefanpersson240 it's a bigger movement so it is used on the bigger models. The smaller PO uses the 8800. Regardless, the 8900 is not a better movement than the 8800.
@@Kaiju007 It’s rediculous to think that Omega is using a bigger but worse movement just because the case is bigger. I don’t think neither of us has any proof of which movement is better but the reason of two barrels is to get a more even tourqe release.
I really really love the compact look of the sub. It's thin; it's less bulky. The bracelet is damn too good But the Seamaster has been improved a lot over the years. I love the waves on the ceramic dial, the skeleton hands, the indices, the movement. However, if I have to pick one, I'd go for the Omega
Great review Bruce. I found myself wanting a black Submariner no-date. I almost picked up a 2021 pre-owned. Instead, for the same price I picked up three 2021 AD purchased Omega's (pre-owned, mint). The white Seamaster, the green Aqua Terra, and the hesalite Speedmaster (previous generation). SOOO Happy I went in that direction.
You bought an all you need watch collection in one buy. These three watches will never let you down. And every day you can choose between three perfect watches! Great choice !
I've never seen such a horribly offensive and biased review! (HAAAA!) Great Job! Anyway, as of this writing, I'm waiting on my first Planet Ocean. Rolex? Forget it. Not worth the price IMHO and the snobbery around them (not necessarily from an owner's perspective but more from the marketing perspective angle) is a turn off. Would I like one? Hell yeah, but there's a threshold that has been crossed here for me. I look at it like I looked at Harley's a bit more than 20 years ago, when folks were waiting 14+ months for that Heritage Softail they wanted and paid a premium for it. Not worth the wait and not worth the price when there are other alternatives out there that from a functionality perspective, are just as good. Just my $.02.
I have had the good fortune to have owned both; different models of both too. I agree with you Bruce, the Submariner is a better watch for the reasons you list. That said, Rolex and their ADs have made it a negative experience, so reward Omega and buy a Seamaster Professional - I doubt you’ll regret it.
Option for someone who has 10K to spend. Forget the Submariner altogether, get a Seamaster 300M and the Tudor BB58. Then go to Vegas and enjoy the $1500 you STILL haven't spent.
I don’t see point of comparing them at this moment. Sub is at least 3 times the price (black)of Seamaster if you take into consideration 20% discount for Omega and buying Sub in gray market. Unless you make tons of money or love the Sub alone I see no point on choosing it right now,. Just get the Omega and saved money spend on GMT2 for example or for Patek or anything.
I actually really like the bracelet and find it comfortable. On the fly adjustments is a great improvement too. I do prefer a taper but have gotten used to it.
@@Tennisfiles I have the blue Seamaster and I love the bracelet for the reasons you stated. If I ever got the white one to go along with the blue, I'd get it on the black strap. It's a great strap and goes better aesthetically with the white dial.
Rolex: The Beanie Baby of higher end watches. Omega, Grand Seiko, Breitling, etc. as good or better mechanically and in modern and heritage designs. And you can get them. No offense, Bruce, but you're only a Rolex snob because you have one. (Hope I didn't offend you . . . ) PS -- I do enjoy the heck out of your videos. Keep 'em coming.
Imaginary waiting list, can't even go into a rolflex boutique without waiting in an Imaginary waiting line (here in korea), every wonnabe rich guy either flexes an imitation rolly or a homage, a lot of other brands that sell divers look exactly like the sub! Whereas, the SMP is a watch that not too many know about other than the watch enthusiasts'. Wearing an SMP, I feel more exclusive and original!
No offense taken. Both great watches. I absolutely love my blue dial SMP. It goes with me running, to the gym, everywhere. That being said, I'm still excited for when (and if, LOLOL) my SD43 ever comes in. However, this isn't quite an apples to apples comparison. Your Hulk is a unique Sub, I think a better comparison would be the black dial Sub to the black dial SMP. Just my opinion. Great video. You and Oisin are the two best watch UA-camrs out there,
For me I just don’t think the sub is worth the premium and the fact that if you actually want one you are spending an even bigger grey market premium. And I just think the Air King is one of the best daily watches and it’s not as much as the sub and not as common. But the seamaster will be my pick I think omega are on par with Rolex at the moment. Anyway great review Bruce.
