Am I the only one on the planet who actually believes the old commercials portraying McDonald's as a magical place for a kid's reward were more honest than today's portrayal as cool, hip hang outs for an acceptable lunch? Anyway, good on you for pointing out how experimental the early days of the NES were. It was so much fun watching this medium grow.
Donald Land is pretty bizarre as far as NES platformers go, and I totally love it. It's quirky, it's funny, and it plays well, just like you'd expect from Data East.
It's really nice to see a game starring Donald McRonald. Er, Donald McDonald, or Ronald McDonald... Just when I thought the main villain was going to be Hamburglar, we get that monster. This does look like a decent game, with pleasant catchy music. Agreed on the amusing weirdness, too. Ran ran ru!
_Donald Land on Famicom_ . The Japan only McDonald's game that I honestly wish was brought over here. As a kid, I played _MC Kids_ (🇪🇺 _McDonaldland_ in PAL regions) a lot. It had good music, graphics, and solid gameplay. It wasn't an amazing game by any stretch, but I still squeezed some fun out of it. *This* game I knew about back then, as I liked to import PAL & Japanese games/consoles/handhelds/etc back then. At first, I thought nothing of it. I liked the music and graphics, but the game didn't really beat _MC Kids_ in terms of how much I enjoyed it. I didn't even play it as often as _MC Kids_ . *Nowadays* , I like it a little more. Although, I still think that _MC Kids_ is better. POSITIVES: • *Good Graphics* (It's nothing too terribly impressive, but still looks really good. I kinda wish more colors were used, though.) • *Good Music* • *Good Presentation* (I like how the game's "Shop" is the inside of a McDonalds restaurant. Neat touch, Data East!) • *Gameplay that's simple, but fun* NEGATIVES *Awkward Attacks* (I am not a fan of attacking enemies in this game at all. You can only fire your projectiles straight up or down, Not directly in front of you. Making it a bit of a "learning curve" as it's easy to miss them if you stink at aiming at enemies.) Final Rating: 6.5/10 It's not perfect, though if you are looking for a good McDonalds game, it wouldn't hurt to try this game at least once. It's also *VERY* English-Friendly, too so...
In spite of all the glitches and issues it has, it's actually a really respectable effort for the time, if a relatively simple one. Gotta love the nightmarish monsters in some of the stages. It's funny that he's called Donald McDonald in Japan though, hah.
Yeah, and it plays like it's an expose on how unhealthy fast food is; you see so much of it throughout you'd swear this was Morgan Spurlog's favorite retro game...
Once, I tried to ask this game’s composer, Shogo Sakai (now known for having done music for Smash Bros games) why this game was unreleased in the U.S. He said he wasn’t sure, but it was probably because of licensing. Still, it’s for the best that it wasn’t sold here because I likely would have had nightmares and would not have wanted to go to a McDonald’s for a long time.
"Donald" looks like Raggedy Ann crossed with the actual Ronald dolls that were sold in the '80s. The game does look cute, though. Definitely the kind of game you would rent for the weekend and at least get your money's worth from.
Donald Land on Famicom is a game that I have fond memories of. I remember playing this back on my imported Famicom, and while I didn't like it as much as say MC Kids or Treasureland Adventure. I still liked this game. Though it always confused me as to why Ronald is named "Donald McDonald", but every other character's name were unchanged. Until I found out that in Japan, Ronald McDonald is *DONALD* McDonald from going to a Japanese McDonald's for only one time of my life. POSITIVES • *Good Graphics* (Although, a little more color would have been nice. It was 1988, yes. But there's so much brown, blue, and green in the color scheme. Hell, some levels just change background color.) • *Good Music* • *Good Presentation* (Gotta love how the Shop is a McDonald's restaurant.) NEGATIVES • *Awkward Projectile Attack* (I really don't like this projectile at all. You can only fire it in 2 directions. Straight up or below you. I wish that there was a forward attack as well. It isn't too bad when you get used to it, but it can be a it of a learning curve when you first play this game.) Final Rating: 6.5/10 If you're looking for a good Famicom game to add to your collection, or a good McDonalds game, it may entertain you. It's entirely in English as well, so...
What I'd recommend doing for the ocean stage is holding Turbo A on a turbo controller. That way Ronald will be able to get out of the crevices he gets stuck in much easier
McDonaldland aka ‘Mc Kids’ is the true McDonald Game. The music and feel of McDonaldland is awesome and classic😊. Also McDonald’s Treasureland Adventure is Great.
I'm a lot less familiar with this one, so I will make it quick: This looks to be a fairly average platformer from this era. Especially as seen from the eyes of someone who was shamelessly spoiled rotten by a beautiful Sega Genesis/Mega Drive childhood. The graphics are decent if a bit ugly in some places. Plus, man, you never see these McDonaldland characters anymore! Who remembers Mayor McCheese or the Fry Guys? McDonald's seemed to get rid of most of those guys by the 90s. Ronald, Birdie, Grimace and Hamburglar are probably the most iconic at this point. But sadly, even those guys eventually became missing in action in more recent decades. That's just sad, I miss my childhood. :(
I am pretty familiar with this game, as I used to play this game a ton on my childhood Famicom (I liked to import PAL and Japanese games/consoles/etc back then). I prefer Treasureland Adventure as well as MC Kids over this one, but this game I really like. Looking at this game now, it brings back my memory of the one time I went to a Japanese McDonald's restaurant. There I found out that Ronald is called Donald McDonald, which confused me in the game as every other character's name wasn't changed but Ronald's was.
This game feels more like you being happy about the weekend to be started and don’t care about anything else, About those tunes, they can be fun as if those musicians were sooo happy composing those tunes, About those pseudo advert game along with it’s storyline,it shouldn’t be taken too serious.
Well the Apple thing makes sense as Mc.Donalds uses more apples than any other resteraunt chain on earth. As for them exploding? IDK I guess they're full of fat and calories from all of the fast food Mc.Donalds serves?
