He was told that this is the single most important moment of his youth and the education and social systems have made it such that his mind is almost completely preoccupied with studying for THIS exam, not for subjects that interest him and that eventually play a role in the career he chooses. He says he'll decide what to do with his life AFTER he gets approved for a number of universities. Instead of guidance early on about the employment possibilities he has in alignment with what he likes, he's made to decide everything in a short span of time without a clear idea of what he can choose from and what each career is like in practice. A comfortable life? Maybe he will have material solace, but can that truly fill a shell that has been devoid of friendship and happiness and has instead been wrapped up in stress, 12+ hours of work and a work environment that isn't remotely close to some of the things he enjoys? I'm not saying that work should be all fun and games, but it should be something that is at least partly pleasant and/or sound with your heart.
Chilling Chill you mean stressful life in one of big corporations working there 8h + extra to show that you are “worth working there” + travel time. If this is comfortable life I want eat instant ramen all my life being free, not a slave
Its sad because we are told to live your youth. It's already shown in S. Korea and many other countries of how they consider many of you "old" once you become 30. That's a really short span of time to how much you study, get a good degree and job too.

Depends, If you want to have your own company or want to be a freelancer, I highly encourage others to stop after high school or college and pursue your dream. It's very hard to start a company in Korea from scratch, since at a young age you won't get any if not, no investors. In this day and age there are so many online courses where you can learn specific skills that you're interested in to help you get on your way to financial freedom, unfortunately it isn't that easy in Korea because of the set system.
I think we all have the right to complain about our problems. Everything is relative, anyway. We just have to be aware of the people around us and how other people feel.
If I caricature, the education presented here is more like mechanical training than a pedagogical practice. I find it very difficult to imagine this context of competition. I am a teacher, a mother, and I am surprised by this constant pressure. And the ravages it seems to cause.

As a high school student in Korea, I can definitely say that Korean CSAT(수능 Suneung) and school education system are not for teaching students new things, but for classifying students with grades so that students can enter the college which fits in their grade. In Korea, you get grade by system below: Grade 1: ~4% of students from above Grade 2: ~11% Grade 3: ~23% Grade 4: ~40% Grade 5: ~60% Grade 6: ~77% Grade 7: ~89% Grade 8: ~96% Grade 9: ~100% Only students who got Grade 1 or 2 in every subject can enter good colleges in Seoul. And if you get wrong just one question, you can get lower grade, as competition is fierce. In March, June, September, and November of every year, before Suneung, you have chance to have 'simulation exam', which can allow you to predict your real score in Suneung. I'm going to participate in Korean CSAT(Suneung) in 2021, and hopefully I want to go to college in 2022. Please cheer up for all Korean high school students!😀 (Edited in August 29th, 2020) Firstly, I want to thank you for your supports! I saw a lot of people not from Korea who are participating in other exams. I'd like to tell all of you to cheer up!😀 I edited this to clear up misunderstanding. The Grade 1~2 which I mentioned above is average grade. There are 6~7 subjects which you have to study for the exam. They are Korean, math, English, Korean history, two subjects from science/social studies(physics, chemistry, biology, earth science/ethics and ideas, politics and law, economy, world history, geography), and 2nd foreign language(except Korean and English, unnecessary). The standards vary from university to university. But, I will tell you easy example. I saw a college that selects students who got total grade 3 on Korean and Math, and got total 3 on science subjects. This means you have to get Grade 1/Grade 1, Grade 1/Grade 2, or Grade 2/Grade 1 on your Korean and Math test as well as science subjects. But this is very loose standard, which is mostly used in rolling admission. When it comes to regular decision, you have to consider not only your grades but also your scores... because if you want to go to medical school of Seoul National Uni, you can only get one of the whole questions(45+30+45+20+20+20 questions) wrong. Thanks again for reading & supporting students!
This is torture, when i was in high school every day after i get back from school i be completely exhausted and go straight to bed. I can't fathom the idea of studying for 8 hours after school that is insane and is no different than torture tbh.
Im not from korea but my country (im asian) has a similar exam to this, and the pressure to score this exam is so much that if you dont get straight A's on the exam your future is pretty well jeopardised , so i had a similar routine to these students as in studying and going to academy after school. it was really tiring. Plus not having enough sleep as i attended boarding school, meaning waking up at 4:30 in the morning and sleeping at 1:00 A.M
I don't think its that tough cause I study for 5 hours a day (I am in 9th grade preparing for an exam in 4 years), I used to get exhausted as well but if you take it slowly, like 30 min in day 1, next 1 HR, next 2 hrs etc etc, I think mostly everyone will be able to make it and some people might even fall in love with studying (I do)