Wanted a Seamaster 300M for 25 years, finally got it last part of last year. Never wanted a Sub. Got offered a no-date Sub from an AD a few months ago. I politely turned it down because I had never showed interest in it and never asked him for it. He was shocked I turned it down. I only have a set amount of money I'm willing to spend on my overall collection. I won't buy a watch I don't want.
I have also owned both. I now own only the Omega. If I could get a new Rolex two tone blue dial cereramic, I would probably get it, but I don’t see ever flipping my SMP!
What you call a dated look, I call a timeless design that has stood the test of time throughout several generations. There is a reason why the sub design is the default divewatch design that has been copied countless times over and over again
I think the sub is one of the most classic looking watches throughout history, almost timeless. The total opposite of dated…… in 30 years today’s sub will look similar, god knows that the Seamaster will look like. But that’s the very definition of dated.
Dated look don’t see that , classically beautiful . Own both and feel there’s no question the sub is a much better piece, it’s just a step up . Given the price difference it should be to.
Omega use silicon balance spring and balance wheel, Rolex does not to my knowledge. Though I am sure Rolex must have at least ISO 6425 antimagnetic rating, it’s not going to withstand 15K gauss like the Seamaster
@@aemiliusaugustus7814 Rolex does use a silicone hair spring called Syloxi hairspring in calibre 2236 which can be found in ladies Date Just. I think all watch internals should be amagnetic to reach 15000 gauss antimagnetism.
@@watchroll3310 Rolex has been using "Superlative Chronometer" on their watches since 1957. I don't think they'll ever switch to METAS. Tudor on the other hand has more flexibility to use METAS.
Having owned both, I won’t disagree with a lot of your points. However The Rolex only seems 1 notch better because it’s so exclusive. But it all counts. However I will disagree about the Tudor comparison, they definitely look and feel lower level than omega to me. I’ve owned two bbs and a bb gmt.
They're both great watches, anyone would be very fortunate to have either and you are twice as lucky to have both. Personally, when it comes to a luxury purchase you should never settle. Get what you like and love what you have.
i now have, in 2021, both a Sub date and the Omega Seamaster 300M Black dial. I have been wanting a Rolex Submariner for 30 years and finally pulled the trigger. I am not disappointed, but I think I built up the Sub to a much higher expectation than it deserves. Now having owned the Omega for 6 months and the Sub for about 6 weeks, I feel like they both are very different watches yet designed for the same thing. I have always liked the sub and the fact that it has stayed true to its original design. It is smaller, lighter, and thinner than I expected. I was expecting to put on a tank watch and honestly it feels a bit dainty compared to the solid feel of the Omega Seamaster. I will say, I love the sub with the oyster bracelet. That makes the watch. I purchased the SMP on a bracelet and then bought the rubber strap. The SMP bracelet is very sturdy, but a bit outdated for me. Much like the jubilee bracelet. In fact, if the sub came with a jubilee, I would not have liked it. It would takeaway from the tool/masculine sport look. The sub on a rubber strap looks ridiculous with the block case. The SMP on the rubber strap looks and feels incredible. A truly cool tool/masculine dress up or down sport watch. Bottom line, I have always wanted both and now I have both. I will say if I could do it all over again, I would just purchase the SMP and I would be happy for the next 20 years. The problem is I have the bug of watch collecting and now have the resources to enjoy it. The good thing is, you don't lose money on a Rolex. I never plan on selling my SMP, but may move on my Sub to try the Rolex Explorer II 2021 version and the GMT Batman someday. . Pound for pound the SMP holds its' own and has a lot more technology and features. AR coating is a big difference. It makes the wave dial look awesome and very visible. The non-cyclops date at the bottom almost unnoticed allows for better symmetry. The accuracy on both of my watches is +1 seconds so that is the same. The co-axial has a much longer service length and it is only $500 to service an Omega vs $1100 for a Rolex after 5-7 years. I love all of these comparisons, but I will say I get many more compliments on my Omega. True watch enthusiasts seem to know Omega while everyone else wonders if your Rolex is real. The Rolex mainstream branding is a blessing and a curse. I love them both and thankful I get to enjoy both. Thanks for the review.
