Y’all are really speaking my language here!!! I was also discouraged from studying Science because of my blindness, but I also don’t stand down, so after a couple of years of being discouraged, I said whatever and did it anyways. I took many many visual courses including 3 math classes, 4 chem courses, and 2 bio courses, all with labs. Fortunately, the last university that I attended was very accommodating and made sure that I got everything I needed to succeed. I can definitely understand the struggles and challenges that come with being a blind college student. I really love that you touched on every topic, such as resources, advocating, and what to do to have a better experience! Job well done!
Thanks for watching Nicole! And it is just so nice to feel understood. It's been really encouraging. I had a few hands on classes, but you know me. I have more vision and can make modifications fairly easily. I'm thankful for that, but I was definitely afraid of taking chemistry labs and anything else... They're so precise...
I would be starting university this September but I’m not going due to my visual impairment . 1.5 years of online school due to the pandemic have wrecked havoc on my eyes. It made my vision overall worse and they strain so easily now. I’ve also faced so much discrimination and even bullying my entire life at school, so that scares me too. I also feel like it would be a waste of time and money because i would struggle to get a job in whatever field I studied due to not having a drivers license and the lack of public transit in my area
I understand so many of the struggles you've mentioned. I'm so sorry the online schooling has really strained your eyes. I really struggle when I have to do a ton of computer work as well. Do you use screen readers or TTS at all? That saved me during my time in school for sure. I also live in an area without transit. I have my degree and I am still looking for education in another field that will help me get a work from home job. It really is a struggle. I just hope you know you're not alone.
