  • Today's video is with a Black Belt I met down in Florida Will Abreau. In the video he shows a nice ankle pick technique you can use for BJJ training or competition. Will wrestled in college and has also competed in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions a ton. In fact, if you look around at some of his tournament videos you'll see this exact move being used. It's a great technique to bring some wrestling into your BJJ.
    In the takedown tutorial he'll show some basics on how to set it up and what happens if it doesn't work.
    You can check out Will at:

    Oh and sorry for the camera noise at certain parts of the video. It's a little off. This is the learning curve of using new gadgets. Sometimes there's a few things to figure out. And the volume on the new travel camera is one of them.
    Hope you enjoyed the video and I'll see you next time!

    Some of the wrestlers in the comments section are failing to understand something about this technique. It is MODIFIED for BJJ, meaning this is how Will is using this OUTSIDE the context of a wrestling rule set, and against competitors who often have no wrestling background. I promise you that he understands that this technique would need to be finished differently under a wrestling rule set, and I promise you that he understands that former wrestlers will respond differently to this attack than pure BJJ players do...

    Whenever I try to take a wrestling stance in BJJ stand-up, invariably people start attacking my neck ... guillotines or snapdowns. I'm assuming the counter to this is maintaining that distance with the hands checking their shoulder. Any other tips? Much appreciated!

    Would recommend watching wrestling technique for this take down it’s more refined. As most takedowns from the feet will be.
    There is 3 more defenses to a low single.
    You can just step on the guys same side shoulder and step over. Will most like result in no scrabble and stay on the feet. This must be trained to a muscle memory.
    Next is were you just fall on the guy put his head inbetween your legs. From here it’s a scramble situation where you want to be attacking his legs and hands.
    Third is a “discuss throw” it’s the worst defense in my opinion but it’s better than letting him stand up. You spin on your trapped leg all the way around and go for his leg you both end up on the mat with a leg and you are in a scramble position. Issue is a good guy will just stand up as you come out of the spin. And you end up in even worse position.

    Should I take more pride in being able to tap larger opponents, or being able to tap higher belt levels? Bit of a broad question but it will help me with my mindset

    • @abreujiujitsu

    • @drossi101
      @drossi101 3 роки тому +1

      Belt. You shouldn’t have an issue tapping someone bigger if you’re better at Jiu Jitsu. But really you should just be focusing on getting better and not which is better tap. Especially if it’s rolling and not a competition. When I’m rolling with lower belts I let them work. I don’t just let them have subs but I’m not trying to smash them. If they do everything correct I will let them get the submission so they can improve their game. If they were getting prideful over me taking it easy to HELP THEM LEARN then that would be the last time I took it easy on them and I be giving them a reality check the next time we rolled.

    When I wrestled I had a single leg where I would drop down to a similar level, but instead of standing up for the ankle pick, I would drive through for the single leg. And if I needed I could trip his other leg with my other hand.