Great video Bruce , Your opinion are quite valid largely because you own both watches and you are sharing your candid opinion about how you feel . I own both watches as well except my omega dial is blue . Love them both but I just the sub a bit more .
I had the same debate with myself recently and went with the SMP white dial. The Rolex sub is a classic but the SMP is a more interesting dial and I prefer the bigger size for wrist presence. I genuinely think the SD43 is the diver to have from Rolex. The Sub is just too small and plain. Even at retail its a hard push for me to justify the price. To clarify, I do like the sub, I just find it overrated and overhyped but each to their own!
totally agree, Sub just looks tad too small on y wrist, so I bought white SMP. I also like divers with decent wrist presence, hence have a PO. When comparing value proposition PO vs Seadweller, it's hard to beat PO
Price & availability is Omega’s biggest plus point by far. In your example of having $10k to spend, you’re realistically looking at a Submariner vs a Seamaster AND a Speedmaster!
Not anymore. Omega changed their dealer margins. Discounts will be smaller and further inbetween. I wonder if or how long it takes for the omega fanboys to complain and say Omega be playin games like Rolex
Bruce, Im having a situation with my Omega smp 300 diver, it is running +9 secs a day, I bought brand new. Do you think this 8800s have a time to "settle down"? And It will back to a METAS standards? Or I bought a lemon? Highly appreciated Bruce.
Ignoring brand equity and price difference, I'd find myself wanting a christopher ward diver rather than the SM 300. It is just that bit less flashy, and comes with better sizing options. That's a side by side I'd like to see you do Bruce
On the SMP 300 Omega is holding on to: The odd helium release crown. The unusual bracelet that 1/2 people dislike. (Everyone likes the oyster bracelet) The skeleton hands. And even the wave dial. Not everyone likes. Things that the Planet Ocean gets right.
Bruce you're the man. always enjoy your videos love that you DGAF about the trolls and are true to yourself. great photography and discussion for two watches i will probably never own haha
Spot on. Random Rob was your AD. Their are almost no discounts on the white dial. The great white tend be discontinued after 2 to 3 years. The reissued with model change. Sometimes the skip a model. Omega will discontinue when they issue white dial on vintage revival 300.
Great honest video mate, I think they are both beautiful watch, having owned both. I honestly prefer the seamaster, it’s a fantastic watch and it looks more up to date, maybe I’m just a bit fed up with the same old looks of the sub , also I believe the seamaster is superior technically, although I’m not an expert. Love the fact that the dial will look the same in 50 years, the Rolex will show signs of age maybe 🤔. Rolex is classic yes but for me just a bit dated. Still love them both though 👍🏻😊
I prefer the Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage over the Professional due to the solid handset myself. Still, all 3 of them are great ( and out of my range😆).
😂😂😂 great "unbiased" video. The way you laughed and said no way not gonna happen about taking money into an AD and can't even get a sub was epically douchebag worthy. Hope that was done on purpose 😂. I wanted a Sub at the beginning of my journey, but now, give me a Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date any day of the week, over these 2 watches. I'd take a Tudor Pelagos over the Sub. Now that's a tool watch IMHO.
I have a collection of Subs, and have no Seasmasters, I’ve toyed with the idea, but never bought one. The greatest factor for me when it comes to the Seamaster Diver 300, is there is a colour and strap combo for everyone. When I eventually do buy one, I’ll buy the blue dial, on a rubber strap.
Great video. Nice that you can give us your honest view on both of them. Much more valuable than most comparisons on UA-cam. Could do without that dubstep outro though, if I'm being honest
I own a rolex batman and a seamaster planet ocean and both are great. I wouldn’t want to give up either. I think the Omega is more technically interesting because of METAS and also the see through case back. I love the helium escape valve on the omega too. But there’s nothing more accurate than a Rolex besides quartz it’s unbelievable. Mine is +.1/.2 s/d it’s unreal.
