For people using the fx3 as a primary film camera, the fact it has the power zoom slider for pz lenses is really underestimated imo. Having the ability to have real smooth cinematic zoom movements from the camera will be a major for some people. I own neither but that feature along with tally lights is majorly appealing.
I currently own the a7iv and only now getting into film making. Great camera to learn with, I may add the fx3 in the next year once I'm more to grips with filming.

I picked up the FX3 as well after the new firmware. I’m not a pro so I just use S-Cinetone and call it a day. The reason I bought it was for the built in time code support. I do a lot of ambient recording and record that externally. The only reason I chose the FX3 over the FX30 so I can use all of my FF lenses as they were intended. I pair the FX3 and with my A7iv and it’s a match made in heaven. I guess that makes be a YT d bag 😂.

HI Vu ! Thanks for your helpful and insightfull humorous reviews. As an amateur photograhper / videographer, like many, I dream of the As3 /Fx3. Your review helped me realize that I should be happy with my A7-III and that can save towards of a A7-IV instead. A PRO obviouly has more need for 10 bit color and 60/120 fps in 4k. Once mastered, the A7-iii already produces stunning video and photos that I am very happy with.

I personally love the view finder. I don’t really understand what people don’t use. It’s great for quickly checking your focus or exposure when playing back the footage.

same here, for runngun is a real life saver when direct sun hit
I use the viewfinder when in bright outdoors or to stabilize during handheld shots, but since I use glasses, it is not that great. Also, during covid times, my breathing to my mask while on the viewfinder would fog my glasses and I would lose time cleaning them.

I liked the a7S3 so much I bought two of them within 3 months of release in 2021. I got the a1 as the b-cam but got tired of doing color matching so I got a third a7S3 this year. I never considered the FX3 because I really like the view finder in the a7S3.

I confirm: the VIEWFINDER is very important in bright sunlight or in the dark: it really helps to "zoom focus" with the peak funktion and nail sharpness with manual ciné lenses or when the auto-focus is lost in low light .

very good informative video .. i hv been using the sony a7siii for 6-7 months now and absolutely love shooting with it. i was using the canon m50 before that and the upgrade really helped.

I'm switching to Sony FX30 once B&H finally ships it. I don't have to pay for a top handle I don't need and I get something better for the kind of operations I've been trying to do with a Panasonic S5 (good IBIS and image quality, but no PDAF and it has a 30-minute limit for 4K 10-bit video)
Sony is the way to go

Great informative /comparison video but what about the Atomos Ninja V. With the Atomos I'd say the A7Siii is still viable just a matter of choice. It also allows you to load LUTS and preview along with other helpful scopes and features. The A7siii has more has more focus points. They both have pros and cons. But I don't think you loose either way just different form factors and features.
Just to reiterate, I don't want to have to have a monitor.

Great video. How are you setting up your FX3 to toggle between a preview LUT and the flat Slog3 profile view? If I adjust my settings to get proper exposure with the preview LUT I will be under exposed. I usually go 1.5-2 stops over to expose slog3. What am I doing wrong? How can I preview a LUT when shooting and nail the exposure correctly? Thanks!
U adjust the lut -1.5 and save the lut. Then import the lut into your fx3. When you film and you are at 1.5+2.0 your image on your display will look proper

Cine ei is basically gamma assist just for the camera screen, when you shoot a dark scene, you will raise the ISO to capture the details in the shadows, normally without cine ei the image on camera screen is over exposed and you can’t see. Cine ei hence darkens the image so it doesn’t look over exposed. Dududududu
It's basically a way for you to judge exposure on screen whether over it under exposed without baking in footage

love the new firmware, but still dislike on how it displays the audio bars on 4CH audio (compressed into 2 columns/2 lines at the top left).
Also not crazy on the lack of slog2, not that i really use it anyway.

@@nVuFilms no. 2.0 firmware removed slog2 from the gammas selection.
The 4 Ch audio used to be displayed in 4 lines over the image on the left. Now they pushed the audio monitor bars at the top, which looks great when it's 2ch audio. But on 4ch instead of displaying 4 long lines. They put 2 very small bars on each line which is hard to monitor visually

@@nVuFilms I mean… I was about to sell my Sony a7siii for the fx3 due to those awesome tally lights, design and the new firmware..but then I realized that the a7siii besides the new features (thanks the update) can basically deliver the same image quality of the Fx3 and so after the announcement of the fx30 there was no reason for me to switch to the fx3 anymore!

8:38 i think there are different cine-ei modes. One of them doesn’t change the iso for the image, just the display. I can’t remember which one. Try it maybe

I agree with your a7s take.. seems sony is going to have the fx line and the a7 hybrids. My only concern is, sometimes when it’s bright outside it’s nice to have a viewfinder to frame a shot.

For a beginner getting into indoor basketball and concert stills and video, what would you recommend? I was looking at the a7iv, but rolling shutter has steered me away.. I’m between canon r6ii and one of the 2 Sonys in this video
Yeah i film sports and a7s iii is much better for me than my a7iv due to rolling shutter. I also prefer a7s iii over fx3 for run and gun sports especially football for the EVF. Hard to see in direct sun

With the difference in price between a7s3 and fx3 in today’s market i’d rather buy an a7s3 and invest the rest on a good lens or external monitor to get 16bit raw footage and i can import my luts as well.😂

It's exactly the same.
I started with an a7s3 and then needed a b cam. The only option available in the UK at the time for stock levels was an FX3 at about the same price as the a7s3 so that wasn’t an influencer like it might be in the US. Now I hardly use the a7s3 as the FX3 feels better in the hands and for the menus. Tilta half cage is nice on it and even with a big monitor on top of a top handle it still feels quite well balanced when you get used to it.
I think both exist purely to please different people and to try and win customers away from the competition

No EVF is a total dealbreaker! The A7sIII is superior for that reason alone! When you are shooting outside in the direct sun, you'll be glad you aren't relying on a washed out monitor.

I'm no pro but one thing I dont really understand. People rig out their FX3 to the point where its as big or bigger than an FX6 but it looks like its sellotaped together. Wouldn't is make much more sense to spend a bit more on an FX6 and not have to buy all these add-ons, cage,monitor, ND filters and whatever else it takes?

The form factor of the fx3 means you can strip it back down to a very small size, you always have that option. You don't with the fx6 and above.

Great video. When you shoot into the sun do you still over expose by 2 stops? Shooting into the sun is the only time I don’t know how to expose properly. My footage is still looking nice, but I’m just eyeing it every time.
I do. But I also keep an eye on the subject to see what they are looking like
@@nVuFilms okay so I feel like that’s how most people probably feel when they’re shooting into the sun. This is the only time I really use gamut assist and I feel like the LUT assist would be really useful in this situation.
