I always assumed, even that day, that Children of the Grave was chosen for Live Aid because lyrically it kinda matched the whole charity “we’ve gotta change the world” theme
Wish the soundboard recording at Summer Arena in Vienna '89 was included, best show I'ver heard from this era. And honestly, the Cross Purposes Live show is excellente, Rondinelli adding his tasteful technicality to a bunch of old classics without overplaying. He deserves more praising in the Sabbath community!
There are a lot of GREAT live recordings of the Martin era that they could have used, including yes, "Headless In Vienna", which is a nice show. Unfortunately they chose not too. My guess is because they want people to buy the forthcoming "Cross Purposes Live" reissue.
I never bought the Tony Martin releases on CD, other than the deluxe Eternal Idol, so I'm looking forward to Anno Domini. And for me, the Sabbath studio album remasters, with the exception of Born Again (which needs a remix), sound much better than the old Warner CDs, so there's a noticeable difference.
From the comments I have read this release will bring back some (well deserved) interest for this era of Sabbath. Not thanks to the physical release, but to the digital version: availability on streaming platforms. Although nowadays everything is available at least on youtube, not being readily available on major streaming services adds enough "activation energy" required, that many non hardcore fans wil not go through the hassle of obtaining those records. Especially if they are perceived as "not essential". I am positive that widespread availability will change that perception.
I for one am glad to see this set .. I don’t have any Tony era releases.. nor know much about it .. I will get the vinyl set and very much looking forward to it ..
I'm still laughing about Tony Iommi kicking out Madonna from their rehearsal space when Black Sabbath were practicing for Live Aid! And now I want a cheeseburger and chicken parmesan thanks to Chris!
The remix of Forbidden will hopefully improve on Cozy’s drum sound,in comparison to the original album. Regarding the overall lack of bonus material, l assume the legalities are the big obstacles. I have ordered the CD box set,as I don’t own the original releases. Got to track down the Ray Gillen leggy-boot you guys mentioned.
Pete, Chris - after watching you guys for a few years, I feel like like we grew up together listening to those all albums). "Headless Cross" was the first Sabbath album I was given as a little kid, without any prior knowledge of Ozzy and Dio eras. So to me it was "the Sabbath" for a couple of years. Of course I learned to appreciate all the classic Sabbath catalogue later on, but Tony's era remains the dearest to this day.
@@RobertParks-h7r I had to comment on this at around 1-2:00pm after I found out on Instagram I immediately went on YT to see if Pete had already posted something so then I came to this video and broke the news.
I have never owned these cds before. So, I'm getting it. I do own the Ozzy era box set(The Black Box) and the Dio era(The Rules Of Hell). Also, this box isn't that expensive. I think that I got The Rules Of Hell box set at Best Buy for $50 bucks. As for remasrs, I can hear the difference. I knew that this was coming for a while. Tony was dropping hints of it on UA-cam. Chris, since you're not sold on a Forbidden remix, would a re-recording be better? A few years ago, a David Bowie box set was released a few years ago which covered 1983-1987. Before he died, Bowie approved a re-recorded version of his Never Let Me Down album, but keeping the original bonus tracks. I, too, wouldn't change history, but it is fun to imagine what would have been. For example, what if Sabbath did reunite officially after Live Aid. It's funny that people complain about Sharon, but I heard that her old man was worse. Peter Grant was way worse. It's interesting that Chris brought up the wives. People blame Sharon for Bill not being on 13, but I heard that Geezer's wife was to blame too. It's interesting that Ozzy said back then that Bill was in no shape to play then, but is now saying that Bill should have been on. He's also now saying that 13 is dog crap.
Great discussion. Ozzy's outfit at Live Aid, Christ, he looks like Bea Arthur in the final season of Maude. No, but seriously, to answer Pete's poll of older Sabbath fans: I was rabid for the original line-up, flabbergasted with the quality of the Dio years, but then, Sabbath became a band without direction, and it was all about Ozzy solo, Rhoads, Lee, Gillis, and Wylde. I saw both reunion tour shows, 1998 and The End, but didn't purchase another Sabbath album until 13. BTW, I have recently come to appreciate the Martin era.
