- Happy book birthday to SILVERWORLD, written by Diana Abu Jaber and published by Penguin Random House. I thought this would be a good time to dive deep into the world of book covers, and what my process was like when working on this fantasy middle-grade cover! I go step-by-step in my process, from sketches to finals and also show some time-lapses of the piece. This piece, like most of my work these days, is also entirely illustrated on Procreate on the iPad.

Its amazing how your eyes match a cartoon character's big eyes too. Just gorgeous
Thank you!!! :))
5:15 Is such a good tip. That actually makes so much sense. 😮
Thank you!!

WOW. I loved this video so much! Great breakdown of the steps in creating a book cover. Would love to see more videos like this that go into the behind the scenes of being an illustrator + tips/ advice on how to create our own shorthand for drawing! (The tip on using a brush that gives a brick like texture was a great reminder to not waste time on small details)
Thank you! I definitely plan on making more of these in the future!
I love watching the steps and listening your explanations, it's always very useful ! And your drawings are so gorgeous !
So happy I've bumped into your videos! I'm binge watching them :) Love that you're being so transparent and share such valuable information! Thank you 💖
Glad you like them!

Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing!!!
You are so welcome!
It is really beautiful you are really talented👏👍👍
Thank you!
Did you save it in PDF ? What about the dimensions? Did you set the frame in the book dimensions or with more space on the border ? Thank you very much 😊
This looks wonderful and magical! They’re lucky😍
What size is the canvas and also what is the DPI?😄
Thank you! I think the dimensions were 1969 × 2888 and 300dpi
I love it! I’ve been following since the tumblr days and I’m so glad you’ve come this far in the business. My questions would be: did you also do the graphic design? The lettering, the layout and the back cover? What about the final artwork? Did you have to prepare it yourself with all the printing specs like the bleeding and trim marks o they managed themselves? Keep up the excellent content 💖
Thank you so much!
I didn't do the lettering; it depends on the book. Sometimes I provide the lettering as sometimes they do it inhouse. I did provide them a hand-drawn option but they chose to do it themselves.
When illustrating, I do have to keep in mind the canvas to be sure it extends to the bleed/trim etc, but I don't do any of the actual printing management. :)
@@AnooshaSyed Thank you so much for your answer Anoosha, sending you a lot of abrazos!
This is amazing, lovely cover! I do have a question though. how do you manage to work with limited layers? (I know procreate has limited layers specially when working on big files) whenever I work on something big this tend to be an issue on procreate. For example how many layers do you have on the girl? is there one for colour. other for face etc?
So thankfully this wasn't a huge canvas size so I was allowed 90 on this one so by the end of it I used 46 layers, and the Girl had four layers (color, line art, hair, details). But for a picturebook I worked on recently, it had a HUGE canvas size and I was only able to have 26 layers. I had to be really selective on the layers in keeping only the essentials (like keeping only one layer for each object) and I constantly merged as I moved forward. It's really not ideal and I had to be smart about it, but it is possible. I think of it as having to paint in real life where you don't have the possibility of layers lol
@@AnooshaSyed oh I see, but wouldn't be better to work on photoshop stuff like the picture book? I mean I would love if I could just work procreate forever (its what I can assume working on a cintiq feels like) but it gives me a bit of anxiety to have like 1 layer per object, I've worked in advertising before and had a couple of freelance jobs where having stuff in 1 layer would have been a nightmare, so this is why your work aside of being awesome, impresses me even more after this video *o*
Amazing!! Thanks so much for breaking down this process, its so cool to get an inside look. I'd be interested in seeing the process of illustrating an entire book, or at least a breakdown of how you go about it. That would be super helpful for aspiring children's book illustrators (like myself), the task can seem so daunting sometimes 😅!
Thank you! I definitely plan on doing these in-depth looks into my other books as well :)
could you explain how you do dimensions on procreate and how you keep the quality
How do you deal with the faulty cmyk color profile of procreate?
This was really helpful. But what size do you use as canvas?
one of your book covers is on sora.😊😁 you are amazing
Ahh cool!