Great video Bruce and very balanced. I'm not triggered (though maybe my comment could trigger others?) but I don't like either of them. For Rolex, aside from the fact I won't queue up for a restaurant, I certainly won't for a watch, two things. 1. The cyclops is an ugly unnecessary wart on the crystal, the worst design idea in horological history. 2. It's a mass produced fashion watch a million plus per year, made by robots, it's Daniel Wellington, on steroids (as I read on a recent comment). I'm impressed though, that a brand name that sounds like a roll-on deodorant is so successful. 😉 For Omega, though a better design in my opinion the HEV is an old and unnecessary design that should have been incorporated into the case years ago. I spent €9,900 of my hard earned money on a Grand Seiko Spring Drive piece, individually hand crafted and the ‐/± 1 second per day of these two is not something to write home about in comparison to my watch, which registers 0 spd, every day, in every position. The number of GS SD watches produced every year is in the low 10's of thousands, not millions. As far as the type of watch, being honest there are far nicer, equally good quality and reliable dive watches out there than these two. Both are underwhelming and overpriced. People criticise fashion watches from DW, Tommy Hilfiger, Fossil, Armani etc but that's what these two are, fashion watches worn by celebrities in order to persuade the masses to spend their money on them. You never see a Hollywood celebrity or a rapper wearing an iced up Grand Seiko, and that's perfect for me!😁
$10k? SMP and BB58 and change. I love the wave pattern and the light variability of my Blue Omega, and the Tudor love how it looks old school, but isn't. Both get wrist time and use Hamilton, Seiko and San Martin for beaters. One to do it all would be the Tudor Pelagos though, if your wrist is big enough.
Nice one Bruce, we all have opinions from our experiences from owning watches so many thanks for sharing your views with us. I can't comment on the Hulk but I can compare the 41 no date sub with the great white. The Sub is slightly more comfortable to wear and that bezel action is sublime. For readability and for me anyway the general finish there is little between the two. Availability will of course affect the price if you go gray market so as you allude to we can't compare retail prices if one of them is unobtainable to the general public. My experience with accuracy is about on par but I prefer my Omegas as they don't loose time but gain 1 - 2 seconds per day. The Sub looses ~2 seconds on the wrist per day but more in the winder box. I'm also more likely to wear the Omega on more occasions as it's not as recognizable. For what it's worth the 41mm Sub no date has AR coating on the underside. Both are great watches.
People put Rolex off because they can’t get one and that makes zero sense to me. I can’t get a Nautilus, doesn’t mean I say it’s a bad watch, or a “worse” watch than something like a Zenith Defy just because they have similar designs and the Defy is obtainable. You can disapprove of the process all you want, but the Sub is the better watch when you simply compare the two watches. The shape is more timeless, the proportions are more compact and flattering, they use better materials (platinum in bezel, white gold hands and indices, Chromalight, etc), the bracelet is much more solid and comfortable, the clasp is better-engineered, and the movement - while simple - is extremely robust. The Omega is still fantastic, especially at it’s price. The Rolex is nearly twice as expensive and is not nearly twice the watch. You get excellent finishing, a unique design with a fantastic dial, dual colored lume for legibility, a better-executed 6:00 date window (which I much prefer to 3:00), a display back, and a more technically-impressive movement. But when it comes down to actually wearing both watches, the Rolex just feels like home. It somehow feels both more substantial and solid, yet so comfortable it feels like nothing is on your wrist. As you stated, you forget it’s on…
Great video and thanks for the content. As far as your take, I've owned over 100 watches - many Rolex & Omega - including multiple of the models in your comparison, and I couldn't agree with your take more. Cheers
Owned several Rolex models with the new and old movement and also the new 2021 speedy professional sapphire sandwich and a new sea master and they were not as accurate as any of my Rolex. Nothing bad like seiko or others but after all the junk I hear from omega fan boys they just didn’t impress me.
I have both the seamaster and the submariner, and I have to say I prefer the seamaster. Although my most accurate automatic watch is my tissot seastar. Even as a budget watch, it is great to wear.