Haha! So true. Ozzy did look like Bea Arthur at the end of the Maude series. Good one! Know why? Of course you do...the f****** mid stinking 1980s, that's why! Such a shame, the whole time those performances were going on, at 19 years of age, I was thinking of the old Cal Jams and like, "Damn, what if all these good acts were together for this, 7-10 years ago. Shit, I mean Zeppelin, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Queen, Judas Priest, etc. It all would've been so much better and cooler! F****** mid 80s, and all these great bands looking like that, some not quite as bad as Ozzy (haha!), but still nowhere near as good as they used to in the brilliant 1970s! Marc ⚡
Looking forward to the Tony Martin boxset. I will take the three bonus tracks and a remix/remaster. I had "Tyr" on tape and held out getting these albums on CD in the hope of reissues with bonus. At least I will finally have all of these on CD finally.
Howdy...Canadian Sab fan here. 68 now...discovered the band at 13. Even tough the Ozzy yeàrs will be "special" to me, I've followed the band throughout all the albums imcluding all the solo albums...ALL of them. That said, I rediscovered Sabbath starting with Tyr and then went through and bought all the albums after Mob Rules. There's sometgonh to discover on each album. 🤘
Preordered my CD copy and I’m excited for it. I can see where you’re coming from as far as a lack of bonus material, but I only found out about the Martin era a month ago and I’ll take what I can get!
Excited for the boxed set, as the only Tony Martin era Sabbath I own is the Eternal Idol deluxe CD. These will fill out all the other albums I'm missing. But if I already had the albums, I would be disappointed. I want the remixed Born Again album so bad though, hopefully it will come out soon.
At least for me, who doesn´t reside in North America or Great Britain, these Tony Martin albums are impossible to get. 10 Years ago, when I looked beyond Ozzy and Dio Era Black Sabbath a used early 00s or 90s CD of Headless Cross went for 20 bucks, and after it was sold out everything past Eternal Idol (excluding Dehumanizer, although I rarely see it, I´ve got it via the rules of Hell boxset) will finally be avaiable and maybe reaches a wider audience. I know a couple younger and older Sabbath fans who just listen to the Ozzy stuff and maybe the Dio stuff, but this would be a nice way to show them the mostly great albums that Tony Martin did with them.
The sparseness of the material on the box set is 100% due to legal issues per Tony Iommi. They were not allowed to release anything under the Black Sabbath name that had not already been previously released. People don't know that due to a lawsuit filed by Ozzy that he owes 50% of the Sabbath name as of June 2010. It sucks for the fans but that's the reason.
Very interesting! That made me rewatch the Live Aid performance again. What about an episode dedicated to all those members (singers and musicians) who were part of BS but never recorded officially with them? I am thinking of Ray Gillen, Dave Donato, Terry Chimes, etc.
Looking forward to the box-set ... but i agree .. Martin said he had tons of rehearsal stuff they could have put the box-set .. i would have loved a live cd from each album tour .. but if Cross live is coming alone i see why. But i would have love a TYR live album on this sets. I too don't understand the saying there is only real sabbath and who's better.. its depends when you got into them .. what "tastes" best for each person.. its Sabbath.. we love what we love 🤘
I was blown away when Tony Martin was the guest speaker at our Church. These are Christians songs! He got saved and did not come out till after leaving the band but it is obvious when you listen to the words these are not your average Sabbath songs.
Think Headless Cross will sound quite a bit better with a remaster, but a remix would've been a big improvement. They should have done a remaster and remix.
i pre-ordered the Anno Domini LP box set. I don't own and heard the albums so i'm fine with just these album reissues. It's a shame about Eternal Idol. I did buy a cheap cassette tape on vacation in Oman of Cross Purposes when i was in my mid-teens before i got into metal. Don't why i did that and really didn't play it that much. But Forbidden better than the mighty Never Say Die?! Can't wait. Never Say Die is awesome.
For me that never got a chance of buying these albums. That are now out of print. This is a good box set to get them. I understand about the die hard fans wishing that it was more material in the box set. But for a newbie to these albums it's a great option
I only have "The Eternal Idol" and "Headless Cross". So, I'm fine with it. I would've loved had they included "Cross Purposes Live". But for a guy who doesn't have most of this it's fine. I think there is one Set of Remasters that sounds reasonably better than other releases: The 12 Priest-Albums that were done around 2001 (the ones with the Bonus-Tracks from leftover Studio and Live Tracks). They sound a lot better than the versions in the Big Box from a 2 or 3 years ago.
