I make fresh chop every few months that I freeze in small portions and is about 70% fresh veggies 30% grains, with a bit of fruit and seeds mixed in (ground flax seed, chia seeds, and commercial bird seed mix). Millet is used almost exclusively as a treat for my budgie and pellets are available all the time but my budgie doesn't like them as much compared to his veggie mix

I loved this video, thank you for the tips! My budgie is 10 years old, and I've fed him mixed seeds all his life. I thought I was doing it right. Even though, he was always healthy because sometimes I give him fruits and greens. More recently, he was diagnosed with fatty liver, so now I will introduce him to pellets.

MOST pellets are made from poor quality cheap ingredients that are bought cheaply by the pellets companies from factories wanting to get rid of the foods 'not fit for human consumption'. Then the foods are crushed up and baked as high temperatures which destroy the small amount of vitamins in them. Artificial chemicals are added to make to pellets pretty colours, to preserve them, and to add back the vitamins and minerals that are lacking in the pellets. They are basically food waste. Look at the ingredients on your birds pellets bag if you have them. Its CORN, SOY, and VEGETABLE OIL. Would you feed your bird dry, factory rejected corn meal, soy meal, and greasy vegetable oil? I hope not!
Feed fresh seeds, sprouted seeds, vegetables, fresh herbs and hard boiled eggs to your birds, together with mineral blocks, cuttlefish bones, and oyster shell grit. They will be very healthy. Just don't feed too much. Give the correct amount for your species of bird and not have dry seeds available 24/7, or your bird will only eat the seeds till its full and not want other foods.

Hey, so I know that this comment was made a while back but maybe I can help you out. I have had budgies since I was 17 in a pair and they would always bond with each other and see me as third wheel😂. I had lot of patience but they never actually came around. Few months back I again gave it a go and bought a single budgie this time. I kid you not within 2 months now he's fully tamed, spends 2-4 hours daily outside cage, sits on my shoulder and plays all the time. I think it sees you as his flock and he trusts you that happens when you get a single budgie first. You may add another budgie 6-8 months later when the first one I fully tamed. I don't plan to get any new one as company to him because he is extra bonded with me and I choose to keep our relationship that way.

Yeah the whole pet industry is much like human they push shit on us so we get sick. More money in sickness than in health. I often wonder how much longer our cats and dogs would live if they didn't have to be injected with va$$ines or be fed processed food kibble.. I just think how we were originally meant to eat and how an animal would eat in the wild. No animal cooks it's food. When I switched my pug to a raw diet I almost immediately saw less shedding and same with my cat less hair loss. Terrain theory is fact and germ theory is garbage.

Well if that's your concern, try TOPS pellets they are cold pressed to preserve nutrients, no sugar or artificial ingredients/sweetners and no corn. Its one of the best bird foods you can buy and seeds have tons of fats, are sometimes cheaply produced and made (why they are so much cheaper than pellets) and will cause fatty liver and shorten your birds lifespan by some years

@@poopypooppants4467 no thank you, my birds get the best seeds made, Roudybush, mixed with Higgins egg food. So seeds make up about 75-80% of their diet. Roudybush has vitamins , calcium, minerals, supplements, dried fruits and all organic products. Veggies make up the rest of their diet, carrot greens, cucumbers, broccoli and their favorite broccoli rabe. They love to hang on and play with the broccoli rabe like the balls of greens are toys so it entertains them as well. They get fruits once or twice a week, strawberries, apples, and grapes with the seeds removed. I put vitamin drops in their water every other day because too many vitamins is not good either. They’re very healthy. I hide their treats in toys a couple of times a week to keep them happy and entertained. They were all born here from a clutch of 11 eggs (believe it or not) so I kept the three I hand raised. An average clutch is 4-8 with 8 being a large one. All eggs hatched healthy. They’re parents were very healthy also. I gave them and the other 8 babies to reputable breeders and good homes. Beautiful babies, An albino, a Lutino, two Creaminos, and I actually had a purple pied too. Mom was a Pied. I kept two plain green and a Creamino. ❤️❤️

