  • “Even in underdevelopment, we maintain our moral compass and dignity, knowing that true strength lies in our faith and values." - Nurul Izzah Anwar
We are honored to present the second keynote speech of the 2024 Ummatics Conference by Sister Nurul Izzah, titled "Malaysia's Role in the Global Ummatic Discourse." In her address, she draws on Malaysia's heritage of activism to beckon towards the Palestinian cause, calling on each of us to ensure our struggle is not just vocal but translated into concrete, actionable outcomes, highlighting the vital role that every individual plays in advancing the ummatic cause.
Nurul Izzah Anwar is a prominent Malaysian activist, legislator, and public servant with a 25-year career dedicated to justice, economic equality, and societal innovation. She played a crucial role in founding the multiracial political party Parti Keadilan Rakyat (KEADILAN) at 18 and won her first parliamentary election in 2008. Known for her effective policymaking, she introduced significant initiatives, including Malaysia's first cashless food stamp system and the inaugural Multidimensional Poverty Index. Although she lost her parliamentary seat in 2022, she served as a Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister in 2023 and remains an influential leader in KEADILAN. Nurul Izzah holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and International Relations.
This talk is part of Ummatics Institute’s 2nd annual conference - titled "Towards an Ummatic Future" - which took place at ISTAC (International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This conference seeks to explore the “what”, “why”, and “how” of the Ummatics Institute in the context of imagining an ummatic future, understanding the importance of working for it, and thinking about how such work might proceed. The conference covered reflections by prominent thinkers on Islam as an ummatic deen, comparative unification models, mid-level discursive change, ummatic political analysis and more. “Ummatics” is an emerging concept in Muslim sociopolitical discourse that seeks to strengthen age-old Islamic ideas and practices.