Agree there should've been more included in the set.. But when don't have any of them.. And these albums on vinyl go for between $100.00 and $300.00 EACH then the vinyl set is worth it.. Which is why we are getting it.. Hope Born Again will come soon on vinyl..
Eternal Idol is a different label, and the live one has old Sabbath songs. It's really obvious why this is only those 4 albums. Headless Cross absolutely needs a remaster, and a remix would have been great too, but at least it will be different. I don't own Tyr, and with the remix of Forbidden, this is worth it for me.
I'll probably get the Martin set if the price is right. The thing modern people looking back on Live Aid tends to forget about it is with the older bands we were just happy we were going to see them live on TV. I don't remember being disappointed by any act. Led Zeppelin is the most attacked part of the show nowadays but did any of us think they were going to be great? No, we were just happy to get a chance 5 years after the end to see the three remaining members playing together.
wasn't Dehumanizer written and demoed with Tony Martin? Before Dio came back in the mix? There must be a Tony Martin version of that album in the vaults...
No, Dehumanizer was written with Dio who had a fight and stormed off. In the weeks following they re-recorded it with Martin, but then Dio came back. What a roller coaster.
I get the frustration but remember there are generations of fans that haven’t been able to buy or hear these records . They have no reason to know they exist unless they do their research . So maybe contain your frustration on this for now , Tony Martin will finally see some royalties for his work
Seems like the Tony Martin box set is aimed at solely at people that are unfamiliar with the material either because they weren't into it when it first came out or because it hasn't been readily available to buy before now; as far as Live Aid: how great would it have been to get the newly reunited Deep Purple to do a set so that all 3 of the Unholy Trinity made an appearance?
When Chris and Pete were talking about the white t-shirts and the different fans standing next to each other .........it reminded me of the movie "The Warriors ". Picture Cyrus as live aid emcee. . "..... here we have the queen fans right next to the Priest fans .....and the Madonna fans next to the Sabbath fans ....Who fans next to the Zeppelin fans...and thee Phil Collins fans next to the genesis fans. Ain't nobody wasting anyone for concert turf...CAN YOU DIG IT......CAAAN YOUUUU DIGGG IIIITTTTTTTT !!!! " I think the who played , fk it , you all get my drift , 😂😂😂😂😂....Can you dig it ?
This is going to be for someone who doesn't want to pay $50 a pop for the 4 IRS originals. Throw in the book, tour program, poster, and Forbidden remix for $80 and it's a great deal for anyone who didn't have a chance to buy them originally. Moreso for vinyl fans because those used copies are damn near $100 a piece
I can hear huge differences quite often with remasters. HUGE. Usually for the better, but sometimes (like a lot of albums remastered into sludgy messes by Andy Pearce) for the worse. Given how long ago the original CD's were mastered, I'm looking forward to the remasters here. A lot. The question is, were they done right, or are we going to get sonic mud? I've pre-ordered the set because I love Cross Purpose and Tyr, and I like Headless Cross a bit, and some of the songs on Forbidden. The original CD's have been out of print for well over a decade, so just having them reissued is a big deal, but if the remastering was done right, and when you add in the 3 bonus tracks, it could be a must have.
Good news to hear that Born Again might receive Deluxe Box treatment soon - I think it's an underrated album and I'd like to hear some alternate mixes of the tracks. However, if Black Sabbath are issuing the Deluxe boxes in chronological order, that's disappointing as I guess it means there won't be a Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Box Set. I guess they didn't have sufficient unreleased tracks and/or alternate versions from the sessions, but they could have included the band's California Jam performance for example.
Eternal Idol is awesome all the way through. I like the song Headless Cross and Devil and Daughter, and I love most of Tyr, the rest I couldn't care less about. Martin is great. I'm a Bigger fan of Ozzy, Dio, Gillan, and Hughes, but Martin may be capable of singing the entire catalog than the others.