Hi Anoosha. Thank you for your videos. You are very open, authentic and informative. Is your background in graphic design? Concept art? If you could advise on what educational instruction you pursued...your early beginnings in art? What would you reccomend for someone wanting to pursue the path of illustrating children's books (both digital and freehand)
I studied illustration!
Hello,
I’m writing a book, but I don’t how to draw. Is it possible to have characters without doing any drawing?
so cool to see your process! I do have a question, do book cover illustrators receive royalties? If yes, how much would the % be? I hear that it’s very rare that they do and they only receive a flat fee. I’m currently taking up my first book cover project and would love to hear your thoughts on this 💗
Hi Seline! Generally I don't think that book covers have royalties (at least none of the ones I've worked on so far!).
Thanks for this amazing video, you are fantastic person, how do you determine the size of the book cover?
Thank you! The dimensions depend on each book and the publisher let's me know what size to work in.
This is incredibly helpful! Do you add the text for the title on procreate too? If so how do you do that?
Most of the titles I’ve worked on were added in house by the publisher!
I follow you now for a will. I learn a lot about book publiSH. thanks to your wonderfull videos and tips.
Maybe i can start my own bussines .
Best of luck!
could you please help? ❤️
I’ve been ask to illustrate two ballerinas for a children’s book. I know I’m supposed to use CMYK to color with. (Yours looks brighter than on my iPad) Tho I don’t know if I’m missing anything else big that goes with illustration format? Like which to save/ send it as?
It’s for someone I went to school with. Their mothers book. They only gave me picture idea details. No other details like you were given.
Aslo, I just wanted to say this was a beautiful & easy tutorial to understand. I tried following after seeing this video but my page keeps glitching. So I liked & added it to watch later so I can find you again!
Thank you! Is this book going to be self published? Do you know who is doing the printing? It is best to ask them what requirements they need for best quality of printing.
Your art is gorgeous!!! I am in the process of creating my own cover! Once you have your cover size do you illustrate only in that size or do you shrink or stretch your art to fit?
Thank you! You shouldn't ever resize your artwork up since you can lose image quality that way. I work within the dimensions they give (slightly more to accommodate the bleed). But if it is a detailed piece of work and a small dimension, I might sometimes as the art director if I can work at a larger size, just so I can fit the details in
@@AnooshaSyed You are amazing!! This is going to help me so much, thank YOU 😊😊 I wish you continued success with your inspiring art!
Awesome thanks! Do you do the type at the end as well ?
Do you mean the lettering on the cover? No that was the in-house designer at the publishing house.
Anoosha Syed Ah right. Yea just wondering. Wasn’t sure if that was the responsibility of the illustrator. That answers it thanks 😅
Love how the cover came out btw!
very nice dear new friend here stay connected .
Hi Anoosha, do Procreate or Adobe CC come with a template to make a book jacket, with specific places for the inside flaps and the spine?. Thanks
Hi Maria! I'm actually not sure if they do! Since books come in so many shapes and sizes I also think it would be difficult to create a standard template for one!
@@AnooshaSyed oh ok, but I should be able to design the whole book from the inside pages to the jacket with any of the two softwares right?
Wow this is fantastic artwork. I'm scared to be a digital illustrator knowing you're out there. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub!
So cool!! How do you save as a psd file?
It's one of the options on procreate!
How do you choose what kind of font to use? Do you make it yourself?
Usually the publisher will decide, but if I have the freedom, I'll just experiment around to find whatever suits the work best.
Wow, i really like your video Anoosha. Could you reccomend me about the device to drawing children book illustration and layout them anyway. My budget did'nt enough to buy ipad pro or macbook. But i think enough for buy the oldest ipad like ipad air or 8 gen and also for windows laptop with stylus supported. Which one better for me, should an ipad air/8 gen enough for my work or buy laptop? I am frustated about it. Perhaps your answer can help me. Thank you
Hi! I don't know much about the other kinds of ipads, but as long as they support the apple pencil and the app Procreate whatever model should be fine :)
@@AnooshaSyed thank you
Hi! Sorry if my question’s a bit intrusive but how do you calculate how much you should charge for a book cover design?