You're a bit right in terms of pellets being lunchables for kids. But not quite.
Some pellets it is like McDonald's since some pellets brand contain sugar, corn, vegetable oils, soy, lots of fruits which translates to more sugar, too much vitamins and supplements which your bird may most likely not need especially in the warmer months.
It depends on the type of pellets you get and what ingredients are in there. The more vegetables the better.
Also, birds still need seeds in the diet maybe 5-10% of seeds. Since in the wild they eat many different kinds of fruits and vegetables.
For the fruits they will actually eat fruits that are close to being ripe bit isn't fully ripe.
And what they eat changes during seasonal.
Also I know you said you give your birds seeds which is fine, but if you can try to give them more spouted seeds in there diet which will be better for them, since birds will actually eat a lot of fresh, wet, Sprouted seeds in the wild. And also sprouted seeds takes a lot of the fat out of the seeds which makes it easier for them and there liver to digest and will help avoid fatty liver disease in them.
You see why people say seeds are bad for birds, or you may even hear them say seeds are McDonald's for birds is mainly because seeds that are bought in stores, or are sold by any company are not fresh seeds and contains way too much fat in them.
If you're gonna buy pellets just make sure the ingredients are good and make sure to stay away from any ingredients that contains sugar, corn, soy, artificial colours and flavors, vegetable oils, and too much vitamins and supplements. And try to find pellets that has mainly vegetables, or some fruits in them, and try to get the ones that are mainly made without GMO foods.
Also, don't give them too much of those eggs since a lot of those dried eggs made contains sugar, corn, soy etc in them and also contains more fat. Not all brands contains those ingredients for there dried eggs but a lot do. NVM I got mixed up with another comment saying they give there birds dried eggs. LoL.
But overall it does look like you're doing an amazing jobs, the more vegetables the better for them and healthier they'll be. Good job on taking care of them. 😊
I'm sorry if this is long, I just hope this helps. And you and your birds are healthy and happy. :)😊

My budgies eats both seeds and pellets but, I give them pellets a lot less than seeds ‘cause they usually choose seeds when I put it with the pellets with the seed. While my other budgie will only eat 3 pieces of the pellets and mess it up after. I also have a hard time feeding them fruits and vegetables cause they always ignore it sometimes, they will try to bite on it and when their beak touched the fruit or vegetable they start shaking their heads and ignored it.

Sadly your birds will sooner or later develope fatty liver disease if they get seeds in majority. I thought my birds were safe as they get fresh food everyday but the seeds made them develope fatty liver anyway and one of the birds lost her feathers on her stomach bc of the liver disease and a-vit deficensy. Now I have to medicate them everyday (and they have to learn how to eat pellets). So its in your and the birds best interest to minimize the seeds intake..

@@RE-xv9fpmaybe instead of just the regular seeds, try sprouting the seeds. It'll help a lot in terms of removing the fat in the seeds.
Also, if you can try adding the sprouting seeds with chop. It should help.
And I'm guessing you're giving your bird a liver supplement?

If you have a food processor you can try chopping/shredding your veggies down and mixing them half veg/half seed and slowly reduce the amount of seed in your veggie mix. They'll go for the seeds but get veggies stuck to their beak and start to get a taste for the veggies on their own

    • @ArielEarthyorder
      @ArielEarthyorder 2 роки тому

A brown nare simply means the female is at the breeding stage right now, spending time in the nest box and feeding each other, as well as obviously mating are good indications that she is most likely "Pregnant" (Although that's not the right terminology). Birds lay eggs, not give birth. So sometimes eggs will be fertile, and sometimes they wont. Another thing too, is the age of the budgie is a good indicator. If the female is older than 4 years old, then she cannot have fertile eggs. I'd prepare yourself for some baby budgies, but be sure to be very wary, as she can become egg-bound. Make sure to have lots of cettlebone for her inside the cage, so she can get the calcium to make the eggs (Otherwise she will have brittle bones since all of her calcium goes towards making eggs before making her own bones strong.)

All the points you made against seeds is based on the presumption that you give them nothing else beside seeds. You can give them calcium, vitamins and minerals separately and fruits and vegetables as well.
You say that seeds can be low quality, but how do you know if the ingredients in the pellets are high quality? With seeds at least I can tell which ones are mixed in, with pellets you can't.
Also it's true the seeds are high in fat, but I give them max 10g per bird per day, coupled with a lot of activity ensures they burn that fat.
It makes no sense that highly processed pellets are heltier than seeds + various fruits, vegetables and added minerals.

A lot of the foods including pellets I would say 90% of them aren't healthy. There's still not enough research done on exotic birds in terms of what in they actually eat in the wild.
And just recently there was a veterinarian that found out that birds in the wild will mainly eat fruits that are close to being ripe rather than eating fruits that are actually ripe.
I've found cheaper pellets that are more healthier that doesn't contain GMO, corn, soy, sugar, oils etc like all the bad ingredients in there pellets. It just depends on where you buy them from.

One of mine used to be like that. But as I got more that were used to eating fruits and veggies the oldest one I have finally got off seeds to pellets. He still eats seeds but only the right amount. I grind up my pellets to sprinkle in the seeds mainly because my youngest two are picky eaters. They love the fruits and veggies. It really helped letting the stubborn ones to get used to eating those two things by watching the ones that love the stuff including the pellets. I also use the it ain't poison method to get them to try a new fruit or veggie and let them see me eat it in front of them. It helps them and they are curious to try it once they see me eat it. It's so funny watching their reactions and I have ten budgies and two cockatiels. I love changing up their fruits and veggies. They like how I like to change it up. 😄