It's worth it for the vinyl edition though. The originals are quite pricy on the 2nd hand market, if you can find them at all! Especially for Cross Purposes and Forbidden.
theose albums have been out of print for a long while, so there are people who have not yet discover and own those albums and I read somewhere last year or so that both Tony I. and Tony M. were discussion about adding bonus tracks to the albums but legal BS is causing issues, so they could only throw in the b-side they had release with the singles and also another sad note, they can't reformed under Black Sabbath anymore if they wanted to do new music or tour with Tony M. you can thank the old lady Osborne for that. so, I am not suprised that some die hard fans are not too crazy about the reissues.
This is my favorite series. One of my wishes is they remix 13 with Bill Ward's drums added on. I'm sure he can get through it over time. A new album at this time is probably unrealistic. Brad Wilk's drumming is fine but it lacks that Bill Ward looseness. I think this would be a great ending to their recorded work. Keep selling both versions, the remix could be labeled as the Bill Ward version. I wouldn't want them pulling an Ozzy when Daisley and Kerslake were just permanently deleted.
I'm sorry but none of this was about tony martin lol. I'm very excited for a remix of forbidden, as that albums production has made it one I have not really relistened to much. Some good riffs though no doubt
I think it’s really expensive for what you get.Nearly £100 for 4 albums However I’ve preordered it as it’s the only way I can get these.Could have put some live stuff in for the price
I'll probably buy it because I want Tony Martin to get his share of my money. I care about that about as much as the discs. I have Headless Cross on white vinyl from Rollin' Records because, honestly, this took a really long time. Wouldn't mind having Tyr at all. I've never listened to Forbidden because I didn't wanna get mad. Iommi said "I thought that album was crap, even down to the cartoon cover art". If that's not the anti-endorsement, I don't know what is! By the way, I wonder if Glenn Hughes had clotted blood in his throat during the New Jersey show because the dude punched him in the face and broke the bone? That supposedly happened, I just don't know when.
I only have Tyr on CD and Headless Cross on cassette so getting the box set gets me three discs I don't have, so that's nice, too bad Cross Purposes Live wasn't included though. Also I guess Vertigo Records owns the masters of Eternal Idol so legal issues kept them from including it in this box set. And am I the only one who wants to get a Seventh Star remix/remaster?
Ozzy say Geezer did reach out to him when his health got bad , Geezer said he tried a few times but for some reason Ozzy didn't receive his messages, so now they are not talking 😢
@@jimmypage2843 the King by far, when he loves something he goes all out and Sabbath is his favorite band, I heard him once talk about buying a $500 or $600 Sabbath book, I would never spend that kind of money on a book, unless Ozzy was going to read it to me 😆
The only reason I’m probably going to get this is cause I don’t have a couple albums on cd, the 60 dollar price is killing me, I wish they would release stand alone discs so I don’t have to buy the whole box set
For me, as someone who hasn’t gotten to hear these albums outside of UA-cam rips, I’m treating this box set as an introduction to this era. Yeah it absolutely sucks that more material isn’t included, but I’m just glad I can have easy access to these albums full stop

And now I want a cheeseburger and chicken parmesan thanks to Chris!
too funny Lana! :)
Can’t wait to buy the box set, we waited so long for this. Also sorry to bring sad news up but Dickie Betts has passed away. 😢
Pete did a 10 minute tribute today to Dickie

Chris. King 🤴 ALO /. Always great. Dead serious. Pete is daily tremendous. Thx guys. Fun stuff 👍💯
Love listening to you two guys 🤘🤘
Sabbath = Iommi
I'm glad I'm not the only one who says this!
Watching you in the evebing in Germany I always calm down from the daily routine! So great! Keep the spirit on!
I hope they do a super deluxe edition of never say die so I can send one to Chris
You wouldn't have to the King would buy it no matter how much he hates it. 😂
@@jimmypage2843 probably lol
As much as he hates Never Say Die he's shown all the copies of it he owns which is like 5 or 6.😅
Preordered my CD copy and I’m excited for it.
The eternal idol is my favorite Tony Martin album with Black Sabbath
ditto!