Homework in high competitive colleges/universities are very tough, In any field the homework difficulty is high in highly competitive colleges. After watching this video I am so happy to live in Germany. Here we don‘t have a college entrance exam in general. When you want to attend college you just need good grades. Our highschool is from year 5 to year 10 which is obligatory. If you want to go to university you have to attend another 3 years of highschool from year 11-13. In this 3 years you get your Abitur which you can compare to the IB in England. E.g.: when you want to become a doctor, you must have the best grades in your Abitur and not even one average grade. If not, you are not able to attend medschool at all. But even when you have bad grades, you can major in something else and not every university has the same collegeacceptance rules. Example: When one university only accepts the best one another university accepts everyone (changes from major to major). Also our universities here are not competitive at all and nobody really cares which university you attended. After university the only thing that matters is which grades you got in unviersity if you want to find a job. Also we don‘t have collegetuition. Basically when you don‘t attend a privateuniversity u almost pay nothing (in germany about 99% of the students attend public universities)

I feel sorry for middle schoolers who come to class exhausted. They couldn't focus on the lesson anymore. These kids need a break!
all of the negative aspects aside, I want to mention how incredibly cool it is that those other students bring snacks and cheer for the ones taking the exam. Probably even for those they dont know. Really nice of them
When a teenager experiences spending time with their friends as a distraction, something's certainly going wrong. A basic education's important but your life should not entirely revolve around school.
@suhas dey See and that's what I think the issue is. Spending time with friends shouldn't be seen that way. Socializing is just as important as studying and life doesn't just revolve around grades. You don't live to work, you work to live.
Elena surely there are people all over the world who think like this. You see one student and you think it apply to everyone? Jihuns friends wouldn’t be available if they did the same, jeez think logically.
@suhas dey Oh wow someone's salty haha. I don't even drink alcohol or like partying. But you seem to lead a terribly sad life if you think spending time with people outside is a waste of time. That's all I have to say.
This is true that most of us who do not stay in SK want to live there because of the influence made by K-POP and K-DRAMAS but we never knew properly what it is like to stay in SK with a normal life :(
Yes exactly even I wanted to live there not only because of kpop influence but also that it's a developed country and much more But I recently saw the situation like people are facing financial problems etc and many things This may have changed my opinion

yep. i’m korean american and one of the reasons why my korean parents immigrated from korea to american is because the korean education system is terrible
nice interview! this showed how hard the high schoolers and their parents go through for more than 10 years to enter the top university. it's crazy but we still can't find the alternative assessment to value their abilities fairly and equally. and i was very impressed about jihun's parents who studied together and supported him to the fullest. i think jihun is a lucky guy to have that kind of parents. the last answer jihun said means a lot to me. "now i finished the suneung and i will look for my future,,," it's sad... what if our children try to find their own dreams from the young ages, not spending all their time and energy focusing on this exam.... wish all teenagers find their futures depending on their interests and talents....please remember suneung is not the absolute test to assess your values and potential talents .
It seems like every country has this undefeatable test system which determines how well a student fits in their definition of education. This is torturous and doesn't benefit the child's creativity. It breeds anxiety and stress.
Not really,in countries like in Scandinavia you are never judged based on some numbers, from age 1 to 15 or 17(i forgot) you only have to give one competitive number based exam, and even that is not for deciding your future or judge you or anything, all of the colleges provide a very high-level of education so there is no prestigious or college hierarchy stuff, eduacation they provide would right away be considered prestigious in any other country, and did i mention it's free yeah college ed is free or in some cases it costs nothing,,,there a bunch of papers or which college you go to doesn't decide your future,,,what is the result of all this you ask? the highest social mobility, most prosperous nations, best social welfare, best educations system,a factory of successful ideas and entrepreneurs and most importantly the happiest nations on earth,,, Rest of the world: *surprised pikachu face*,"I'll pretend i didn't see that"😮😮😮
Japanese high school students also go through college entrance exam like Korean students but I've heard Korea is way more intense than Japan. I respect those students who sacrifice their time for pit. Hopefully things are going to pan out
Japan is much easier, students also have more personal freedom, and also, students can find decent to good jobs outside a uni degree. The opposite is the situation in Korea, unfortunately.