This is a really helpful guide that might be of assistance! businessofillustration.com/pricing-your-illustration-work/
Anoosha Syed Thank you ☺️
How do you export as psd file from Procreate? Maybe this is a dumb question but help me out😅
Go into the setting icon on your canvas, then Share, then you’ll the option PSD under your sharing options! From there, because I have iCloud set up on between my iPad and computer, I’ll save it to my files, but you could save it to Dropbox, google drive, airdrop etc
Hey!
Don't you need to make vector based art for book covers? How are you making it on procreate?
Not necessarily! I also work on photoshop/procreate for my work and so do a lot of other cover artists. It depends on the work you create.
@@AnooshaSyed omg that's great!
You made the cover for ‘Other Words For Home’? Woooooah :0
Yup!
@@AnooshaSyed That’s really cool!
Thank you! I made a video talking about that cover too!
How long is the back and forth process between you and the editors/writers? (Typically)
What part of the process do you mean? The entire time I'm working on a book or book cover there is back and forth haha. But if you mean the stages before I actually work on the final art, for a book cover I would say usually up to 2 months. But it depends on the project :)
@@AnooshaSyed gotcha I guess that’s what I was referring too lol.
Where do you do the title of the book also on the procreate?
The publisher places the title, not me!
Are you design the back cover separately?
The publisher designed the back cover!
Do you submit your artwork as PSD always or sometimes as PNG?
Asking because I know it's easier for to work in CMYK because of color range but for printing that would need to be converted to RGB
I only send over the PSD file for the final art, or if the art director requests it earlier. They can be really large files so I don't want to keep sending those over email, just JPGS are enough for earlier sketch/rough stages!
Thank You.
Just a point of clarification.
Do you always send the client artwork with layers or flat? Does it matter? Does it matter in terms of Your artist skills and protection of Your work what type of file You sent them?
Sad that they did not put Your name on the front cover. Was that agreed in Your contract?
Beautiful work beautiful soul ☆
For sketches I’ll send over jpgs, for final art I’ll send PSDs since the publisher would need them for printing and editing. I trust my clients and also make sure my work is well protected in our contracts so I feel comfortable sending full files over to them. And as for cover credit; I always have cover credit for my picture books but it’s standard for chapter book covers to have illustrator credit on the back because the author did most of the work on that book!
@@AnooshaSyed so You only designed the cover for this particular book? Thank You so much for explaining about the files.
Thank you for this informative video, I really enjoyed it. I have a question, while working on Procreate, did you started your canvas on CMYK, or did you converted that later in Photoshop? I've tried working on CMYK on Procreate and for some reason it looks even more dull and grey for me than it looks on photoshop. Maybe is my monitor settings. Thank you for reading this commment and for your time
For this one I started in RGB and later converted it to CMYK, only because Procreate didn't have the CMYK feature added yet. I now work directly in CMYK, and while there are some small color difference, unfortunatley I just have to put up with it because that's what the client needs, and I'll just try to adjust to find colors that better suit the work. I'm sure there are other people out there who have more knowledge about this subject than i do!! :')
Can we illustrate on mobile? 😊
Can you please provide the specs of your Ipad? not sure why but I see there is layer number limit on Procreate, maybe it is because the RAM? hope you can help me. Thanks for sharing your process!
I just have the 10.5 inch iPad Pro. The limited layers depends on the file size you’re working on.
Ohh thanks for your reply Anoosha, the guys at procreate says it also depends on the Ram memory so maybe 256gb is good.
@@AnooshaSyed thanks for this amazing video! Just a question: What DPI did you use for your canvas in Procreate so the printing was good quality enough, and at the same time, you had a good number of layers to work with? What would be the lowest dpi you would use for printing a book cover? Thanks a lot!
انا متحمسه لقراءه الروايات واتمنى ان تساعدني في رحله تعلم اللغه الانجليزيه .شكرا لك💕💕
Why don’t teach at Domestika? I for sure would take your class.
I wanted to create videos that were accessible for everyone :)
Do you do realism?
I can! But that’s not my preferred style.
@@AnooshaSyed Thank you
what size do you use for a book cover? and what size for the pictures inside the book?
Depends on the cover, i think this was 5.5x8.5?
Pictures also depend. If a spread lays out flat at 8.5x10, I'll usually work within that dimension, but of course much small than that.
You talk too much which is boring