Sabbath went on 9:55 - sandwiched between Billy Ocean and Run DMC. Judas Priest went on 11:30 sandwiched between CSN and Bryan Adams.
Thanks! I guess I always mixed that up, always though Priest came on before Sabbath.
"I thought she was hot. I don't think she is hot anymore." Fucking hysterical 😂
I don't think she's even HUMAN anymore...
Remastering to the lay listener makes f**k all difference......remixes can make a HUGE difference
Exactly!
Think Headless Cross will sound quite a bit better with a remaster, but a remix would've been a big improvement. They should have done a remaster and remix.
I was waiting when SoT was going to discuss this boxset!
Get A Grip remixed sounds great and a good song from Forbiden.
I had forgotten Sabbath’s Live Aid gig was in Philly, as opposed to London. They played at 9:55AM!
I really enjoy Never say die. Give me that over all of the Tony Martin records
i pre-ordered the Anno Domini LP box set.
Great show guys as always
This box set will be mine.
Tony Iommi is Sabbath!
wasn't Dehumanizer written and demoed with Tony Martin? Before Dio came back in the mix? There must be a Tony Martin version of that album in the vaults...
No, Dehumanizer was written with Dio who had a fight and stormed off. In the weeks following they re-recorded it with Martin, but then Dio came back. What a roller coaster.
Glenn might be singing on Toni's new solo album
That would be great. Fused is a wonderful album
Toni Braxton?
*Tony
I get the frustration but remember there are generations of fans that haven’t been able to buy or hear these records . They have no reason to know they exist unless they do their research . So maybe contain your frustration on this for now , Tony Martin will finally see some royalties for his work
Im one of these old guys, 74, that like just certain line ups. Ozzy Black Sabbath, Deep Purple Mk 2 and such.
I have to get this
Preordered mine as soon as I heard it was available
I think the who played , fk it , you all get my drift , 😂😂😂😂😂....Can you dig it ?
Will you be taking a look at the Deep Purple Machine Head box set which came out recently?
Will release of this boxset get these albums on streaming services? If so then that is very useful
That next show will be interesting
Good news to hear that Born Again might receive Deluxe Box treatment soon - I think it's an underrated album and I'd like to hear some alternate mixes of the tracks. However, if Black Sabbath are issuing the Deluxe boxes in chronological order, that's disappointing as I guess it means there won't be a Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Box Set. I guess they didn't have sufficient unreleased tracks and/or alternate versions from the sessions, but they could have included the band's California Jam performance for example.
Correct. It appears as though there will NOT be Deluxe 4 disc sets of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Master of Reality, etc. Which is VERY sad.
Cool discussion!
Tony Martin rules. Greatest Sabbath singer together with Dio
How about a sabbath re ranking from both ?
What sites do you buy your bootlegs from?
Amazon and Ebay mostly
Couldn’t care less for the Box set, but it’s great that these records will now be back on the streaming services again.
why didn't they include cross purposes live in the box set
I only have Tyr on CD and Headless Cross on cassette so getting the box set gets me three discs I don't have, so that's nice, too bad Cross Purposes Live wasn't included though. Also I guess Vertigo Records owns the masters of Eternal Idol so legal issues kept them from including it in this box set. And am I the only one who wants to get a Seventh Star remix/remaster?
I do as well!
Yep, same here! I would LOVE a Deluxe 4 Disc Seventh Star!
Ozzy say Geezer did reach out to him when his health got bad , Geezer said he tried a few times but for some reason Ozzy didn't receive his messages, so now they are not talking 😢
Another great Sabbath Stones episode 🤘🤘
@@countralfus6408would love to see who has more Sabbath swag, the King or the Count? That's a whole show in itself. 😂
@@jimmypage2843 the King by far, when he loves something he goes all out and Sabbath is his favorite band, I heard him once talk about buying a $500 or $600 Sabbath book, I would never spend that kind of money on a book, unless Ozzy was going to read it to me 😆
Yeah you can get it cheap it is well worth it with the Ray Gillen album on it
I'm pretty pyched for it, I don't have any Tony martin era Sabbath
The only reason I’m probably going to get this is cause I don’t have a couple albums on cd, the 60 dollar price is killing me, I wish they would release stand alone discs so I don’t have to buy the whole box set