Speaking from a prospective customers POV I think both of the watches are awesome. I have stylistic differences with both of em tbh - one for the bingo Bruce - I don't like the hour hand on the Sub or the skeleton hands on the SMP lol. However the Helium escape valve and the bracelet of the SMP are bigger issues for me. Omega has the space to make a 40/42mm 200m luxury diver with a bracelet that tapers more (I'd hope for about 4mm). Rolex doesn't have that flexibility and, at least for me, it shows - the sub may be timeless but it's also not modern. Regardless of these points I'd still enjoy the hell out of either of them and hope to do so one day. Folks getting salty over opinions do need to chill out some, at least you're speaking from first hand experience. Thanks for the video and sorry for my essay.
The way I see it is like this, the Omega has more features, more availability, and is either half or 1/3 of the price of the Rolex. It also is not as blatantly obvious as the Rolex and most people are not gonna be sizing up your wealth by your watch with the Omega. However, the Rolex is thin enough that I can double as a watch for black tie, is slightly more accurate, and is one of the few watches you can take to almost any situation and it be appropriate. The Omega also will not charge you more if you want a different color option but the Rolex well. I think the omega micro adjustment and I extension are better executed in the Rolex maybe because you don’t have to remember exactly which notch you had it in when you had it sized. I think they are both gray watches, and would love to on the summer, but I do love my Seamaster.
I think that was a good, balanced review to be honest. For me, the value proposition of the Omega is hard to ignore. In other hobbies/industries, even initially comparing a $4k item to a $20k item would be absurd, and you'd frankly be seen as a mug for buying the $20k item when the $4k item gives you 90%+ of the experience. It's interesting that the 'Rolex factor' makes the comparison somehow acceptable when it comes to watches, to the extent that the $20k watch is probably seen as the sensible purchase to many. The Rolex name just counts for so much.
Salty? I came here for a salty video. Not at all salty. You're a sweetheart, Bruce. You're to much of a nice guy, with a funny hair. Not critizing the hair, just your choice of how you choose to style it 😜 And you're right, I can not buy the Sub and I'm not waiting for it. Not settling for the Seamaster, I'm enjoying it. If I could get a Sub, I would have both of these watches in the collection.
Great review. How do you decide which one to wear since you have both? It’s such a tough choice! Do you find yourself wearing one more than the other? Also Omega looks awesome on that strap.
I do enjoy these kind of verses reviews. Not quite the same, but I had an Omega moonwatch, that I really loved, but after a while I sold it and got from my AD a Rolex Explorer, the last of the 39mm. Now I really love the Explorer, its just so simple and classy, but I wish I had not let the Moonwatch go. Moral of the story, have a mixed collection of brands, and you can fulfill all you desires. Another good vid Bruce
Great video. I will probably Go with the SMP as the Rolex will be way out of reach for me. That sounds like I am settling. I am not. I truly believe the SMO is a great looking watch (I'm going blue) and I see the value proposition greater with the Omega.
So my father in law has two Rolex watches. He told me what he spent for his Sub new back in the early 90s. If you adjust for inflation he would have spent about $4600 on it today. And they are double MSRP! I get that there is demand and I LOVE the hulk and the ceramic Kermit(I saved up for years to get one but wound up getting married instead). But now I would get one
I’ve got an Omega GMT on my wrist right now and also gifted my wife with a beautiful white dial with ceramic bezel ladies 38mm Speedmaster during Mother’s Day. I don’t care about a watch maker with such attitude from their AD. I walk into a Rolex AD in Boston and while on business trip. I was stopped at the door not allowed in I I didn’t have an appointment. I was sporting a winter jacket and jeans. I should have walked in on a suit or a tux and even if allowed in not allowed to buy a watch.
I recently tried on both sub and gmt Pepsi, they felt light and small compared to my smp300. They were both older models, but i would have to compare new models I suppose.
I don’t have a Rolex but I do have a new SMP and a BB58. I feel like you do in a way haha. The black bay to me doesn’t compare to the SMP. Different strokes
Beautifully rolex the hulk is my favourite. recently brought a omega seamaster its a beautiful watch and omega is one of my favouritebrand (though that is more for the speedmaster and history of the moon watch). Is the rolex better probably although I do personally prefer the overall look of the seamaster specially the dial. For my green watch itch I have a green oris aquis.
