When I lived in Alaska, Anchorage, back in the late 70s, I was amazed with the large amount of vegetables grown when I visited the State Fair. Especially the size. I was told at the time that the Matanuska Valley had the most fertile soil due to glaciers. But I do have to commend you on your gardening. It's amazing.

Looks great, like a may garden in the states. Remember they might have as little as 1 month left before the first frost, and no later than 2.
That is because 90% of the crops showed in the video are not heat tolerant. The peppers in the video look really poor compared to what I am growing in the slightly hotter climate and they even have them in the greenhouse. I don't.

Yes alot of wonderful sunshine. Quality periodic shade provided by the grower. Many thinnings equal many baby beets yum! I can't wait to see your tunnels. I miss my greenhouse.

I live in Edmonton Canada. Suggest peppermint oil, a squirt of dishwasher liquid soap in water. Spray to kill aphids. To deter aphids spray peppermint oil in water every second day. I have had amazing success and it is not toxic to pollinators. Love your garden.
I’d think the dishwasher soap would be quite toxic? Or is it something like seventh generation?
A drop of dish soap is not toxic at all just helps make certain liquid molecules bond with water
how much peppermint oil do you go through?
I'd imagine even a 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water goes pretty fast.
A little Peppermint oil goes a long way. I add about 10 drops to 1 litre. Use about 4 to 6 fluid once per summer. Live in Edmonton, Alberta , Canada so about 3 months per year need spraying

Arielle and Eric, if I had not been watching all your videos I would have a hard time believing that you are both in Alaska. Did you ever imagine that you would be suntanned walking around in your jungle garden? I said it before and I will say it again....Congratulations!! I am so happy for you both. I know the move to Alaska was very quick but I believe it was meant to be just like all good things.
You two are really changing my views of Alaska living, the weather looks so much nicer than I had thought it would. I noticed several of your videos in winter Eric isn't even wearing gloves. Your weather doesn't seem that much different than our Vermont weather. If only my Vermont garden looked as good as your Alaskan garden - still can't believe that's even possible. Loving the video's and learning a thing or two along the way!
Funny, I came here from VT and winters here (mat-su area) aren’t any different except for less daylight and an extra month of frost risk. Same cold and snow. I was trying to escape the hot humid summer weather, which was successful for a long time, but lately it’s getting almost as bad here!

I am a farmer in Southwest Missouri and I am just totally amazed at you wonderful greenhouse!.........it's FANTASTIC!
I was told when my flowers had aphids to put banana peels under my flowers! And it worked. You could put a whole banana under each but I did not do that that. However it was amazing to go out and see a reduction in aphids! After about two weeks there were none left on my flowers.

When some of your pepper plants have played out for the season, you actually can cut them back close to the ground and keep them covered for the winter. Usually they will come back the second year and produce double what they produced this season. I appreciate both of you for supporting one another in your journey together. What a blessing.

Inside a greenhouse I know for sure.
I had a pepper in a pot that I thought I had dug out & stored the pot in the garage for the winter. And surprise to me when spring came, I started pulling out all my garden stuff into the back yard. Went back a week later & what I thought was a weed growing, was a new dragon cayenne pepper. I'm in zone 8. In the winter, I turn my raise bed into a compost holder & dump veggie/fruit scrapes. Spring sprung & I found stray vines that turned out to be a roma tomato, canalope, & korean melon plants.
Not in Alaska. Lol it will die and freeze.
@@MatanuskaHIGH A few people I know for sure in the MatSu pot up peppers in the fall and put them in cool storage. They come back fast in the spring.

2019 was an amazing grow season for Alaska. We had the hottest summer on record. It seemed to be 80+ for weeks in end and even felt warm at night which is unheard of in Alaska.

Just got a chance to see this video. This is a better garden than I have in central KY. Edit: If you are looking to can green beans, look into Slinderette. They are a hybrid and will make lots of beans. This year (19), I picked a handful and counted 17 beans (Pods). This is the only bean we will grow for canning.

Thanks for your gardening vids!! It is amazing to me to see how much can be done with a short growing season. A lot of people think such a garden is next to impossible in so far up north. There is a family farm in Minnesota that uses geothermal in their greenhouses and it is super cheap with their solar setup. Even with harsh winters their greenhouses stay just right and they actually grow orange trees in them all year round. Their power bill is so small most people wouldn't even believe it possible. Solar with geothermal is really a tremendous combination.

There is a corn with a short growth season that was developed in Alaska. It matures in 60 days.

Noah Hastings Very true, Yukon Chief 55-65 days and no not all corn is gmo. If it was purchased from a competent seed saver there wont be any worry about crossing with GMO corn. There are many people that grow and save seed in remote areas away from commercial GMO operations

Going back to that video knowing what I do now, aphids + low number of fruits is definitely an excess in nitrogen. I'm pretty sure it's from all the spent barley you've put in. Since the beginning of the year I've been using it, and it's definitely extremely rich. A 20 kg bag will do nicely for 10 m² or so, and the whole season. No need to put additional nitrogen or phosphorus, as it's rich in both. But you've put manure, and spent barley, and compost, and fertilizers. The plants just used all this nitrogen for gigantic leaves and few fruits. Some plants can do well in pure manure, like squashes and some peppers, but definitely not eggplants, melons, or tomatoes. I think that's why you have so few tomatoes. Coz with several weeks of 30°C weather you should have a good harvest, with fruits ripening in July. What's happening with excess nitrogen is that the plants will grow leaves until the nitrogen excess is over, and it can takes months if you put too much. This also stresses them out, and they produce a substance that attracts insects, glutathione. Insects love it as it is an anti-oxidant.

Just a suggestion... you can trim most of the leaves off of the tomato plants to shock them into ripening. I've been doing it for years and it really speeds things along. I've lived in growing zones 4 and 5. Also, I also have a "mystery" squash growing in my garden that looks quite similar to yours. Mine is a volunteer from the compost pile, so it'll be interesting to see what it turns out to be. Great video. Keep up the good work!
congrats on a wonderful harvest that reflects your planning and love of great tasting FOOD :) Just a thought , on the root cellar shelves. You might consider some wall to wall , simple bracing . As those shelves get become LOADED with hundreds of jars of goodness. They will get very top heavy. Or one mild earthquake and years of eats will be gone? Maybe there are some free sources of used plant trays , with high sides that might keep the jars upright if Murphy visits your homestead? thanks for the great garden update. Now on to splitting firewood before winter :)
