Great info on fishing MDR! I used to kayak fish there in the early 2000s before there were too many kayaks specifically made for fishing. The bait receiver was across the boat channel from where it is now and I caught just legal white seabass off it, until I realized the bait dock guys were feeding them live squid, so I left them alone. Also hooked my biggest halibut in the main channel and during the long fight a 3-story cruise ship actually snagged my floating bait bucket and pulled me until I cut the line to the bucket free! 10lb plus halibut was landed but in hindsight I should have put the reel in freespool and paddled safely away from the ship!
I can’t tell you how much this helped me. I have been fishing the east coast fresh and salt for 10 years. This is invaluable information for the inexperienced west coast fisherman.
Awesome video, just moved here from New York and cant tell you how insightful this was for me. Switching coasts is like having to completely relearn how to fish again.
I am a beginning kayak fisherman and i have been repeatedly watching this video. Its SO informative! Thank you very much for all the insights and safety tips.
Another note is when its windy, the wind will usually blow from the ocean to the beach so if you hug the inside of the wall, it keeps you out of the wind. I have found days when the inside of the wall is more productive then the outside.
Liked and subscribed ! 🔥, got my kayak late this summer already got the capsizing and climbing out the way with my 14yr old in freshwater and had some fun 🎣 but I grew up fishing piers and exited to go back to the ocean on a kayak this has been extremely helpful can’t wait to get out there ! Thanks again.
New subscriber.. I hit that spot at playa del Rey all the time & the parking lot across from the construction is closed now.. and parking in that neighbor can be quite hectic! that launch spot is still open tho!
And lastly, id like to thank badger for the informational video, this place is special to me as it is the first place that i have kayaked fish when i started and would like to go fishing here sometime with you man
Aright guys heres the scoop, the second launch is ok but be aware of the tide. I launched once in high tide but on the way back was low tide and that ramp was completely out of water and was forced to beach land. The 3rd (public launch ramp) launch is the best. The paddle is a bit long but i usually pitch the docks for bay bass.
Great timing on this video, I've been researching MDR kayak fishing this week, I'm hoping to get my first kayak early/mid june and was going to start out in MDR.
Wow. This is super encouraging. Have been want to try out kayak fishing. You know of any good place to rent a pedal fishing kayak out of Marina Del Rey?
As always, great video and great practical info and advice. As you alluded to, the second launch point is closed and the parking lot has been closed for some time due to construction.
There’s another parking lot for Mother’s beach across from the one you pointed out that’s way cheaper. The one you pointed out is more expensive bc it’s shared with the hotel
Yup - I called them inquiring about the general public launching off their ramp. They answered "No.". They did have some interesting courses though - for a reasonable fee, they'll teach you how to kayak, sail, etc. Their number is: (310) 823-0048
What battery do you recommend for your garmin unit and how long does it last? I just purchased the same unit for my hobie and looking for the best recommendation on installation. Great video! 👌
Hey, awesome video! I have had a fishing kayak for the last couple years that I take out in MDR, but never had any info to learn how to get into fishing. Is there a good rod you would recommend for a beginner in the MDR area? Really appreciate the info!
thanks, I was wondering about parking there for launching. I wasn't sure because they said the parking fee in the boat launch lot covered the launch fee so I wasn't sure if they only allowed you to launch if you parked there.
Honeybadger, love this video bro. On point and exactly what I was looking for to launch a kayak in MDR. Was wondering if this break wall is good for lobster hooping? Have you tried it before?
@@playdirty714 I haven't done enough to really speak as an expert. I've hooped off the Redondo King Harbor wall and done ok. The Long Beach wall seems to produce pretty well according to the UA-cam vids. I should tell you that it's a pretty labor-intensive and highly competitive activity, and and you should not be going out alone.
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 I agree it's labor intensive. I've done hooping at the Wedge Newport Balboa Peninsula, San Pedro, Cabrillo, Long Beach islands. I wanted to try Marina Del Rey for once. Thanks very much for your replies.
Holy crap this was helpful. Subscribed! I think I’m finally ready to take the yak down there. I’m in Burbank. You think it is too busy on a Sunday to be enjoyable?
Thanks. It would depend, but in *general*, MDR has more sailboat traffic than Redondo. There is a part 2 of this video: ua-cam.com/video/7_VX0nX-AxE/v-deo.html.
Dang, another super helpful video! Thanks again for doing those. That was really helpful. So you can still have a decent day fishing the harbor if you didn’t want to go out to those offshore areas?
@@DudefishhTV I'd say it can be hit and miss inside the harbor. You'd probably want all the factors with you like: moon phase, water movement, etc. Even then, it can be hit or miss: 9:26 of this video might help: ua-cam.com/video/aoX5NRvmD3c/v-deo.html
But in general, fishing is like anything else - if you want an extraordinary result, you gotta be willing to do things that most other people don't want to do, and I'd say that begins past the...1 mile mark.
Hi, I would consider Redondo Beach instead. I've not launched out of LB, but I've launched out of Cabrillo, and it's a *2 MILE* paddle from the launch to the outside of the breakwall. And the fishing off that wall isn't all that great. 2 miles one-way is a long ways to paddle for just so-so fishing. And if the wind is blowing out of the West, it's an uphill paddle on the way back to the launch. And there isn't a lot of interesting elevation change in that area either. And that area can be kinda rough. I never felt completely safe about parking my car in that lot.
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 I currently don't have a hobie nor a pedal kayak so I try to stay in close. The first but if structure in Redondo seems to be the breakwall/jetty but it is reachable on foot which means it's pressured. The next structure nearest structure, based on your videos would be the Palawan wreck or the beginning if the underwater canyon, but that seems a bit far for a paddle-only kayak
@@djemdubb I would probably still choose Redondo Beach. There is plenty of good stuff within 1/2 mile of the Harbor. Within 1/2 mile, you can reach water that is 200'++
Hi, I probably would not recommend that for a beginner. First off, dragging a heavy kayak through maybe 100 yds of sand is hard work, and more importantly, beach launches (and landings, especially) are much more difficult and dangerous than harbor launches.
Sorry - I'm an idiot. I keep saying "Star of David", but in fact, it's the "Star of Scotland".
I should also mention that the *sailboats* are possibly the biggest hassle out of MDR. Lot's of sailboat traffic there.