Great video BW! My AT41 with caliber 8900 is losing about 1/10th of a second per day so far. After 12 days it’s less than half a second slow…I’m not sure any Rolex could match that accuracy.
I famously have a love/hate relationship with Rolex, and i agree completely with you on the Sub vs. Seamaster issue. The Rolex has a better presentation, but not enough to justify the price difference, IMO. I'd love to know your opinion on the Globemaster vs. the Datejust.
There is no right answer as to which one is better IMHO. I just prefer the look of the Seamaster better. I’ve owned it for 2 years now and I can honestly say it’s my favorite watch. The sub is nice but if I’m spending that money, I’m buying a JLC Polaris Mariner.
The Rolex is thinner, uses 904L steel which is softer but a bit more nicer feeling(maybe it’s just me) and better accuracy and so Rolex is better from these aspects. The Omega on the other hand is heavier and I’m not a fan of the helium escape valve. I personally own the SMP and I still like it despite these issues because I just love that white dial and it’s a treat to look at each time. Also the fact that I only paid $4300 for a brand new one at an AD also helped :P
I'm the guy similar to who you described in your video, I'm on an AD list for a Sub, I have the money but I get the feeling that I won't get the call... I made a massive error by selling my 16610 Kermit without checking the availability of the newer model. Gutted
Great comparison, Bruce. You've done one before, viewers who liked this vid should maybe check that one out as well. The black dial SMP calls to me, right or wrong I would go for that.
Great content Bruce. Where did you get the timegrapher? You should do one video on tools for collectors: water pressure testing equipment, timegrapher, demagnetizing tools, and other tools. Cheers.
Hi Bruce, good video. I did have a question though, can we see the omega on the timegrapher? The comparison seems a little biased since the same objective evidence is not presented for both watches when you discuss the accuracy. I’m looking at my first true luxury watch purchase and appreciate the comparison as they are both models to consider.
I like them both would take the SMP (gray dial version). That said, I’d take the SeaQ over either of them and the Fifty Fathoms over all. Edit - scratched/dinged? What part? On the brushed surfaces that’s a piece of cake to get rid of. You get a plastic Brillo pad and rub in the direction of the metal grain. Doing this rids your scratches meanwhile exaggerates the brushed graining making it, in my opinion, look even better than it did coming from the factory. I like to do that to all of the brushed surfaces to add some nice looking texture. You can do that over and over again as scratches occur.
Bruce, great video....I own the 126610lv and the SMP white dial. And i have to agree, the sub is so comfy it get lost on the wrist. The Seamaster is a great watch also but never feels lost on the wrist. That being said you can not go wrong.
My dad had a sub for a long time and he thinks it's a big pile of junk. He would occasionally wind it and it broke on him stopped winding and he babied it. I no longer drink the Rolex cool aid anymore either but I think they are nice watches just not sure the price and games justify what you get. Between those two I would take the Sub.
Hi Bruce, I am fortunate to be an owner of both...a black Sub (2015 model) and a grey dialed SMP on a rubber strap....and as you rightly said....both are great watches, however for the price I paid for the sub(even in 2015) as compared to the SMP (2021) the SMP stands to be a much better value for money watch......I would want to continue to own both because I believe that SPM too would jump in its value a few years from now.....purely due to the unavailability of the Sub....and till then plan to enjoy both....Great Video though.
It's like discussing Mercedes (Rolex) and BMW (Omega). Lexus is the Grand Seiko. Buy what you like and enjoy life!
amen! so few people in your circle will give 2 shits about the watch you're wearing. my friend regularly talks about his kenneth cole watch and how cool it is while im wearing a bb58 no once cares but you. buy with your heart!
Tho Mercedes and BMW are not well built and unreliable pieces of shit. Rolex, Omega and Grand Seiko aren't 😂 I get what you're saying though
Stigma:a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person
You cannot get a steel sports at an AD anywhere in the world and you pay double on the grey market.
Good thing you’re not wearing watches based on what someone else’s opinion will be of you or your watch.
