      Charly III I guess it’s all subjective but a lot of the British writers that wrote for DC and Marvel back in the day either started a trend of edginess that was originally tasteful but led to edge lord nonsense (Alan Moore with Watchmen and MiracleMan) or they immediately came out the gate with just the most off the wall stuff. Garth Ennis wrote this cannibal comicbook awhile back that really makes no sense to me

    The Boys is probably the most realistic take on the idea of Super Humans existing in our world

    • @bunklypeppz
      @bunklypeppz 5 років тому +493

      I especially liked how Translucent turned into a coward and started begging for his life the instant it became clear that the boys figured out how to kill him. It actually makes a lot of sense that people who grew up with super powers and therefore never experienced true danger, even in the mundane ways that regular people experience it (like driving, walking in the woods etc.), would actually be more cowardly than regular people when they actually were in real danger, because they would just be totally unaccustomed to it; and I hope that is something that the show explores more later on.
      It's kind of silly when you think about how heroes like superman are always depicted as fearlessly confronting these villains that pose existential threats to humanity and the heroes themselves, in spite of the fact that, for example, superman grew up on Earth where he was effectively sheltered by his own invulnerability, making him as unaccustomed to danger as someone could possibly be.

      @@bunklypeppz This is an important point about privilege. When white men say that it's a "dangerous time for men" because of the #metoo movement, it's because they have never actually lived with the danger that the people who they dominate have experienced their entire lives. As Margaret Atwood has said, "Men are afraid of being rejected. Women are afraid of being killed."

    I love how this show doesn't treat this as a black and white, oppressor vs oppressed issue. Superheroes are humanized, even the ones that do the most unspeakable acts, and are shown to be slaves just as much as the rest of us. They're trapped in a game of cat and mouse with each other, fighting to maintain their power.
    Also, the show also calls into question how we should fight back against this domination. At first I feared this show would glorify killing superheroes, but it really doesn't. Hughie's supposedly empowering moment in episode 2 is deconstructed to hell and back, causing Hughie to feel crushing remorse and ultimately turn away from that life. Similarly, Billy's edgy quest for revenge is shown to be self-destructive and harmful to others. And in the end, Hughie saves the life of the person he hates the most.
    The Boys shows that when we fight back against tyranny with their own methods, we become no better than them.
    Which... I'm glad this is the message. When the first trailer dropped, I thought this would be an edgy show about terrible people screwing over other terrible people and glorifying the underdogs for brutally murdering people more powerful than them. But instead it takes a pretty level-headed approach to the theme.

      right I was thinking ah so watchmen but on amazon haha. but yeess!
      You can really see the how when A train, after his femur is broken in the store getting racially profiled, how he's gripping to maintaining his place of power that he gets from his superhero identity and the seven. He was upset that the guard saw him as just some normal black guy. I thought it was going to be a moment for him of calling out racism but he had more of an ego meltdown. I liked this because it showed his character and mindset, additionally when he later says something along the lines "you don't fuck with (my) money" showing how we'll uphold the value we've placed in money over morals, doing anything to uphold the power structure money has created. It made sense for his character as a black American man, in the sense that its a similar mindset well off black people have to survive in this system, doing what they can to be viewed as equal and successful while superior over others. Desiring the lives we've been shunned from and then reluctantly let into constantly fighting to prove our value. As a poc I noticed this nuance and I really enjoyed it.
      It really showed the systems of oppression, highlighting the tactics used to win over a population, and the contributors to the toxic system that they are either rewarded or damned by. Also, it comes for the pharmaceutical companies lowkey I'm sure something like this will come to be and this is how the prime us for it. amazons priming us hahaha.. ha h

    I think this commentary is an accurate reflection on today's society, but it's too focused to be an accurate representation of our pervasive social "dominance." I can get behind the notion that big companies are constantly manipulating us to buy products we don't need for problems they've created, but I don't think this is the only, or even the most pervasive form of,cultural dominance we have in today's society. Rather, our interpersonal social dominance is ironically the most prevalent form of dominance. Not a single day goes by where we aren't subjected to a myriad of social pressures levied against our own personal interests. Now, if that's good or bad, I don't know. What I do know is that society, everyone in society to be more specific, is the primary dominator of humanity.

It further elaborates how bad we are at directing this power for our best interest; how fucked up things can get when we refuse to participate in a larger forum, clinging to our own half-truths at the expense of another person's well-being. It is what made strongman politics so attractive at a time when people's expectations are subverted by an uncertain future. We actually have to power to trade away our democratic system.

    Also, the social hierarchy domination is one of those scenarios that allows for the greater injustices.
    Example:
    Trafficked woman kills her capture but gets sentenced for manslaughter. That’s an unfair dealing of the law in a social hierarchy of domination model.
    Was the trafficker providing a service? Was he providing worth or comfort? Was he creating capital and money out of the selling of teen’s body without consent?
    Capitalism seems to provoke and promote the most abhorrent behavior in order to make capital. Does anyone else see this like I do?

In a sense the whole problem with superheroes was created by Mallory himself, the founder of the Boys. Mallory managed to kidnap Vogelbaum and have him refine compound V and make it stable and practical for military use, but he forced him to make it crazy expensive in order to avoid mass production. Voughf on the other hand was left with a defective and unstable version of V that had unpredictable effects and mostly produced freaks, wich forced Vought to rebrand those freaks as superheroes and use them in the entertainment industry. Even Vought's best specimens, Patriot and Black Noir were failures, since they were too powerful to be reliably controlled. Physical and psychological domination through violence. At the personal level, the organizational level, or the societal level, it's violence that rules. The credible threat of violence and the willingness to back up that threat with action is what cements both legitimate and illegitimate domination. Police, military, or super heros in this case, are the key to enforsing domination. Those who are dominated need to either accept it somehow or fight it and face that violence. Most choose to accept it in order to survive. That's not the same as wanting it. And without a large number of people willing to change who dominates and who is dominated through the credible threat of violence and the willingness to back it up, it will remain in place.
    Here, the Revelation that super heros are created with a drug instead of naturally born isn't a paradigm shift. The company and society can handle that, to a large extent. But the thing they can't admit, ever, is that they are vulnerable to the very violence they use. They have to lie about the dead invisible man because the fact that a couple of regular guys could capture and kill him would completely upend the societal acceptance of their domination.

    In the source material. The Supes have comics that Vought America sells to the public that they claim "Tells the full story of the adventures of the Supes" There's even a panel where Butcher and Hughie are walking past a huge shelf of comics, Hughie picks one up and says "I know about this one, he died saving the universe." Butcher just laughs and says "Nah chocked on Cum."

    To expand up the military industrial complex idea, I think the it's worth expanding to how private entities, specifically corporations, are taking on the roles that previously preformed by the government and public institutions. This can be seen beyond the military industrial complex, with more survalience, communication, and access to information from tech companies, or the importants of the energy conpanies in deyermining public policy reponce to climate change etc. And, these private entities, with private interests, are less and less held to account of the rule of law, as well as the checks and balances and popular sovereignty that hold, democratic, governments to account. As FDR stated: "The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power."

    • @frederikspitra7832
      @frederikspitra7832 5 років тому

      I always knew fascism as waaaaay different definition. Also, an absolute king, monarch would be a fascist too in your definition. That doesn't sound right.
      I know fascism as the interweaving of totalitarism (you can't even be silent towards the party. If you are not freneticly chanting, you are a goner) and one group above/vs all others. Once the hostile groups are removed, you create new ones to fight against. For the system can not function without an enemy to hate/feel supreme over.
      And that's the thing, fascism has no endgame.