It’s heartbreaking how much stress and studying high schoolers do in Korea. With the name of the college they get into determining what kind of jobs you can get it’s one domino effect of stress. Makes me sad how students compete against on another from the time they are little. Hoping he received good scores on his test! Fighting! P.S. Asian Boss could you post a follow up comment on how he did! 🙏🏻🤞🏻👍🏻
I agree with you but it's a double edged sword. Look at how quickly Korea advanced because they educated all their citizens like this. The futuristic tech and infrastructure over there is awesome.. and impossible to establish without a highly educated nation backing your plans up.
I feel bad for the kid that Had to go to academies after school. Imagine knowing that you disapponted your parents and you are the reason of their depression :(
That is sad but personally, I think parents should not put all that pressure on their children. Parents should love their children regardless of test scores. If you love your child no matter what you won't get depressed.
totorominion yea i agree, those parents must be insane... its their child’s life not them... and they should let their children live a full filed life not a stressful and sad life! thats a bad parenting!
杯子在边太笨 well you can start by hugging your children and said you wanted them to be happy and support them with whatever their life choices are, they might make a lot of mistakes and i think they will, they might be sad and devastated, but in the end, they get to lived their life, they will grow up and out of your reach eventually so you have to use the time you have at the fullest, seeing your own children shines in their own light maybe it sounds too cringey but its what my granma told my mom so it has a special place in my heart wait... maybe you’re not a parent and im making a fool of my self lol

It's very hard to start a company in Korea from scratch, since at a young age you won't get any if not, no investors. In this day and age there are so many online courses where you can learn specific skills that you're interested in to help you get on your way to financial freedom, unfortunately it isn't that easy in Korea because of the set system.

As a high school student in Korea, I can definitely say that Korean CSAT(수능 Suneung) and school education system are not for teaching students new things, but for classifying students with grades so that students can enter the college which fits in their grade.
In Korea, you get grade by system below:
Grade 1: ~4% of students from above
Grade 2: ~11%
Grade 3: ~23%
Grade 4: ~40%
Grade 5: ~60%
Grade 6: ~77%
Grade 7: ~89%
Grade 8: ~96%
Grade 9: ~100%
Only students who got Grade 1 or 2 in every subject can enter good colleges in Seoul.
Please cheer up for all Korean high school students!😀
(Edited in August 29th, 2020) Firstly, I want to thank you for your supports! I saw a lot of people not from Korea who are participating in other exams. I'd like to tell all of you to cheer up!😀
I edited this to clear up misunderstanding.
Good luck
i hope you do well good luck man wish you all the best

I promised myself that even though my son is studying in Korea right now, I will not allow myself to be one of those Korean parents who put too much pressure on the kids to do well so they can go to prestigious universities. not really... in our case the university runs their own entrance exams & determines admission from there
Not really,in countries like in Scandinavia you are never judged based on some numbers, from age 1 to 15 or 17(i forgot) you only have to give one competitive number based exam, and even that is not for deciding your future or judge you or anything, all of the colleges provide a very high-level of education so there is no prestigious or college hierarchy stuff, eduacation they provide would right away be considered prestigious in any other country, and did i mention it's free yeah college ed is free or in some cases it costs nothing,,,there a bunch of papers or which college you go to doesn't decide your future,,,what is the result of all this you ask? the highest social mobility, most prosperous nations, best social welfare, best educations system,a factory of successful ideas and entrepreneurs and most importantly the happiest nations on earth,,,
Rest of the world: *surprised pikachu face*,"I'll pretend i didn't see that"😮😮😮
Finland doesn't afaik!
It works thoe
Japanese high school students also go through college entrance exam like Korean students but I've heard Korea is way more intense than Japan. I respect those students who sacrifice their time for pit. Hopefully things are going to pan out
일본제품 불매는 이득없는 싸움 good luck dude you got this
김ᄏᄏ good luck mate
Japan is much easier, students also have more personal freedom, and also, students can find decent to good jobs outside a uni degree. The opposite is the situation in Korea, unfortunately.
@@JoeyLevenson tests r much harder though

"I don't expect anything from him , I just want him to work hard and give his best at every opportunity he's given and he lives happily"
Someone tell this to my parents please 😭😭😭
i remember when that korean vlogger said “kpop fans and people who watches kdramas, school in kdrama isn’t the same in real life”
Crim Sin school depression doesn’t have anything to do with them it’s the netizens
@@socks4233 Some are real
like Sky Castle
High School drama can be real life event
Jenlisa Chaesoo yes true but most of schools in kdrama doesn’t show the REAL school in sk. also sky castle is a good kdrama everyone who hasn’t watch it yet you guys must watch it.
杯子在边太笨 you won’t be a good parent
杯子在边太笨 well you can start by hugging your children and said you wanted them to be happy and support them with whatever their life choices are, they might make a lot of mistakes and i think they will, they might be sad and devastated, but in the end, they get to lived their life, they will grow up and out of your reach eventually so you have to use the time you have at the fullest, seeing your own children shines in their own light
maybe it sounds too cringey but its what my granma told my mom so it has a special place in my heart
wait... maybe you’re not a parent and im making a fool of my self lol
BestName Ever I am not a parent but making your child study isn’t always right decision to see them “shine”