Yeah I’m yet to meet a Rolex wearer who isn’t a bit of a tit. Most of The ones that post on UA-cam comments sections also seem to fit the bill too 😂👍
I bought a PO since I like that design over the SMP, also slightly better mvnt. Mine is normally within +1 s/d. I think the sub is a great watch, but why I prefer Omega is:
Domed crystal with AR
No cyclops
transparent case back
Price
Availability
The 8800 is a better movement than the 8900. The 8900 is just a METAS 8500G. While the 8800 is all new!
My SMP 300 runs +5 secs/day, my Rolex runs +5 secs/week. Rolex is a better watch. End of story.
I really really love the compact look of the sub. It's thin; it's less bulky. The bracelet is damn too good
But the Seamaster has been improved a lot over the years. I love the waves on the ceramic dial, the skeleton hands, the indices, the movement.
However, if I have to pick one, I'd go for the Omega
Hulk may be slightly thinner, but I doubt it is less bulky considering the "supercase."
Awesome pick ups!! Which one do you wear the most? :) I just have the black SMP 300M which has been great so far!
Hahaha 🤣 actually this was a funny read. You put it all into perspective!
@@Tennisfiles Thanks, tough call. They are about equal to me with the Speedmaster as my favorite by just a bit.
Well articulated. I dont think i want to be treated like some plebe when i want to buy a watch.
Lol, I'm buying neither. I'm getting a grand seiko white birch the second I can.
It’s a beautiful watch
Same here. Fantastic watch. Should Rolex do a watch anywhere near to white birch, the waiting list would be 150 years long 😂
I think the white birch is one the first wait list GS
I like the seamaster on the rubber strap. I find the sub’s boring.
Omega dont give 20% on SMP anymore, 11% if you are lucky. Only a douchebag would pay grey market price for a Sub 😂
The only thing wrong with that white seamaster is the awful bracelet. Stick it on the black rubber strap and it is pretty much perfect.
If I ever buy the white one, I would only get it on the rubber.
I own both, a Submariner Date 126610LN and a Seamaster Pro 300m in blue. They are both excellent watches. You can't go wrong with either one.
Breitling movements are utter dog shit compared to Rolex
Omega All Day !
any day of the week
Wanted a Seamaster 300M for 25 years, finally got it last part of last year. Never wanted a Sub. Got offered a no-date Sub from an AD a few months ago. I politely turned it down because I had never showed interest in it and never asked him for it. He was shocked I turned it down. I only have a set amount of money I'm willing to spend on my overall collection. I won't buy a watch I don't want.
I have also owned both. I now own only the Omega. If I could get a new Rolex two tone blue dial cereramic, I would probably get it, but I don’t see ever flipping my SMP!
That rollie would be nice but not gonna happen, at least not availabe; would go straight to the grey market as now.
Do you think Tudor compares to Omega or nah?
@@steelsteez6118 nah. Omega is better quality
Yea I disagree.
Sub has no display case back.
A flat crystal.
Long lug to lug.
A generally dated look.
And no AR coating.
47mm lug to lug, I didn’t know that was considered long!
Ehh I dunno,, Mercedes hands, flat crystal, cyclops, I just disagree…
Dated look don’t see that , classically beautiful . Own both and feel there’s no question the sub is a much better piece, it’s just a step up . Given the price difference it should be to.
I think Rolex is not antimagnetic enough to pass METAS. Other than that the video was very objective and true
If Tudor BB ceramic passed METAS, do you not think Rolex can make a watch that would pass METAS with flying colours?
@@omarion07 of course, almost any major company can make a METAS certified watch. The current submariner is just not that antimagnetic for METAS
Great video and I love both brands and I feel your video is spot on
i now have, in 2021, both a Sub date and the Omega Seamaster 300M Black dial.
@@Mint-cb2vc SMP's design isn't aging well again... its looking very much like a product stuck in the 90s...
Price & availability is Omega’s biggest plus point by far. In your example of having $10k to spend, you’re realistically looking at a Submariner vs a Seamaster AND a Speedmaster!
Exactly- this was my thoughts 💭
Not anymore. Omega changed their dealer margins. Discounts will be smaller and further inbetween. I wonder if or how long it takes for the omega fanboys to complain and say Omega be playin games like Rolex
You don’t really get a big discount from Omega dealers. May be 5-10% at best.
A slight taper bracelet, thinner clasp, shorter wart..... would give a more premium and elegant look to the omega
Bruce, Im having a situation with my Omega smp
300 diver, it is running +9 secs a day, I bought brand new.
MONTA!
On the SMP 300 Omega is holding on to:
The odd helium release crown.
The unusual bracelet that 1/2 people dislike. (Everyone likes the oyster bracelet)
The skeleton hands.
And even the wave dial. Not everyone likes.
Things that the Planet Ocean gets right.
You are technically right but some people like more the SM look than the PO. I am one of those.
The orange is a turn-off for me.
That’s why I bought a PO, but others prefer the SMP.
@@stefanpersson240 the PO is an awesome watch and nice looking but some people like more the SM. Just different taste.
Love the episode! Haters gonna hate!
Bruce you're the man. always enjoy your videos love that you DGAF about the trolls and are true to yourself. great photography and discussion for two watches i will probably never own haha
You’re not a “tool” brotha. I love your content. And I love your take on these pieces. Keep it up
“You’re biased! You have stupid hair” 🤣 🤣
After finally owning a Seamaster for 2 weeks, I am in agreement with you. I find the wearability of the Omega to rival the Sub, but on a rubber strap.
That gold Sub dumps all over the other 2 though. It's like choosing between your wife and her sister while Adriana Lima walks past!
You never see a Hollywood celebrity or a rapper wearing an iced up Grand Seiko, and that's perfect for me!😁
1:44. Nuff said. Video over.
Haha. Love the bingo reference. Really enjoyed this one thanks.
As you stated, you forget it’s on…
I had the seamaster and swapped it for the date sub, I love the sub but miss the white seamaster too. I think there’s room for both!
Great video and thanks for the content. As far as your take, I've owned over 100 watches - many Rolex & Omega - including multiple of the models in your comparison, and I couldn't agree with your take more. Cheers
Nothing is "louder" than a ceramic Rolex. The Speedy is excellent and you won't get robbed for it, or get attention you don't want.
If I had 10 large to spend, I'd buy an 017 Marine Master 300 and put 8-thou in the bank.
End of the world, money doesn't matter, and I have to pick between these exact two. I'm grabbing the Omega.
If a new black or green bezel was in the mix though, I'm grabbing one of those two.
At 7.37, didn't you buy this from Random Rob who got it from an AD (rather than you buying it from the AD yourself)?
Fun video Bruce. Loved it. The closing music was painful to listen to though.
Omega!!! 👍👍👍
Good video with valid points. P.S. I thought you bought Random Robs SMP
I just purchased the Seamaster 300 in black dial. One of my favorite pieces. So much so I want to get the blue dial next.
Both are great watches but the proportion of the Rolex is more exquisite and the styling more refined. The omega just looks a tad bit busy.
These are different enough to have both in the collection!
Well done, Bruce!
I recently tried on both sub and gmt Pepsi, they felt light and small compared to my smp300. They were both older models, but i would have to compare new models I suppose.
Great vid, The Planet Ocean seems like it would be a better comparison with the Sub
100% correct. Rolex is one level above Omega. The only people that think otherwise haven't owned enough watches from both brands.
I don’t have a Rolex but I do have a new SMP and a BB58. I feel like you do in a way haha. The black bay to me doesn’t compare to the SMP. Different strokes
All valid points but I think a more relevant comparison would be Submariner vs Seamaster 300, the heritage model
Great video, thank you. No salty comment here.
Get the black Sub Date on steel and the White Seamaster 300M on rubber strap. Best of both worlds.
I bought the Sub last year from my Vegas AD, looking into the Omega, not sure if white or black dial.
Great content Bruce. Where did you get the timegrapher? You should do one video on tools for collectors: water pressure testing equipment, timegrapher, demagnetizing tools, and other tools. Cheers.
Greatest outro music. Period
Good morning, the best your vídeo, congratulation,I am from Brasil 🇧🇷
